Tobias made a decision other than the Kill quest; he would attempt to complete all the individual steps of the two trade skill quests before completing both, also the 5 skill points need to be allocated. Indeed that rapidly was becoming important. So Tobias checked the tree that he had cleared the previous visit, and while the damage to the ground and the tree had disappeared the fire pit and the remains of the fire were still present.
Finding useful items looks like it was important because at the moment Tobias was unable to see the glow of any items other 1 bunch of tinder which he believed he had missed when collecting from this location the other day. So he quickly looted the item and stored it away.
Increasing the minor gathering really need to the next step. So he focused on the minor gathering skill in the status and was rewarded with a new popup

Triggering the Yes option he was surprised by the appearance of a new pop up.

It was clear to Tobias that swap intelligence for Perception was clearly a bad idea, so that left using 3 points of trade skills or waiting but that seemed problematic as he needed the skill of gathering and item recognition both to improve and he had the strong feeling that neither were going to happen without make some level of swap.
Pressing the Yes for use 3 points saw the minor gathering improve and a new Characteristic appear, Perception. Selecting minor item recognition and select the apply option. Resulted in several green glows appeared around various bits of the surroundings. 2 different mushrooms, A stiff looking grass, and the charcoal that was left at the bottom of the fire pit.
Additionally, the closest shrub that he knew that he had previously killed rats at now had a faint red glow. Perception was clearly useful in of itself, the range of the minor predator recognition had increased, not by a large amount but enough that it was noticeable. But also, the rats were respawning. That was quite a relief he had feared that he was not going to be able to complete at least one of the quests. The other skill he felt that was required was the minor item recognition so he quickly improved that. And with the un-allocated skill points were gone.
Collecting the new items was a simple task and killing the respawned rats was well practiced at this point.
As he approached the red glow that indicated a rat nest. Moving quietly, he was able to approach the rats without causing them to attack, triggering the Flame Aura and gaining Initiative by surprising the group of rats, Combat was over in moments.

It was clear that the simple nests were no longer any challenge and it was obvious that the boss rat was not going to be found at a simple nest, and it was rather unlikely that the boss would be at the larger clumps of shrubs, looking around for something significant a tree that was surrounded by shrubs had a shimmering haze surrounding it.
