In layman's terns, each Arcana covers two different, unique elements. They are generally interpreted as one single element, just expressing itself in different forms. For example, "Fire" and "Ice" are the same element, just manifested differently. Light and Darkness, too, is only one element...
During Shion's battle with the DemonLord, a curse was placed on him, stripping him of all magic and leaving him with permanent memory loss... His Arcanas were personified into sentient beings that can now think for themselves.
