Chapter 1

They say coffee is a drug. I never truly understood that until tonight. There is something about the feeling you get after having your seventh cup of coffee in one night. It must have something to do with the way coffee is made. Something about the energy it gives you changes after the seventh cup. It may still be keeping you awake but you are pretty much dead inside. The cost for energy.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

These were the things I thought about as I procrastinated on my end-of-term project.

At the time majoring in electronics engineering sounded like a great idea. Taking my love for making things and the need for money and making them into something that works for me. I moved away from my home country to America. I settled in Atlanta, Georgia. Where I now attend Georgia Tech. I left my home in Nigeria to escape my obligations to my family. While I still love them, they could be a royal pain. Now I am knee-deep in trouble because I decided to leave the finishing touches to my latest invention for later.

The ExVest. An AI-controlled suit that can store mind-blowing amounts of power and information. This would be my debut creation. If I managed to get it working in time.

I had just finished my third test when the Messages first popped up.

**I hope humanity is ready to give it their best shot. I’ve heard good things about your species so maybe you will all survive till the end.**

I stared at the message.

And kept staring at the message.

I read the message ten times. I tried to look around the dorm room for secret cameras but the box followed my eyes, staying in the middle of my vision. I was beginning to think it would stay there forever until it changed.

**In 24-hours your world will begin to change. At the end of that time, you’ll be faced with choices. Choices that will define how the rest of your life will play out. Be prepared.

This time the message was gone as soon as I finished reading it. For a moment I sat there staring at a point in my wall. Then I got up and threw away every box of coffee in my dorms. I am never drinking coffee again.
