Chapter 12: Waking Up

Chapter 12: Waking Up

CHAPTER 12: WAKING UP

The city walls had been a huge bulwark, an incredible protector of the inhabitants and credit to its builders. Once upon a time. The gate had since crumbled into a rubble heap and it had been breached - forcefully, given the signature craters of magic explosions - in many locations, making entry to the city being mostly trivial, his ankles the only part at risk.

Once inside, the layout seemed oddly familiar, as if he had seen it before. The streets were mostly cobbled, but damaged by time, the buildings showed more signs of damage - giant claw-marks, crushed walls, craters - giving the impression of a city fallen to a monster invasion. Only stone and metal scraps remained, everything else had decayed. No skeletons or other remains of men or monsters.

Arcanis cautiously followed the largest street he had found leading in the right direction. The luminous mushrooms grew in many places throughout the ruins, shedding uncertain light, enough to navigate by, but little enough for all the rubble and uneven streets to be a real navigation hazard.

You have raised the skill: Balance to level 6

+2 Agility, Improved stability and sense of balance

The improved stats really help making this merely annoying rather than lethal...

With a grumble the young man stood up again after his latest stumble, listened to hear whether anything had noticed the racket, but - when after a few seconds still only silence answered - moved on with continued caution. The street opened up into a large plaza, that was strangely untouched - the surrounding buildings were ruins, but the plaza itself was as smoothly even as if the cobbles had been set on this very day. In the center was a statue that triggered ... something in Arcanis.

Curious, he got closer and circled the statue, inspecting it - the statue depicting a woman in travel clothing with a grin on her face, eyes open, looking boldly forward. It was more than twice than life-sized going by the proportions and his memory stirred as he saw the sentence in the pedestal the status was placed upon.

The letters did not make any sense, but still ... he was somehow able to read them. "egredere, peregrinare et participes tui fabulae"

----------------------------------------

His blonde companion looked at him, outrage exuding from every part of her as strongly as the terror from the aura of an elder dragon. Against the raucous backdrop of the tavern they were in, it made for a most absurd contrast.

"Don't you dare abandon your duties, Tirion!" she stamped down her foot in righteous anger "What's the point of having a grand adventure if you're unwilling to share your tale!?"

----------------------------------------

"Huh." go forth, travel and share your tale. The memory fragment filling in the meaning of the quote. Fara really was good for us. Spending a moment reminiscing, more warm memories of his old companion returned and he felt himself relax a slight bit. We never let her forget about the irony of her name, though.

With a chuckle over the memories of the endless teasing his old friend had had to suffer through, he turned his attention back to the statue, kneeled in front of it and touched the socket of the pony-tailed statue and closed his eyes in old reverence. There was none of the deep, thrumming feeling of power, of presence, that should have been there.

"I know not what happened to you, my Lady, the will of the world unknowable, but whatever your fate turned out to be, I hope it was well by you - a new adventure, a new journey. If you still have it in you, please grant this plain one your blessing, for the adventure I am on is likely beyond me and not so of my own choosing."

For one split second, a sense of power returned, the air seemed transformed into a storm ... without any actual movement and an electric tingling stabbed into his fingers from the statue, travelling up his arm until the sound of a system notification broke the moment.

Blessing of Zara

"egredere, peregrinare et participes tui fabulae"

Blessing

You have been blessed by Zara, Goddess of Adventure.

Note: Gods of an Age gone by cannot grant boons.

"'Age gone by', huh?" 'Age' ... wonder what exactly that means. Need to look into history, if- when I manage to get out of here.

With apparently nothing more to be gained, Arcanis moved on towards the lighted section of the city.

* * *

The sound of steps was his first warning. As silent as he was able to, Arcanis moved to the side of the street, hiding behind a half-broken wall of a ruined shop. Not a moment too late as well, as he barely made it into his hiding space before light shone down the street - it moved around in sync with the steps he could hear and came ever closer.

He did not have to wait long until the source of light and sound appeared ... Goblins, why did it have to be Goblins? ... a lone Goblin warrior moved down the street, lantern in one hand, the other resting on the pommel of a short sword in the scabbard.

The creature looked somewhat fitter than the ones the aspiring wizard had met in the forest, and the gear actually seemed well maintained. On the other hand, any sentinel in my band going so inattentively about his guard business would have swiftly deepened his relationship with mortality. It was not checking any corners, did not care about any ambush locations or hiding spots - just having a bloody walk in the dark.

Charging out of his hiding spot, Arcanis reached the Goblin before it could react and struck the surprised creature with his staff, aiming for and hitting the head. Its skull caved in with a crunching sound and the Goblin crumbled lifelessly to the ground, the clatter of the lantern hitting the cobbles the only sound.

You have raised the skill: Ambush to level 2

+1 Agility, +1 Dexterity, +10% Damage to unsuspecting targets that are not engaged in combat

Returning to cover he waited for a minute or two whether anybody else had heard the noise and was coming to investigate ... but nobody did. Finally confident nobody was coming, he searched the creature for anything useful, but it had only had the low quality shortsword, leather armor that was quite too small, even for the young man, basic linen clothing and a loin cloth. No money, no mementos, no fetish, nothing.

Taking the shortsword and its sheath, Arcanis stored both in his inventory and finding the two using only one item slot. While he still pondered what to do with the body, both it and the lantern dissolved into lack, smelly smoke. One problem solved. Good to know they are pure dungeon creatures.

Continuing his trek towards the stairs, the young man encountered several more solo patrols, dispatching each from ambush, earning him another upgrade to the skill. In a way it was a fascinating opportunity to investigate the system and how skills operated: Since each Goblin seemed to be a copy of the other - including their lack of attention to their job - and only a single skill improved, it was quite ... interesting. Neither the speed nor the strength of his strike varied much - the increase to agility and dexterity low enough to impact little - but he felt a minimal adjustment to his swing that was not caused by intent, which grew stronger as the skill increased. Automatically targeting a more vulnerable spot on the skull? Makes one wonder how that will work on something without targetable vulnerabilities, such as slimes ...

* * *

Coming closer to the target area, patrols started to have more members and Arcanis hid from them, avoiding to draw attention he might be unable to handle. Finally, he reached the destination of his trek through the city: The grand plaza in front of the stairs. A square, three hundred meters on a side, it had once upon a time been perfectly smooth, paved in cobbles. Time had not been kind however, fungi had taken root and what had once been a flat surface would now be an organized attack on unwary ankles. Not much of a change from the rest of this dungeon.

Then there was the reason this was easy to observe without even entering the plaza: Campfires ... lots of campfires. There were hundreds of Goblins, milling about, chatting, sparring, maintaining gear - there was even a basic smithy - cooking, eating, sleeping, defecating ... Goblins everywhere. And not a single useful hiding spot to help make it to the stairs.

The camp bordered straight to the wall the stairs were set in and the closest approach included fifty meters of encampment and even before that a hundred more without cover, shined on by the fires. I wonder where they get the fuel from? Some tents were raised and to one side, set apart from the camp itself, half a dozen empty wooden cages. Some trained animals I have not seen yet?

Anyway, the only option to beat this would be attrition - grinding down their numbers, defeating them in detail without challenging the entire body, until there were few enough remaining to either take down or sneak past. The slow approach however would have him run out of food in short order, but one can last quite a while without food ... without water, not so much. Right, better retreat and see, whether one of the communal wells works in the dungeon.

Gaining some distance while avoiding the patrols along the route, Arcanis found himself in a residential area with a short plaza with a well in the center. Wheel, rope and bucket were all there and - after looking around to ensure he was alone - dropping the bucket into the well returned a splashing sound, giving hope of water. Turning the wheel, he retrieved the filled bucket, his improved strength making the action ... not quite effortless, but a lot easier than expected. Motivated by how easy it was, his enthusiasm got the better of him and Arcanis failed to react in time as the wheel got slightly caught ... and squealed loudly as he powered through the block.

The damage done and the bucket filled with water already in range, he quickly grabbed it and stored it into his inventory, then wheeled around and retrieved his staff as the sounds of steps from several feet running came closer.

One of the Goblin patrols charged into the plaza, weapons drawn. Not giving them time, the young man charged the three Goblins in return, using his range advantage to smash in the head of the one in the middle before they truly realized they were under attack. The creature dropped, though Arcanis could not tell whether dead or unconscious - either would do. Having spent his momentum, he went low, dodging beneath a high strike before executing a smoothly timed Sweeping Strike, toppling both of his opponents.

Capitalizing on the advantage, he used his staff like a spear, stabbing into the face of one of his prone assailants with the blunt power of his implement, powered by the strength he gained under Thomas' and Maria's tutelage.

The results were not pretty.

The last surviving Goblin, terrified by what had happened to his comrades, quickly rolled away to get out of range and yells at the top of his lung. Now, Goblins were not exactly blessed by a strong constitution or large lung volume ... still, the squeal was loud enough to carry and Arcanis was late in ending the creature.

More feet storming in his direction and - before he was able to reach a hiding spot - a new patrol entered the plaza. This time it was the young man's turn to be charged, two Goblins trying to take him down with their blades descending in time with their charge reaching him. Prepared, Arcanis stepped aside, taking up the power of their swing with his staff, redirecting and picking up their momentum, whirling around his own axis and smashing the staff into the neck of one of his assailants. A loud, brutal crunch sounded, its echoes reflected off the buildings' walls and one of the Goblins dropped like a puppet with its strings cut.

An arrow hit Arcanis in his left shoulder and the sound of a system notification played, but he ignored it, busy parrying and redirecting a lunge from his remaining melee attacker, unable to use his defensive move against such. Repositioning himself, he jumped back to both dodge another lunge and gain some distance, then used his staff to break the arm of his attacker before it was able to withdraw the attacking hand, forcing it to drop the shortsword.

The next arrow, Arcanis was able to dodge and he finished the second sword-wielding Goblin with a smash against the head as more and more steps sounded, drawing closer and closer. I need to escape before they swamp me!

But before he was able to act on this thought a second arrow struck, this time in his waist - another system ping and the pain was getting worse. Still, nothing I can't bear. More Goblins arrived - this time two patrols for six new Goblins, reinforcing the lone survivor - and he was unable to escape before the next group charged him. A Sweeping Strike toppled the leading three, but the ones behind those managed to jump over their fallen comrades and two more arrows forced him to dodge, unable to capitalize on the opening.

Need to reduce their numbers fast!

Dodging the the left, around the fallen Goblins, Arcanis used his staff to keep the standing melee fighters at range, then charged the two archers, who obviously had thought him occupied and panicked, one dropping its bow and running, the other scrambling to get another arrow ready.

It ran out of time and Arcanis managed to drop it with a powerful smash against the noggin'. The other one did not fare better, not even noticing the smashing strike coming from behind. By that time alas, the melee fighters had caught up and pain ran up his right leg, as one of their shortswords found purchase. It was still a scratch but those would add up.

Completing his turn back, he managed just in time to catch the energy of the next overhead strike from another creature in his Redirect maneuver, whirled and passed the energy with interest to the next attacker, ending it in one blow.

Four remaining

Another arrow passed him, striking one of the bodies and more steps came closer from behind. Dancing around his current assailants, Arcanis managed to prevent them from grappling him and kept them at some distance, striking the hand of one of them, forcing it to drop its weapon. The repositioning had his back close to a wall, limiting the directions the creatures could get at him from, but also restricting his motion, which he realized was a pretty bad idea when trying his next sweep and it getting in the move's way.

The position untenable, he rushed forward, holding his staff horizontally in front of him, pushing three surprised fighters away, one falling down in the process. This gave him enough time to reposition again, catching one of his new assailants just as it finished its charge, Redirecting its blow right back at it, smashing its neck.

Five melee, one ranged remaining

Another arrow forced him to dodge, but Arcanis used that motion to get extra momentum for a wide sweeping Strike that managed to topple three of his melee attackers. This time he managed to use their disadvantage and finished off two of his prone opponents with two swift stabs to the throat before they were able to recover. The others managed to engage before the young man was able to end the third one, distracting him long enough for another arrow to graze him in his arm.

Three melee, one ranged remaining

Another patrol rushed onto the plaza from another street, three more assailants rushing him from an unexpected direction. Falling back to the well, he managed to take and Redirect the fastest of them with perfect timing, whirling and passing the momentum straight back to it from behind, completing its movement and having it tumble straight over the well's low wall. He was, alas, too busy to appreciate its wails as it dropped down the shaft.

Five melee, one ranged remaining

Another Goblin managed to nick him, despite his swift movements and Arcanis could feel the strain accumulating. Another Sweeping strike, more stabbing, another arrow hit, Redirecting a blow, another Goblin down the shaft. That well is true and well poisoned by now! More Sweeping, more reinforcements, another arrow dodged, more Goblins down, kicking one away, reposition and Redirect.

Nine melee, three ranged remaining

Using his staff to vault over the melee Goblins, he landed among the surprised archers and swiftly ended all three, but got two strikes to his back in return. He whirled around, dodging another arrow and saw more reinforcements arriving.

Eleven melee, one ranged remaining

Forced to retreat more under their numbers, Arcanis felt his energies flagging and in a desperate bid tried his "Healing Tou-" but was charged by five Goblins before he finished, one striking the arm of the glowing hand. Losing control over his spell at the distraction, a large explosion picked him up and threw him against the wall of a building, an arrow and all five closest Goblins were scorched and thrown around as well.

Six melee, one ranged remaining

Picking himself up, the remaining seven Goblins looked at him scared. A good thing too, since he hurt all over and needed the time to recover. Making the best of his time, cornered as he was, Arcanis was able to finish two "Healing Touch" casts before more reinforcements arrived, this time two entire patrols, emboldening the survivors.

Ten melee, three ranged remaining

Again dodging lunges, a Sweeping Strike, followed by two more stabbings, paid for in stabs taken. A sidewards smash moved a Goblin just in time to intercept one of the arrows, as Arcanis dodged below another high sweep, bodychecking his attackers, the lower weight catapulting it away.

Seven melee, three ranged remaining

A horn blew in the distance. Need to get away! The distraction cost him another nick to his side, as he dodged attack after attack. Reapplying his trick of using the staff to help vault out of range, he used it this time to jump high up a building's wall and grab onto the second floor window, to keep out of melee range.

His reprieve was cut short as two arrows hit him in the arm, forcing him to let go and drop back into the melee. Storing his staff he pushed off the wall into a jumping lunge, rolling between two Goblins, bowling both over as he jumped back up into a running position. Charging into the now open street, he finally managed to leave the Goblins behind himself. Alas, arrows are faster than Goblins and he was not quite as successful at outrunning them, taking two more hits, two more system sounds and Arcanis felt his energy flagging, his steps slowing against his will.

Finally, he made it around the corner, breaking the line of sight to the archers, sighing in relieve. Which was cut short when he found himself facing a solid wall of Goblins running in his direction.

It must have been half the camp he had seen, if not more.

Way too many remaining

Turning around means facing the archers. These at least need to get into my range to face me! Arcanis retrieved his staff and stood ready to face the horde.

Stolen novel; please report.

It arrived.

Aria looked down at the crumbled figure on ground. Its energy spent, its body bruised all over ... and still it shone brilliantly to her eyes. A deep firmament, and the lucky star already risen, shining on his existence. Even if not all of its sparks are benevolent.

She shone her light on his face, inspecting what had been done to it. This wont do at all. Adding the attributes of healing and restoration, she watched her aura take hold and the eyes slowly reform.

Taking the opportunity, she focused on the young man's mana core and gasped. How can it be so pure? The energies pulsed cleanly, no affinities tainting its perfectly spherical shape. Patterns repeated over its surface and pulses rippled like waves, in a sync with his heartbeat.

She felt the pull, strongly, wanting to take a plunge into this core of untainted arcane. Alas, these mortals insist on wrapping it into a fragile, fleshy prison.

With the face restored, Aria returned her aura back to normal, too many commitments on her mana to attempt to fully restore him. The spectacle of his core still fascinated her and she kept watching it for a long time. The way it pulsed and rippled, the way it connected to his body and the way its energy filtered into the body's matrix.

To think he is about to awaken his core, right here in a Dungeon. Too bad humans appear to have no idea how to cultivate them!

* * *

Arcanis woke up with a groan. His body hurt all over, only his head feeling fine for some reason. Must be because they couldn't reach that high as easily.

Looking around, he found himself lying in one of the cages at the outer edge of the camp. There were none guarding his prison, the Goblins in the camp partying hard, it seemed. Lots of drums, dancing, roughhousing, fighting, brawling ... it was hard to tell the difference.

The distraction only lasted so far and his body regained his attention, each part individually complaining about its state. They must have worked me all over ... Making the state of his head all the more confusing. Still ... looking for a distraction, Arcanis checked out his backlog of notifications.

Not counting the gains through improved skills, that would have been ... four HP remaining! Sighing in relieve at his narrow survival, Arcanis' many wounds make their complaints clear. Trying to get up, he accidentally used his double-broken right arm, triggering an incredible stabbing pain, causing him to scream and curl up and wait for it to pass. Habit truly is faster than thought.

After waiting out the waves of agony, he used his left hand to repeatedly cast "Healing Touch" on himself, hiding the hand and the spells shining light beneath his body. With the rest of his wounds closed up again, most of the constant background pain faded and he used his good arm to stand up again. The injured arm hung uselessly at his side, causing significant pain, but he was able to bite down another scream.

He was still busy appreciating the benefits his Pain Tolerance skill gave him when motion in his peripheral vision drew his eyes. The Fae had returned, passing between the bars of his cage and stopped a few centimeters in front of his face. Her light aura was minimized - which is how he had failed to spot her earlier - and she gesticulated wildly at him, her mouth moving ... but no sound came.

"What are you trying to tell me, small one?" Arcanis looked at her curiously, especially as that impression of a breeze blowing now came from the Fae, even though the air remained still. A very faint smoke appeared in front of her and he curiously waved a finger through it, meeting no resistance. Giving up in frustration, the small one crossed her arms and looked at him, obviously considering how to continue.

After a few seconds ticked by, a determined look showed in her eyes, she uncrossed her arms and again punched the young man in the nose. This time the perceived breeze turned into a wind and the smoked moved into his nose.

Warm Feeling, knowing you are not alone in your toils (probably)

The pain in his right arm suddenly transformed into a light discomfort, though it had become no more usable than it was before. Tears almost formed at the sudden relieve from the pain.

"Thank you, oh thank you!" He could not be quite certain, but she seemed to almost blush at his thanks. With that, she swiftly moved to the outside of his cage, a different odd sensation he was unable to narrow down came from outside and suddenly a quite real smell of burning reached him.

Before he was able to react, the Fae once again flow away for a meter, then waved at him, obviously meaning for him to leave his prison. Pushing against the door, there was little resistance and then a small ripping noise accompanied an opening gate - the bar holding it closed falling to the floor, whatever had held it to the door no longer intact.

She waved at him to hurry up and pointed at another cage, where Arcanis found his staff leaning against it. Not wanting to waste her help, he ran towards it, picked it up and stored it as the Fae rushed towards the nearest buildings, waving for him to follow. He did with alacrity, even more so with the screams that started sounding behind him. Soon arrows followed, but Goblins apparently were not the best of marksmen and he remained intact.

Following the Fae, his recent increases to agility really showed as the young man outpaced the pursuers by a significant margin. Still, they had the numbers to swarm and surround him in the confines of the city, so he hoped the Fae knew where she led him. Turning around the next corner as guided, he realized the ground becoming more uneven as he continued - cobbles completely broken out of the street, some rock breaking through, more mushrooms, though few of them luminous.

If that had been before I was stranded here, running over this terrain would have killed me.

The Fae led and he followed for a few minutes more as the terrain grew more and more difficult until they turned around another corner and ... Arcanis barely managed to stop in time, a few centimeters in front of the large hole the Fae had led him to. Out of breath, now that he had stopped, he looked around and barely noticed what the small one was doing. Far too late for him to do anything about it anyway, as she had flown a loop and rammed him into the his back with more of that breezy feeling ... this time with enough actual air moving to push him the last few centimeters. He stepped forward to do a last moment counterbalance attempt, but his foot only met air as he fell forward and again darkness took him - a bit more literally then previously at first, until head met rock.

* * *

Whew, keeping that whelp alive sure is hard work! Aria looked at the young human with a warm look. I hope he does not come to resent me, after this, but there was just too little time.

She stared with fascination as his Core started to wake up, unfolding from its cocoon.

Probably better if I leave him alone for the rest of his delve, making it out of this with his own power without further intervention would probably help him out more, going forward. Reluctantly she looked at the brilliance of his core, totally not regretting that decision already. Not at all.

Oh well, he will return. They always do.

* * *

He woke up with a headache. Again. Feeling around without opening his eyes, he felt as if mostly submerged in water. Warm water. Comfortable. Who would want to get out of this?

Relaxing into whatever he was lying in, Arcanis thought about his situation, pondering ... and a sense of frustration came over him. Pushed again and again by factors out of his control, this lack of agency was immensely irritating. Life after life it came down to the old issues of power and control. Of how without enough power, too many outside factors were able to push him around ... and once you had enough power for this to be less of a problem, more powerful factions got involved until one was back to the level of power politics and the endless cycle continued.

No agency was no option - really, that was one of the core reason he avoided simple professions such as baker, as that would be fully a life at the mercy of others.

The Fae was another confusing factor. On the one hand helping, on the other pranking. Getting him out of the cage ... then leading him down, deeper into the dungeon when he wanted out.

Well, will need to have good long talk with her. Once I figure out how to do the talking thing, anyway.

Finally opening his eyes, Arcanis found his breath stolen in awe. He was lying in a lake of pristine water, crystals glowing in all colors of the rainbow submerged but clearly visible. The cavern roof above the lake was also covered in crystals, some reflecting the light, some glowing in colors of their own. A fog was flowing in the breeze, but not only were all the lights lighting it up in their color, it came with a soothing green color of its own.

Completely entranced by his surroundings - in fact the visual overload was starting to cause a distinct headache - he barely noticed the system sound.
