Chapter 1 - Born as a failure

Chapter 1 - Born as a failure

My eyes suddenly shoot up as I regain consciousness. Without hesitation I spring up in a defensive stance, searching for the danger to come. As I glare at the proximity, nothing attacks me, I only see a few beings jumping backwards surprised by my actions. My skill activates and I feel them: Humans. I am in a filthy room full of weak, injured humans. I continue to explore the room for information, but nothing unexpected comes up.

Suddenly a young human girls starts to walk toward me. She seems healthy compared to the others, but still smelly and malnourished. She is of no direct danger to me, but I know very little. Seemingly afraid yet excited she starts speaking to me.

“Hello. I’m Lea. Are you an angel?”

I stare at her for a few seconds and answer with a nod, which incites a few gasps around in the room. As I want to ask a question to learn where am I, I recall the events that led me here.

*****

The moment I was born, I learned a lot of things. I knew about the worlds the creator governs and my role, the reason for my existence. I also know that several souls have been merged to create mine, thus many shards of memories remained inside that do not belong to me.

Although I have not met any other angels or the creator and was suddenly put into a world without rest, I knew everything I had to know for it was ‘made’ into me upon birth. My reason, my existence, is to stop worlds from dying. While I am young, supposedly I am a very rare, almost unique existence that happened to be made by miracle. I don’t know anything about the creator, but I know the bond of father and child exists between us which gives me warmth and comfort.

They may be watching even now, which fills me with endless devotion. But of course I am still a weak newborn.

I opened my wings and watched as the beautiful white feathers fold out 3 meters wide, and flew up to see my surroundings. As far as my eyes could see, giant concrete buildings took up my view. They looked very old, filled with the vegetation of nature, often crumbled under the iron tooth of time.

That was only the beginning, I found many beings, ten-thousands of smaller or bigger communities of humanoids. The most common one is human. I deduced the in the past some kind of apocalypse must have happened, which started wierd mutations. This was only the beginning though. Animals, no, monsters roamed occasionally the streets in packs, each having their own territory. This only got worse the further it got from the city center, with less humanoid presence stronger and larger number of monsters created nests. I can only imagine, outside the city must be wilderness deadly to the world’s inhabitants.

The monsters have one thing in common, corruption. Leaving the System and becoming an uncontrolled mindless monster, they have turned against the creator.

I was born to destroy them. Anger swelled upon my heart and I unconsciously started flying towards them. The disgust and anger I felt took over my mind and with bare hands, I started to destroy.

Four legged furry creatures, often using the weird dark power I so loathe, I separated their heads and bathed in their blood until my wings turned red. It was then, that a large winged creature pounced on me, lifting me above. With no weapon I could not escape from its grasp, I was trapped struggling to break free. My bones broke one by one, my white blood dripped on from my mouth.

Simply, it wasn’t a monster. An unrealistic huge bird it was with a wingspan of 15 meters, it was no monster. I have infinite power to draw from when fighting against the corruption, but I am but a weak newborn against normal beings.

I remember swearing in regret as I opened up my System menu and with great pain I gave the command.

sethealth.creature.nearest 1

You have set the health of the nearest creature to 1. It will die in bloodloss in 6 seconds.

You have spent 812 Access points. 188 points remaining.

I saw the creature start to bleed from any and all holes it had on its giant body, but I left it to no waste as it released me in pain. I gripped it’s legs that used to hold me and propelled myself upwards straight at its belly, using my hand to pierce it. My hands slid in without much resistance, the damage has been already done, so I ripped out it’s still beating heart. I stored it withing my System Inventory and let go if the body. I tried opening my wings to stop the fall we fell into, only to cry out in pain as my body barely held together. Without any hope I fell a few hundred meters and splashed into the hard bitumen behind a large building. Before I lost consciousness, a window popped out.

You have killed a dangerous wild beast that threatened the life of many other beings, greatly improving the chance of their survival against the corruption. You have been awarded with 20 Access points.

And here I am in a building full of humans. I feel like a very pathetic angel. I even wasted most of my starting Access points which are really hard to get. But if I die, I am taken to the creator! How shameful would that be if an angel on it's first day got eaten by a big bird that wasn't even a monster.

I remember my situation as the girl starts to speak again.

“I knew it! A real angel! Did you come to save us?”

I gently smiled at her, but I still have to be careful so that others may not manipulate me.

“Something like that, I guess.” I reply.

It seems only a few hours went by but my body is already fully healed. I’m glad angels are tough. I open the System menu again and scan the girl in front of me.

Hmm… Interesting. I somewhat knew this from the start already, but seeing it is very different from what I imagined. The creator made these windows to let lesser intelligent beings understand themselves and evolve. They can see themselves as numbers and compare.

They are simply unable to understand the law of creation without this. While I do have a much better understanding by the hand of the creator, I am merely able to use the command module by thought to use up access points.

Not the mention Alter itself. It has many names. Magic, mana, qi, chi, and many other. In the end, it is simply the capacity of the soul for altering the world. One has to learn to use it and they need their body to have the necessary Control to invoke the change. Without sufficient Control it is simply a dream to make great changes and they will need to compensate with willpower, time and more Alter.

Destroying my way of thought, the girl puts her hand together and kneels, followed by the rest of the injured who are able to stand up. Now that I remember, I was at this infirmary looking place, wasn’t I?
