The metallic floor beneath their feet trembled as Kaelan, Lira, and Elara prepared for the fight of their lives. The shadows in front of them, once mere figments of dark energy, now solidified into grotesque mechanical creatures, their bodies a disturbing blend of machinery and corrupted energy. They stood in the doorway like sentinels, blocking their only escape route.
Lira drew a sharp breath, her eyes narrowing as she assessed their enemies. "These aren't just shadows anymore. They're hybrid constructs, some kind of fusion between mechanical engineering and dark mana."
"Then we fight them as both," Kaelan muttered under his breath, tightening his grip on his dagger. His body was still sore from the earlier battle with the corrupted core, but there was no time to rest. He was determined to see this through.
The largest of the shadow creatures took a step forward, its limbs clicking as they shifted and reformed, its body pulsing with dark energy. Its eyes if they could even be called eyes glowed with a malicious light. It raised one of its many arms, and the others followed suit, slowly advancing.
"Elara, get ready to move!" Kaelan shouted, his voice steady despite the overwhelming odds.
Elara nodded, her fingers flying over the controls of her device as she quickly scanned the information she had downloaded. "I’ve got the layout of the ship’s remaining systems," she said, her voice calm under pressure. "But we’ll need a distraction to get past these things."
"Leave that to us," Lira said, her voice like steel. She stepped forward, her feet shifting into an aggressive stance, and without hesitation, she charged.
Kaelan followed close behind, his dagger gleaming in the dim light. He knew Lira’s speed and skill would give them an edge, but they’d need to work together to take down the machines.
Lira closed the distance between them and the first of the creatures with incredible speed. She lashed out with a swift, precise strike, her blade cutting through the dark energy surrounding the creature. The impact was like striking steel, but the creature’s form seemed to absorb the blow, twisting and reforming. Lira cursed under her breath, quickly retreating to reassess.
The largest creature let out a screech, a high-pitched noise that rattled the walls. It moved with unnerving speed, its metallic limbs extending as it lunged toward Lira. Kaelan didn’t waste a second. He darted forward, using his agility to slip behind the creature and strike at its exposed back.
The creature staggered but did not fall. Its dark energy flared up, and it retaliated with a massive swipe, sending Kaelan sprawling to the floor. He quickly rolled, avoiding the second strike, but the impact left him winded.
"Focus!" Lira shouted. "We need to hit their core."
Kaelan nodded, struggling to his feet. The dark figures didn’t seem to feel pain they didn’t seem to care about their form at all. They were relentless, fueled by pure malevolence.
As Kaelan steadied himself, Elara’s voice echoed through the comms. "The control center is just ahead. We need to get there now!"
The creatures, sensing the urgency, redoubled their efforts. They attacked in perfect unison, forcing Kaelan and Lira to split their attention.
Kaelan’s mind raced as he dodged and struck, trying to find an opening. His dagger barely scratched the dark form of the largest creature, and he realized with a growing sense of dread that the only way to defeat these things was to target their energy core, buried deep within their bodies.
"Watch for the energy pulse!" Lira shouted, blocking one of the creatures' strikes with a swift parry. "They’ll expose it when they attack. That’s when we go in!"
Kaelan nodded, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the creature’s movements. The energy around the creatures seemed to fluctuate in a rhythmic pattern, pulsing with each strike they made. It was subtle, but Kaelan could see it now the way the creatures’ forms shifted and reformed in response to their attacks. They weren’t indestructible; they had a weak point.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
He jumped back, narrowly dodging another of the creature’s swipes, and waited for the perfect moment.
Lira’s voice was low and fierce as she locked eyes with Kaelan. "Now!"
The two of them moved in sync, their movements a blur as they struck at the creature’s core. Kaelan’s dagger pierced the energy-saturated metal at the creature’s chest, while Lira’s blade found a crack in its form, cutting deep into the source of the dark power.
The creature screeched in agony, and for the first time, its form began to break apart, the dark energy surging and flickering as its body destabilized.
But just as they thought it was over, a surge of raw energy shot out from the creature, knocking both of them off their feet. Kaelan landed hard on the ground, his head spinning, and he looked up just in time to see the other creatures closing in.
"We can’t keep doing this," he grunted, trying to get to his feet. His body was screaming for rest, but they couldn’t afford to stop.
Lira, too, was struggling, but she pushed through the exhaustion. "We don’t have a choice. Elara’s waiting for us."
Before Kaelan could respond, a booming sound filled the room, and the creatures froze. The hum of the ship’s systems shifted, now emanating a low, deep vibration. The air crackled with energy, and Elara’s voice came through the comms, sharp and commanding.
"I’ve activated the ship’s defensive systems. You need to move now!" she ordered.
A wave of light and energy surged from the ship's core, pushing back the shadowy figures. The creatures screeched in defiance as they tried to resist, but they were no match for the ship’s newfound power.
"Go!" Elara shouted.
With no time to waste, Kaelan and Lira bolted toward the bridge. The creatures, now weakened and destabilized, no longer pursued. Their dark energy flickered and dissipated as they crumbled to the ground.
Kaelan and Lira burst into the bridge, where Elara was already at the control panel, her fingers moving rapidly over the buttons.
"We’re almost there," Elara said, her face illuminated by the glowing screens before her. "But we need to disable the security lockouts before we can access the ship’s core systems."
Kaelan took a deep breath, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "Do what you need to do, but make it fast."
The ship’s tremors had only intensified, and the ticking clock of their survival was rapidly running out. They had one last chance to unlock the ship’s power and if they failed, the S.S. Novarion would become their tomb.
