Episode 003: Planes Overhead

I was stood on a road junction five miles to the east of Heathrow airport and it was just turned six AM. Emergency road vehicles and both police and military helicopters had passed by me. They were heading towards the airport. An official statement from a government spokesman said a quarantined plane arrived from New York was contaminated. And now in the last few seconds I had heard a loud explosion from that very same direction. It was a mild sunny start to the morning, but my blood run cold.

Around me I could see people looking out of their windows roused by the noise. A few emerged from their homes and stood on the street aimlessly much as I was, and looked west. Wherever, and whatever, had occurred was far enough away that we could see neither flames nor smoke. My phone vibrated and I looked down at the screen. It was a text from my brother. It read - news says Heathrow is quarantined. Zombies!!! Oh my god!!!

OMG indeed.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

I looked across at one of the people who had just emerged from one of the houses. She had a ghostly white pallor to her skin, and she stood there shaking with tears running down her face. I addressed her.

“We are pretty close to the airport. Until we know what’s happening it would make sense to pack a bag in case we need to evacuate.”

Her eyes briefly flickered over to me without acknowledgement before she turned to looking back west. Another man stood by her stared at me. When I looked at him he quickly turned around and ran back to his home.

Overhead we heard more military aircraft coming in fast. A few seconds later there were more explosions. Were we now bombing Heathrow airport too?

I paused momentarily and then turned to run back to my apartment. More people were beginning to emerge on the street and so I ran in the road.

While I ran i called my brother. On the second ring he answered. I spoke while in motion.

"They are bombing Heathrow. Shit is about to go down."

Above me more planes flew past. These sounded like bombers with their deeper louder engines. I was almost at my apartment when their salvo struck Heathrow.
