Lucian leaned against the side of the carriage, gazing at the deep emerald landscape that stretched endlessly before them. The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden hues on the lush green grass, dappling the forest floor with pockets of light. The gentle swaying of the carriage seemed to rock him back and forth, soothing his excitement as they made their way to Ravenhold, the city of Mages and Knights.
Marian sat across from him, her expression a mix of anticipation and apprehension. She caught Lucian staring at her and smiled, leaning forward to engage him in conversation.
"You seem awfully quiet, little brother," she said teasingly. "Are you nervous about my entrance exam?"
Lucian grinned, shaking his head. "I'm not nervous. I’m just taking in the scenery. It’s not every day I get a chance to lay back and relax. Also, why would I be worried about an exam you are taking.”
“Ah... yeah. Never mind.” Replied Marian, still twiddling her thumbs, her body restless.
As if on cue, a group of magical beasts appeared in the distance, grazing beside the road. They looked like deer, but their antlers were adorned with shimmering, delicate crystals that caught the sunlight in a mesmerising display of colours. Their eyes were a brilliant, otherworldly shade of blue that seemed to hold a thousand secrets.
Lucian's eyes widened in amazement. "Look, Marian! Aren't they beautiful?" Marian leaned over, admiring the creatures.
"They're Prismalopes. I've only read about them in books." Said Lucian, recalling the contents of the numerous books he had read up until now.
Marian's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Can you imagine the stories we'll have to share when we return home? They'll never believe we saw deer that shine like crystals up close."
“It's said that their blood has magical properties that are used to make high-quality potions. I wonder how much they’ll fetch for.”
“… Can you stop thinking about killing them? They look so beautiful and cute.”
“Hmph. Sure, I guess.” Sulked Lucian. “At least all your tension about the exams is gone.”
Marian leaned back in her seat, her eyes still on the magical creatures. "You know, I just can't help but feel like this is a sign, you know? A good omen for our future."
"Really now? If you say so."
As the carriage rolled on the rugged road, the siblings continued to chat, discussing which shops they should visit first. Over the course of the eight-day journey, the landscape gradually transitioned from the lush emerald countryside to the outskirts of a bustling city. Soon, the once-distant silhouette of Ravenhold grew nearer, its majestic towers and grand architecture coming into view. The city walls, crafted from polished stone and etched with intricate runes, seemed to shimmer with an ethereal glow. Beyond the walls, the city of Ravenhold stretched out, showcasing its impressive architectural mastery. Cobblestone streets meandered through the city, lined with timber-framed houses and bustling marketplaces. At the heart of the city stood the extravagant estate, its elegant facades and lush gardens exuding an air of authority and influence.
Scattered throughout the city were various structures reflecting the presence of magic, such as intricately carved fountains with water gently dancing in mid-air and street lamps glowing with a soft, enchanting light. The city's defences also boasted subtle magical enhancements, with reinforced gates and walls imbued with protective enchantments. Despite these magical elements, Ravenhold retained the charm and character of a traditional medieval city, where the everyday lives of its citizens remained grounded in reality.

The carriage came to a halt at the city gates, and Lucian and Marian stepped out, their eyes wide with awe as they took in the sprawling metropolis before them. As they made their way through the cobblestone streets, they could hear the murmur of townsfolk engaged in conversation. The siblings couldn't help but eavesdrop on a group reminiscing about the products from Elvarond.
"I really miss those Elvarondian pastries," a young woman sighed, her eyes distant with longing. "They had this flaky crust and a filling that tasted so good. I wonder why they stopped sending them."
An older man chimed in, "And their fabrics, my girl! Softest and most vibrant cloth you ever laid eyes on. Such a shame we can't get our hands on 'em anymore. I would’ve bought some more if I had known.”
Weary from their long journey, Marian and Lucian overheard snippets of gossip while they meandered through the city, their eyes scanning the surroundings for a place to rest. As they ventured into the outer district, where narrow streets and modest homes signalled the residence of the common folk, they finally spotted a welcoming inn to settle down for the night. The inn had little difference from the one they had in their town. The two-story, timber-framed building had a weathered sign hanging above the entrance, displaying the inn's name, "The Weary Traveler," accompanied by a painting of a resting horse.
Upon entering, they were greeted by the delightful aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering stew. The common room was filled with a pleasant hum of conversation and laughter as patrons, a mix of locals and fellow travellers, gathered around tables to share stories and enjoy a hearty meal. A crackling fire in the stone hearth provided warmth and comfort, casting flickering shadows on the wooden beams and worn, yet clean, furniture.
Behind a polished wooden counter, a friendly innkeeper welcomed Marian and Lucian with a smile, offering them a choice of modest yet comfortable rooms for the night. The siblings could tell that, despite its unassuming appearance, this inn would provide them with the rest and respite they so desperately needed after their long journey.
A few hours later, after they had settled in, Lucian and Marian would discuss their plans.
“As expected, the vibe of a city is totally different from a town. Everything looks so pretty and huge. Hey Lucian, where should we go tomorrow? I want to go somewhere fun.”
“…When is your evaluation starting tomorrow?”
“At midday? … Ahah, I guess I should first focus on what I came for first, right?”
“Right. And don’t worry. We’ll have fun after the evaluation’s done. If you pass, consider it a treat. If you fail, well, consider it a consolation.”
“What a mean little brat I have for a brother. Can’t you just say I’ll pass for sure? You’re making me anxious for no reason.”
“My bad.” Replied Lucian with a chuckle.
The next morning, Marian and Lucian woke up early to make the most of their day. They had a hearty breakfast in the inn's common room, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filling the air.
After finishing their meal, the siblings set out to explore the city. They walked down bustling streets lined with colourful market stalls, where vendors hawked their wares, from fresh produce to intricate handicrafts. Lucian couldn't help but marvel at the magical trinkets on display while Marian found herself drawn to the fine craftsmanship of the local blacksmiths.
As midday approached, the siblings made their way to the Knight's Order, where Marian's evaluation would take place. A sense of anticipation and nervousness filled the air as other aspiring knights milled around, waiting for their turn to prove their worth.
Marian took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. Lucian gave her an encouraging pat on the back, offering a supportive smile. "You've got this, Marian. Just remember everything you've practised, and you'll do great."
Marian flashed a smile with hints of gratefulness and nervousness at her brother before stepping into the arena, ready to face the challenges that awaited her. As she focused on the task at hand, Lucian found himself a spot in the stands, anxiously watching his sister walking through the gates of the Order. Lucian would take a good look at the location since it was a place the likes he had never seen before. The Knight's Order was situated in an imposing, fortified compound near the heart of the city. Surrounded by high stone walls, the compound featured a grand entrance adorned with the emblem of the Order – a majestic lion with a sword clutched in its jaws. The entrance was flanked by two guards in gleaming armour, standing tall and proud, giving a sense of authority and protection. As Lucian took in the impressive surroundings, he couldn't help but feel awe at the sight of the location.
I wonder what the Academy would look like… Well, since it’s going to take some time for Marian to finish her written evaluation, I guess I can take a look.
Lucian left the Knight's Order and made his way towards the Academy of Mages, eager to get a glimpse of the place where he would continue his magical education. As he approached, he could see that the Academy stood out from its surroundings, its design a harmonious blend of ancient and modern styles. The exterior walls of the Academy were made of a smooth, gleaming white stone that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. Intricate engravings and runes adorned the surface, each rune emanating strong magic from within. Several tall, slender towers rose majestically from the main building, their tapered spires reaching for the sky. A large gate stood at the entrance, guarded by two statues of what seemed to be mages from the robes that were sculpted alongside the figure. Each statue held a staff that radiated a subtle aura of magic.
The sight of the Academy reignited the forgotten feelings of wonder and excitement, the likes of which were greater than the first time he started to learn magic.
Almost one more year, huh… Can’t wait to get here.
