----------------------------------------
It was an unforgivable sight.
There was chaos everywhere. Ants releasing scent of fear, ants asking for help, ants dying, and dead ants made most of the numbers around. This area wasn’t the only war zone and neither had all the soldiers gotten stuck in the skirmish, but those who had fought and were alive to tell the tale had been baptized. Some had already fallen and many more would slowly take their last breaths, but this wasn’t the end. This was just a dark day in the history of the farm, which will pass and lead to a darker night.
There’ll be dark times, for sure, but even this night will eventually fade and the sun will rise again, ushering a new wave of radiance. Wars of this scale, though tragedies are also builders of great characters, for these are the times when new heroes emerge from the common folk. A new crop of brave soldiers will slowly take the place of those dead. The aged cowards will burn to the radiance of youth and disappear among the mass.
However, the destruction war brings isn’t to be forgotten. Wars are bringers of death, destroyer of hopes and dreams. The invasion had left me devastated, crushed and hopeless.
Billy was gone. The farm though left untouched was under the danger of being abandoned. If the strength of our foes had incremented from being able to do small skirmishes to a full-blown attack in under a week, then commander Glow was right, and wrong at the same time; this place wouldn’t be able to resist for another week, much less the month he had worried about. The only chance at keeping the farm alive was by going through with the expedition, no matter how hopeless it may seem now. I knew David would go for sure. We had a lot more on the line than anyone else involved.
I passed through the damaged paths and met with my team. They looked miserable.. David was tensed; more so than usual. Even Pyro didn’t joke. Genma looked upset. Only Mink smiled. They all looked battered and bruised, though not in any sort of medical emergency.
“What happened to you?” Genma questioned. I waved to him with my antennas and sat among them. Carriers were slowly arriving at the scene, giving their services to those tired and weak. Honeydew was openly passed around. It was an excellent energizer. A few sips of the stuff got a few soldiers back on their feet. One of the carriers also reached our group and offered the dew. Everyone had their share and so did I, but couldn’t didn’t it all. The image of Billy in the arms of the bugs kept emerging in front of my eyes, and so did many haunting thoughts.
“You look hurt,” David said with concern. “We shouldn’t have let you go fight alone.”
I disagreed.
“Oh, come on, he’s just missing a few legs,” Pyro said, and then froze. His antennas stood straight up in fright and he rushed at me, yelling, “He’s hurt. He’s missing legs and-and antennae, somebody help!”
“I’m alright,” I said, though not meaning it in the slightest sense. “Just a bit tired. Look. I’m not dying. The wounds, I’ll deal with them later. For now, I just need to rest. Then we’ll go after the bugs.” I mumbled and trailed off. “The bugs took them alive. I saw Billy. I’m sorry Vice-captain. Minnie—”
“Whatever you say brother — whatever you say.” I heard Genma’s voice stretching in my head.
The world looked doomed and bleak. The morning was still young and the wind cold. Things could have been different. I thought as the world slowly lost color to my eyes. My vision narrowed to a dot and sounds distorted into incoherent mumbling around me. The last I saw of my surroundings was a giant shadow approach and stand next to me, and then I lost consciousness.
Eventually, I woke up feeling refreshed. My body didn’t hurt, my mind didn’t wander, my limbs had regenerated, and I was safe. Either my body had regenerated automatically or auto defense had activated as my mana regenerated.
I was inside the tower and the air was filled with the scent of dying ants, wounded ants, ants that were in all kinds of perilous conditions, but not dead. I wasn’t alone there. I worried we might have been attacked again while I was sleeping, but such was not the case. The soldiers had created a camp in the compound under the tower where everyone wounded and dying had been shelved. It was a large enough place to easily house a thousand carriers, but currently, it was jam-packed with very little wiggle room. There was no healthy solder’s inside, indicating the farm management was not ignorant about infections and other ailments which spreads in these situations.
I thought I would lose sleep upon losing another friend, but I had slept soundly. This made me angry. I thought of going outside, to search for Billy. But I didn’t know where to start. I hadn’t even bonded with him. How would I find him? Then I remembered about the expedition and hoped it hadn’t left already. My companions had left me once and look where that had gotten us. I wasn’t going to let them take my revenge away from me. I was going; even if it meant going alone.
I ran outside the compound, which was even more crowded than inside. Some of the lesser wounded were gathered there, along with the soldiers who could still stand tall. Some of them had missing limb which had already healed, others looked untouched by war. And that didn’t surprise me. All of the unharmed soldiers belonged to the same colony, after all: The green farmer ants that managed the farm. They, however, weren’t smug, rather had their eyes cast with shame and heads down. That bastard Glow had broken the morale of his company all on his own. God forgive, had the bugs returned, the farm wouldn’t have remained to see the rising sun next day.
I opened my map to find David and the company. They were in the tower, possibly in the meeting room. My map could only show me a two-dimensional view, which wasn’t enough to look inside the buildings or look under the ground. On the map their images were superimposed on each other, indicating they were together. I rushed to their position. Guards tried to stop me, but I blasted through them. I wanted to help, but to do so, I couldn’t think. My mind felt too clouded. Finally, I reached the large chamber before the tunnel leading to the meeting room where —surprisingly—stood my companions and many others, excluding David and the other commanders.
Mink saw me and shook Pyro, who waved his antennas upon finding me amidst the crowd. I closed the distance and healed his missing leg. Mink had a crushed abdomen. I don’t know how he was still moving about with such an injury, but I did my best and healed him too. The golden light from heal got everyone’s attention and soon they were whispering about the phenomenon. None approached us though, which was expected. We were the most popular bunch among them, after all. The band of misfits, I heard them call us thanks to my sensitive hearing: The ones who hoped around the battlefield to help others; I agreed with the title. We were a band of misfits. Dark was the one who had done the most among us in terms of helping others, but he wasn’t among us. I didn’t have to ask where he might be. I knew the answer to that.
“What is happening? Where is David?” I asked Pyro.
Genma studied my eyes as usual while Pyro briefed me about the meeting. “They are doing it. Glow messed up big this time. His decision to not participate in the war has him cornered. You wait and see; he’ll be burned alive for his crimes.”
“And the one handling this occasion will be none other than our friend here.” I heard someone say from behind me. Pyro ground his mandibles and I knew whom the voice belonged to. It had to be Dark. Only he could be sarcastic without meaning it. Both Pyro and Dark had a rivalry going on. It was one-sided actually because only Pyro considered Dark his rival, while Dark thought nothing of him.
I greeted Dark and turned to face the sudden commotion which had erupted right then. The commanders were coming down the meeting room one by one. Soon, I saw Commander Yuvi walk out with David in tow. They both looked solemn. We joined them to the side of the chamber where David shook his head when we asked him about the meeting.
“It didn’t go as planned.” He said. “And they decided against our plea.”
“What?”
“Glow said the losses are just too great.” David supplied. “According to him, the farm lost almost six hundred carriers to the invasion; which is equal to a colony's cut. Not only that, because much of the reserves of honeydew was made available to everyone after the invasion, only half of the stock is left. That leaves us with but a bit more than half of our usual quantity of honeydew. But there is also good news.”
I remembered that. We had all had our share of dew. It had been fulfilling, that sweet sugary delight. However, the same fulfillment now felt like a weight, burying us and those waiting for us back home further into our graves.
“What about the expedition? Is it still happening?” I asked and commander Yuvi slowly nodded.
“But it has been changed to a rescue mission now. And glow has made it mandatory for all commanders to lead a team.” He then informed us solemnly.
“No supplies for the deserters.”
“That’s bad?”
“That’s the fucking good news,” Dark commented from David’s shadow.
I couldn’t believe it. “How is that good news?” I asked, and David told us.
“Because two of the four captains have backed down, and the rest, including us, will be getting their share of supplies, bringing us up to 80% of our usual takeout.”
“But that won’t be enough,” Genma whispered.
“I know,” David said. “More would have backed down had the elders not stood up and informed of a change in routine. Now the honeydew will be supplied every week instead of the previous once every two weeks. And the deserters will have none of it for the next three weeks.”
I saw bastard Glow watching us from the exit. He waved his antennas when our eyes met; I didn’t indulge him by responding, rather stared back until he turned and left. I thought of giving him a dose of fear with my Evil eyes but stopped myself in the nick of time. We already had too many problems. I didn’t want to add to them. We had been granted our wish, though whether the farmers would deliver or not was a discussion I didn’t want any part of. The news, however, brought some life back to my companion’s eyes but also made them worried. Agreeing to the mission meant going against the bugs. I couldn’t imagine how that would work out.
Apparently, Commander Yuvi and his army had an awe aspiring day. Not only had they killed twenty-three of the caterpillars, but had also taken down four bugs, which was also the most out of any envoy. Though he had also suffered great damages to his army in return as two hundred of his soldiers were out of action, as they had either died or were injured.
Yet, the mission was still on. My thoughts, however, were turbid. They urged me to rush off right that moment. There was a chance that everyone taken by the bugs was still alive.
I swore to calm my mind, then asked, “So when are we leaving?” gaining a few odd expressions from those still around.
“We’ll be leaving when the sun rises directly above our head. Why? Do you wish to leave right now?”
“I—” Yes, I do. That’s what I wanted to say, but a glance outside through one of the openings in the tower walls made me realize how big a mistake that would be. There were hundreds of wounded ants lying on the branched paths at the foot of the tower, multiple times the ants taken. Sure, lives of those taken by the bugs were possibly hanging from thin threads, but so were the lives of those down there.
Life, in the end, is a compilation of choices. Simply getting up in the morning is also a choice, and some do choose not to get up ever again. Most of the times the choices are of little significance, but sometimes, even the right thing to do is wrong it the grand scheme of things. Those are the choices that shape characters and create heroes or villains. And by choosing to save the wounded instead of urging the others to hurry, I had chosen to abandon those taken. I made that choice. And I live with the consequences.
I saw lime outside the tower. She was silently watching the farm, aimlessly digging at the branch under her. She looked desolate, tired. She must have had quite high leveled ant sense because she turned her head and our eyes meet. She might have appeared a hard soul in normal times, but at this moment she looked so weak, so hurt.
I was about to say, ‘I’ll bring him back.’ But I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t want to make another promise just to break it later. Instead, I told her to bring me some soldiers.
“For what?” she asked in a voice calmer than I had expected.
“I want you to gather those critically wounded and on the verge of death in one area. I’m going to save their lives.” I said and activated heal to relieve her of her pain. I didn’t regenerate her missing central legs; that would have taken too much mana. Her eyes glittered as her health regenerated and she no longer doubted me. I noticed her eyes clearing; her drooping antennas becoming livelier. She stood up flexing her mandibles, gave me a curt nod, and then left.
She soon returned with twenty soldiers, all moderately wounded. Their injuries puzzled me. All the soldiers she brought belonged to the farmer’s community and it wasn’t a secret that they had been strictly prohibited from participating in the war. Yet, they were. They were the heroes; the ones among the thousands of their community who didn’t have their heads down in shame. I healed them keeping my thoughts to myself, and ordered them to sort the dying and the critically injured from the others and group them. They looked at captain Lime for conformation, which she gave after considering the consequences, and they all rushed into the compound. The healed soldiers sifted through the wounded and singled about three hundred ants — soldier and carriers— from the rest.
I wasn’t expecting such a large number. The thing is, no ant has a health pool of larger than twenty. No matter how evolved and strong one is. Vitality isn’t one of our strengths. Yet, I knew it was going to be difficult to heal all three hundred of them with my mana. Still, I tried. I knew depending upon my mana would lead me nowhere. To heal them I would have to use the patient’s mana and for that, I decided to use mana extraction.
My skill mana extraction was at level 5, fixing the conversion rate at one part to every five parts of mana extracted. It was low, but also my only option. Thankfully, I had a large number of mana sources in the form of patients and soldiers; otherwise, this would have turned into a nightmare.
The plan was to extract mana from the patients, fill up my secondary mana bar, and activate group heal. Because group heal couldn't regenerate limbs though it could seal wounds, purify infections, and regenerate health, it was the perfect tool for the job. Everything went as planned and the ants recovered visibly. Those dying started breathing easily again and those screaming in agony calmed down. About half an hour later the group had been completely healed and everyone was up and about. No one screamed in joy at the life filling their bodies, nor did anyone thank me personally. They all, however, bowed their heads in respect. Watching the once dying ants mingling with their friends, I truly believed I had made the right choice.
Once done with the critically injured, I moved to the rest of the lot and they watched me with hopeful eyes. They had seen the miracle. They had seen me bring the dying back on their feet. They were excited, I could feel it, but none peeped as I walked amongst them. Some touched my feet with their antennas as I passed, others bowed in respect. The silence created an unusual atmosphere in the compound. I wasn’t sure where this would lead us, so I decided to focus on my work. Healing them took a lot less effort, but a lot longer. Continued usage of heal and mana extraction was straining. I had to ask for a carrier to deliver me honeydew after I noticed my stamina dropping like water from a leak. It was a very strenuous work, one I did with complete dignity and focus.
Three hours later, the compound was free of wounded soldiers. Although the marks of the invasion remained scarring their bodies, everyone found health again. I was thanked innumerably for my work. After which I parted ways from the mass and hid. I had outdone myself. My mind buzzed continuously from the strain, but I felt happy, relieved even. Cleaning myself free of grim, I went to a secluded place and just lied down. The compound had emptied. Only a few ants remained behind as everyone else stumbled back to the farm. The day was still young for the soldiers, wounded or not.
I slept for a few moments then woke up again; nervousness of the upcoming expedition eating me from the inside. It perplexed me that the system hadn’t rung once since yesterday. Its absence added to my headache. Usually, it doesn’t stay quiet for more than a few hours, but now it had been for almost two days. Before I could concern myself about the problem, I remembered having muted the notifications while rushing toward the farm yesterday. The fight was coming near. I needed to prepare and get a sight of where I stood in matters of strength. Enabling the notifications was the first thing I did. The system rang in my mind then, notifying me of a notification log, something I hadn’t seen before.

Surprisingly, it was an extensive list of all the notifications I had received but hadn’t read since yesterday. It was a lot to process in my state. When I was done looking at my gains, I decided to check out my new skills and the title. Finding the sun not quite above my head beyond the shading cover of leaves, I went along with my decision.
First up was a little skill called, battery.

[Save more than a hundred souls from damnation.]
[Reward: Double’s your charisma, and gets you respectable status amongst kind souls.]
[Reward: +5 level to skill: Heal.]
----------------------------------------
I guessed the skill battery was a result of my reckless combination of Overdrive and Acceleration. As for Sturdy, it was the same as Toughness, its predecessor, which made sense. Considering I wasn’t asked the paths of its evolution.
Fire manipulation and High Fire Resistance were expected, but Mana mechanics was a special little ability I had no idea about. I activated mana vision to see what the description meant but noticed no difference in the vision. The world had turned as colorful and lively as the first time I had seen upon trying the skill. Seeing myself getting nowhere with it, I deactivated mana vision and went forward with evolving head butt.
----------------------------------------
Head butt has risen to its maximum level and is giving you the option to learn: Thrust or Rebound
----------------------------------------
[Thrust][Active][Lv-1/25][Tier-2]
[Help you perform powered thrust with anything the skill is used in conjunction with; whether a weapon or your own body.]
[Effect: It adds the armor-piercing ability to your attacks but also doubles the energy consumptions. Energy consumption decreases by 4% every level.]
* * *
[Rebound][Passive][Lv-1/25][Tier-2]
[A perfectly timed head butt can rebound a physical or a magical attack.]
[Mistiming will deal twice the damage and induce confusion.]
[Rebounds become easier as skill progresses.]
[Rewards: grants +.2 dexterity/ skill level.]
----------------------------------------
Rebound, I was not in urgent need of, but thrust had appeared at the right time. The ladybugs armor had troubled me, had I not found an alternative way of dealing with them, I would have died. It was an easy decision. I chose Thrust for a very simple reason; I needed that armor-piercing ability to deal with the bugs.
Done with the skills, I tried to make a plan. I thought until the last moment and concluded that poison was very effective and I was being negligent about its use. What would have happened had I used the poisonous acid mist while in the middle of the cloud of bugs? The ants would have died for sure. But what if there were no captives? I concluded they would have perceived the danger and scattered or a gust of wind could have blown the poison in the wrong direction. I didn’t dare imagine the mist scattering over the farm. That would have destroyed everything with my own hands.
In the end, due to time constraints, as the sun was already right above my head, I decided to slot some skills. With memorize sitting at level 13, I could have had a large arsenal of attacks ready to face any situation. And that’s what I did. The first skill I slotted was falling star. Its activation took 100 points of mana! What was any better way to use the slot? Then I slotted five cannonballs and rushed outside. I didn’t have time. The soldiers were already gathering under the tower. I needed more mana, so I went directly toward them. Unfortunately, less than a thousand had gathered, so I could only fill my mana pool and somewhat of my second bar before the commanders started arriving. I thought between different options and dumped all the mana into heal and saved the golden light. Shade forbid, if such a situation arises where I require an urgent heal, this would become my second lifeline. I wished there was a way to save mana in the same manner, but there was none. I saw my companions approaching; they looked aggravated about something and rushed to join them under the tower.
It was time.
