The ant that was walking across the sands was snapped up in an instant, the mandibles more then half the length of the creatures body hidden under the sand snapping the head cleanly off the and, the body moving for a moment more, then going completely still, only then did it's attacker unbury itself from the sand.
As is uncovered itself, it herd the chime, a soft ping that echoed inside it's mind. It did not know when it started, but one day, it seemed to become aware, a little smarter than the rest of it's group.
"Good noise. Know this." from an outside prospective, they would see it freeze, and completely ignore the prey that was ripe for the eating in front of it.

They knew that the top make them chomp harder. The second made them move faster, but they didn't need that. The third one they didn't know. The fourth one they didn't know. The fifth one they didn't know ether. The last one they didn't know ether. So, in it's wisdom, it chose to raise the ones it didn't know, so if it did something bad, it wouldn't do it again.

As it did, it felt something change. It felt the carapace that surround it get just a bit thicker, and the legs it stood on get just a bit firmer. It felt like the first, but instead of just its the things that made it move better, all of everything felt...Better. As it thought, it noticed that is was thinking...Better? Faster? It liked this feeling, it decided.
After standing there for over 15 minutes, it started to move again, the mandibles starting to crunch the and up into smaller bits for it to eat, and after it was finished eating, it moved over a good distance, and moved its way back deeper into the sand, and with its belly full, it slept.
