I was trying not to fall asleep in AP Math class when our teacher got a phone call. Not unusual, probably the principle calling about some student he needed to talk to. It wasn't a very big class, but I wasn't friends with everyone there. There was Bryce, my best friend and one of the football teams biggest linemen. Dan, a bit of a nerd who helped tutor me on the weekends and played some Overwatch with Bryce and me whenever our schedules lined up. Trey was the captain of the football team and kind of a dickhead. Rebecca, Trey's girlfriend, was the queen bee of the school, and a stuck-up bitch to boot. Vic was the stereotypical "goth girl," and rarely spoke to anyone other than the other goth kids. Like I said, not a big class at all, as most kids in this backwater town couldn't do math to save their lives.
"So, I know you're all ready to be out of this class to get on with your summer vacation, but unfortunately you will all have to stay here for the time being. There's been quite a few emergencies around town, and the police want everyone to stay in place." Ms. Dagen said, looking like she was trying to keep down her lunch.
"Is this because people have been going crazy lately?" Bryce asked, clearly not wanting to have to stay in school on the last day.
"They're not crazy, they're sick you dumb fuck." Rebecca snapped at him. They broke up a couple months ago, so there was a lot of hatred between the two, but Rebecca's mom worked at the hospital and had apparently been working 24/7 lately.
"Sick or not, the police said everyone needs to stay indoors and keep the doors locked so we're treating this like a drill, okay?" Ms. Dagen said as she walked over to the door and pulled the blinds over the window and locked the door.
Dan leaned over to me and whispered, "I heard that some guy started freaking out at the hospital after he came in with this nasty bite and started puking everywhere."
"That's nasty dude, you think someone in school is sick? One of the cheerleaders started puking this morning too during gym." I asked him, looking around at each of the people in class.
"I don't care man, y'all can't keep us here!" Trey shouted as he stood up and started walking towards the door.
Ms. Dagen just sighed and stood in front of the door. "Trey you can't leave, and if you try to, you'll get detention and be held back a year, as this would make your" Ms. Dagen paused, probably counting in her head how many times Trey had nearly gotten kicked out, "7th time this year. So no, you will not be leaving this room."
Trey looked like he was about to say something but opted to just grumble to himself and go back to his seat. Vic pulled out her headphones and tuned us all out, and as I looked past her out the window, a car careened into the parking lot and crashed into one of the teacher's cars that was parked there. Everyone stood up and crammed around the window trying to get a peek as Ms. Dagen tried to keep us all from looking.
"Holy shit dude, I think that guy is still alive!" Bryce hollered. He wasn't wrong, even though the guy had to be in a ton of pain. He had gone through the windshield of his car, and there was blood everywhere. But then, he started to move around as some people from the parking lot started to approach and see if he needed help.
"Oh my god, I'm literally gonna puke, he's all cut up and stuff." Rebecca said as she dashed across the room and grabbed the trash can, the sounds of heaving coming from that corner of the room. Then, down at the car accident, there was a loud scream as the dude who just sent himself through his windshield grabbed the nearest person and started clawing and biting.
"Oh my god!" Ms. Dagen screamed as the crowd outside panicked and started running away, not that I blamed them. Ms. Dagen bolted for the phone and dialed 911 as the rest of us started freaking out. The rest of us had mixed reactions, Vic finally started to take note as the rest of us started all shouting and asking questions that no one had the answer to.
"Why is he eating that chick?" "What are we gonna do?" "What if he comes in here?" "What if he tries to eat one of us?"
"EVERYONE SHUT UP!" Ms. Dagen yelled, slamming the phone on the desk. "We need to stay calm, and stay away from the windows, the police are on the way." Moments after, a loud BOOM shook the building, and a huge fireball a few streets away made it's way into the sky a few streets away. Outside, the man seemed to drop the lady he had been feasting on and start dragging himself further out of the car as the lady began seizing on the ground.

Bryce and Dan looked at me with horror as Vic put herself in the farthest corner of the room, away from the windows and Trey went over to Rebecca to console her.
"What are we gonna do man?" Dan asked, looking between Bryce and me. "It's like that show, The Unliving Walkers, where everyone started dying and coming back." Bryce said.
"No way man, that show is just a bunch of actors pretending to be zombies, this is real!" Dan said, looking like he was about to piss himself. "Either way, we're in here and he's out there." I said to both of them, trying to remember how that stupid show went. "On top of that, there's way more of us than there are of him, so I like our odds."
The lady had stopped seizing outside, and the man sprinted towards where the other people had run off to after he started using whoever that was as a 5-star buffet. Then she stood up, looking around like she was confused, as blood gushed from the wounds on her neck and shoulders. Rebecca let out an ear-piercing scream as she stood up from her puking session and took a look out the window. The lady outside snapped her head towards the sound, and I could've sworn she was staring right at me. She let out a blood curdling scream and began running towards the window.
"OH FUCK" Trey yelled as the lady came closer and closer to the window, everyone trying to get as far away as they could. She slammed into the window, cracking the glass as she scraped at clawed, like the was trying to get at whoever happened to be closest. 'Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck' I thought to myself as everyone tried to squeeze as far away as they could from the window. Bryce shook me out of my trance as he grabbed me by the shoulders and shouted, "Hey dumbass it's time for us to leave!" Ms. Dagen had long since abandoned trying to keep us calm, and instead was trying to herd everyone out into the hallway. Vic, Dan, Bryce, Rebecca, Trey and I all ran out and looked left and right before hearing a scream come from near the main lobby, and more students began pouring into the halls. Ms. Dagen slammed the door shut and made sure each of us was ok before saying "C'mon, we're going to the second floor and we're gonna wait for the police to arrive, they'll handle this."
"Are you crazy?" Trey asked as Rebecca shook like a leaf, clutched to his arm. "The cops aren't gonna know what to do either, we gotta get outta here!" "And do what? Wait for one of those things to try to turn us into it's next meal?" Bryce said, trying to knock some sense into Trey. We heard the glass shatter from inside the room, and that made the decision for all of us. Bryce, Dan, Vic and I all bolted towards the stairwell as Ms. Dagan tried to reason with Trey and Rebecca, who seemed determined to stay. As I looked back, a bloody hand shot out from the window and scratched Trey on his shoulder as he recoiled away. Rebecca screamed and took off down the hall in the other direction, and Ms. Dagan stumbled backwards as Trey grabbed at his neck, trying to stop the bleeding. Then Ms. Dagan got him to his feet and helped him towards us as we all piled up the stairs. Dan chose a door a bit further down the second-floor hallway, which was our Home Economics classroom. Bryce and I started piling desks and chairs in front of the door as Ms. Dagan sat Trey down and Vic and Dan began looking for anything they could use to stop the bleeding. Once Bryce and I had piled the desks high against the door, we went over to see if there was anything we could do. Trey had broken out into an intense sweat, and the towels we had found were barely keeping the blood in. "Shouldn't we call for an ambulance or a doctor?" Bryce asked. "That's not possible right now, emergency services are probably piled up." Dan said as he wet a towel with cold water and laid it on Trey's forehead. "What we should do is try to get ready in case one of those things tries to get in here."
Vic spoke up for the first time in a while. "The nerd is right. If we are dealing with zombies or whatever we need to be able to defend ourselves, we can probably find some knives or something in here." "First things first, there should be a first aid kit in here somewhere, check the cabinets by the sink first." Ms. Dagan said as she began trying to dab away some of the blood. Trey looked pale as a ghost, and the sweating had gotten worse. We spread out and started to check every cabinet and drawer, but to no avail. The best we could do was fine some more towels and some tape that would have to do for now. "Maybe the nurse's office has something, but that's all the way back downstairs where that thing is. There was a knock at the door, followed by someone asking "Is anyone in there? Please, we need help!" All of us froze, eyes wandering from each other back to the door. Another loud banging, followed by a loud shout. "Hey! Don't come any closer man! I mean it!" Another loud thud and a scream of pain, and Bryce quickly grabbed one of the kitchen knives from a holder near the oven. "C'mon, we gotta help them!" he said as he began moving the chairs and desks we had stacked up just a half hour ago. The screams continued as I grabbed a knife too and began helping Bryce with the desks. "Wait!" Dan shouted as he tried to stop us, "We have no idea how many of those things are out there! There could be 10 of them for all we know!" "What are we supposed to do? Leave whoever's out there for dead meat?" I asked. "Wait!" Vic interrupted us, "Just, listen." The screams had stopped, and the only sound coming from outside the door was a wet squelching noise, and the sound of chewing. We all backed away from the door slowly as crimson blood flowed underneath the door and into the room. Bryce and I shared a horrified look with each other as the reality set in that nothing would ever be the same. "Guys....Trey is dead." Ms. Dagen said as we all turned and looked at his slumped body in the chair.
