Chapter Six
The Enigma Named Nëmi
The echo of a single fired gun shot rings through the air, causing the nearby seagulls to scurry in an erratic display. Sarah falls flat on her butt, left moon eyed at the unbelievable event that unfolded before her very eyes. Directly in front of her was a stone, a flat, matt grey stone floating in the middle of the air. The stone shielding Sarah from the single shot that was fired from the rifle of the large burly Slavic man, Andrei.
Andrei was also in a state of complete disbelief. His legs trembled and his eyes were filled with pure dread. The man stumbles back, as he quickly raises his rifle once again, aiming it directly towards Nëmi.
“She’s The Devil! She’s a Devil Girl!” Andrei’s voice was completely shaken, cracking in fear as he spoke. Before anyone could react, the stone that laid suspended in the air then suddenly jets towards the man and hits him square in the jaw.
The rapid blur knocks the man unconscious as he falls flat on his back onto the soft sands that lined the beach. The stone then does a quick flyby around the beach before making its way towards the mysterious little girl that stood confidently and with a grin on her face. Sarah is barely able to keep up with the object as it stops directly above the little girl and softly falls on the crown of Nëmi’s head. The stone, perched at an odd angle, looking as if it missed its landing and was ready to slide off at any moment. Despite its appearance, the stone stayed firmly planted on the little one’s head.
“What in the fuck!?” Sarah couldn't believe what she was witnessing, frozen in disbelief all the while Nëmi stood confidently proud in her actions. Nëmi’s eyes glittered with an otherworldly hue of blues and purples, a surreal mystical glow that seemed to dance within the irises of the little ones eyes. Nëmi looked at Sarah with a huge grin on her face, as she held her hand out with a thumbs up.
“Okay kid, what the fuck is that?” Sarah said, standing up in a panic, pointing directly at Nëmi.
“What the fuck is what?’ Nëmi responded.
“That thing, that rock on your head, that’s not normal.”
“Oh this!? This is my crown! From what I understand, people with great importance wear crowns to show off their prowess! Being a Goddess myself, I only saw it fit to have one too.” Nëmi said, her face lighting up with the biggest grin. She felt a surge of joy at the idea of Sarah showing an interest in her and was thrilled about the possibility of finally having a real friend. Sarah however simply scoffed, unable to believe the words coming from Nëmi’s mouth.
“Goddess? pft, yeah sure kid, and I'm the Queen of England.”
“Really!?” Nëmi leaped off the ground and began to float in thin air. Nëmi laid prone in the middle of the air, Her sparkling eyes were fixed on Sarah with pure awe, and as if carried by a gentle breeze, she drifted her way towards the elegant woman in blue. Sarah found herself speechless as Nëmi effortlessly drifted her way over.
“Wow!” Nëmi went on. “I know you’re pretty but I would have never guessed you were a queen. You really are something special aren't you Miss Sarah.” Sarah immediately facepalms herself, completely disappointed in her own choice of words. Of course this little girl wouldn’t have picked up on Sarah’s sarcasm.
“No kid, that’s not what I meant.” Sarah retorted.
“So you’re not a queen? You know, now thinking about it, of course you’re not. Otherwise you’d have a crown like me.” the little one responded whilst pointing at the stone-like object sitting on the top of her head.
“Oh my lord…” Sarah says under her breath. “No kid, that's not what I meant. I am no queen, and you’re not a God. That is what I meant.”
“Really? The whole glowing eyes and falling from the sky didn’t do it for you huh?”
“No, it didn’t. I would have been more inclined to believe you if you had told me that you were some sort of alien or science experiment gone rogue. I wouldn't exactly call uncontrollably falling from the sky a divine feat. Speaking of, what's the deal with that, what the hell were you doing up there in the first place? Where the hell did you even come from anyway.”
Without missing a beat, Nëmi stares dead into Sarah’s eyes whilst pointing upward towards the sky.
“From up there.”
Sarah immediately facepalms herself again. Although this little magic girl claims to be a deity, she clearly didn’t have the mind of one.
“Yeah, I figured that much already.” Sarah takes a deep breath and takes a moment to reword her question. “What I meant is how did you end up… ‘up there’ in the first place? Where you just chucked off a plane or something? Or are you from a different planet entirely?
Nëmi’s eyes then light up, as she gets all giddy, her eyes sparkle, as they show off their majestical cosmic hues. She balls up her fists and clenches up in pure excitement.
“I come from the Void! I am the amalgamation of every possible version of me into one me! That's me, Nëmi! So technically you could say I’m actually from here, just not this here, but different versions of here, but they're all inside of me now.” Nëmi says, looking down at herself whilst hovering her hands over her stomach.
“Ye - yeah…” Sarah said with a look of concern on her face. Clearly this little magic girl was completely off her rocker, but the otherworldly feats Nëmi displayed were nothing to make light of. Sarah was a woman of science, never a believer in the supernatural, much less gods and or goddesses. However, the orderly events that had taken place made it difficult for Sarah to dismiss it all as mere delusion. Sarah couldn't deny what she is and has been witnessing with her bare eyes, and thus tried to be as logical as possible. Despite the situation she was in, Sarah’s logical mind needed answers, and was unable to dismiss this little enigma as unexplainable.
As Sarah pondered her next words, Nëmi continued her tranquil approach. Nëmi was completely enamoured by the jewels Sarah possessed for eyes and consequently was now face to face with Sarah, their noses practically touching as The little one remained suspended in thin air. Nëmi’s eyes returned to their normal silver glow, as she stared intensely into Sarah’s soul. The deep sapphire blues that perfectly represented the world Nëmi had always longed to live in drew her in with a hypnotising appeal. However, unknowingly to Nëmi, her own eyes have a sublime beauty of nature’s raw chaotic power. A haunting melody that stirs the soul of any who dare stare deeply into the eyes of a Goddess.

Nëmi’s eyes were nothing short of breathtaking, a hypnotising sight of life and death embedded into the little one’s eyes. The uneasy feeling Sarah had felt earlier around this little girl had returned, although this time, Sarah didn’t dismiss it as an illogical fear. This little girl, floating in thin air, was anything but normal. Her eyes encapsulate that perfectly.
Nëmi’s eyes radiated a life giving light that made it feel like Sarah was staring directly into the heart of the universe itself. The hypnotising sight that shined with a calming aura and drew you into the pitch black pupils of the self proclaimed goddess.
…Darkness…
It was as if Sarah was staring into pure nothingness, a true infinite void.
Sarah’s heart begins to race as she begins to feel a complete sense of pure despair overwhelm her body. It was as if the entire weight of the world was suddenly thrusted on the top of her shoulders. Although Sarah stood completely motionless, to her, she felt as if she was surrounded by pure nothingness. An unexplainable sensation that Sarah could not wrap her head around. It wasn’t dark, it wasn’t bright, it was nothing that expanded far past anything she could ever hope to comprehend.
Sarah’s mind raced, trying to make sense of the incomprehensible nothingness that seemed to envelop her. She feels a crushing weight on her chest, as if the void itself was pressing down on her, suffocating her with its emptiness. Panic welled up within her, threatening to consume her rational thoughts.
Just as despair threatened to overwhelm her, the apparent void Sarah found herself in suddenly erupted in a cosmic wonder. It was as if Sarah was witnessing the creation of reality in front of her very eyes. The chaotic yet tranquil display that only made Sarah’s logical mind question everything she had thought she knew.
What felt like hours to Sarah, passing in an instant as she woke up from her trance. Sarah is greeted by the sight of Nëmi with a worrisome look in her eyes. Those very eyes displaying the same cosmic hues that had erupted in Sarah’s nightmare and woke her from her trance.
“A devil girl…” Sarah mummerd with a grin on her face. Although Nëmi made her question whether or not all of this was actually real or not, Sarah couldn’t help but be intrigued by the sight she had just witnessed.
Nëmi was a cosmic wonder that defied every logical aspect Sarah could think of. Sarah had always been intrigued by the chaotic nature of the universe, and had always fantasised what other secrets the universe had in store.
“HEY! That’s not nice! If anything you should consider me as your guardian angel, you know since I am the one that saved your behind.” Nëmi said, pouting.
“Sorry I didn’t mean it, I just…” Sarah became tongue tied as her mind was doing its best to rationalise all the chaos she had been witnessing. Sarah poked Nëmi, as the little enigma effortlessly drifted back from the gentle nudge Sarah gave her. “Fascinating…” Sarah went on. “You really aren't human, are you.” Sarah said with a smile on her face, beginning to be intrigued by Nëmi.
“Well duh! I already told you I’m-”
“A Goddess, Yeah I heard what you said. But sorry kiddo, no matter what other laws of physics you decide to break, I’m never going to believe that.”
“Why not? Your world has been visited by tons of deities in the past. They even have stories about ancient gods and how they used to rule the skies and seas! In fact the cool old bearded guy that smites people is still really popular. Would it really be that hard to believe that another beautiful goddess like myself would grace you with her presence?”
“I don’t believe in fairytales. The Gods and Goddesses of mythos, it’s all just make believe. “
Nëmi flinches back in confusion. She looks around and down at herself with a questionable look before looking back at Sarah with a retort. “But I’m right here.”
“So you are…” Sarah said as she looked at Nëmi, making sure to avoid looking directly into her eyes. “Either way you’re clearly just a kid with weird magical powers.”
“I wouldn't exactly call it magic. I can adjust how my body reacts to the rules of your world.” Nëmi retorted as she slowly drifted her way back towards Sarah.
“Point being, you’re just a kid, ‘divine’ powers or not.” Sarah pokes Nëmi again, this time however, the little girl doesn't budge.
“You know, you really are stubborn Miss Sarah.” Nëmi said as she flipped her little body over, landing on her feet back onto the sands below. “But I guess that’s to your benefit.” Nëmi went on. “I was honestly worried that people would go coo coo once they found out about my incredible prowess! But I guess the thicker your head, the thicker your resolve! Either that or you’re already insane.”
Sarah chuckles at Nëmi's words. “I guess you could say it’s a little bit of both.” Sarah takes her phone out once again, checking the time. “Now the question is, what do I do with you? I still have a job to do.”
Nëmi’s eyes light up as she gets giddy at the idea of having an adventure. She begins to hop up and down, unable to hold her excitement. “Oh Oh! I can help you with your mission! It’ll be our first adventure!”
“Hold it there Kiddo, don't get too ahead of yourself. I appreciate what you’ve done for me, but you're not coming with me,”
“What? Why not? With me around we’ll get this done no problemo! It’ll be fun!”
“That’s the problem. You're seeing this as a fun adventure when it simply isn’t the case for me, you’re anything but level headed. What if more men like these are in the forest? What then?”
“So you’re saying we have to take down more of these criminal scum in the forest.” Nëmi said with a sinister smile and a giggle whilst tapping the tips of her fingers together.
“What? No. I’m not even sure there are more of these buffoons out there. I was just putting that out there as a possibility,”
“You know I’ve never been in a forest before… or anywhere really.” Nëmi said, completely ignoring Sarah. “Oh I can’t wait!”
“Are you even listening? I don’t know if anyone else is in there.”
“So you’re saying we have to find them before they escape! You said in the forest, right? Over there!?” Nëmi Said as she turns to face the thick green foliage that lined the beach. “Come on Miss Sarah! We can’t let them get away!” Nëmi blurted out as she took off at inhumane speeds towards the dense underbrush, paying no heed to Sarah’s words.
“Hold it, I said no!” Sarah yells out, but it was far too late. Nëmi was already well beyond Sarah’s reach and was almost completely out of sight by the time Sarah had even finished her sentence.
“God… dammit…” Sarah says as she hurries to catch up to Nëmi back into the wilderness where everything first started.
