I’ve always admired the protagonist of stories. Someone who was chosen to save the world from evil. That was always my dream as a kid. I wanted to take up a sword and rush into battle with my best friends by my side. But that was years ago. This is now.

Heavy winds buffeted around me as I steadied myself in the shifting blue sand. My horns felt like they would get ripped off by the force of the winds.
All I could see was the same blue sand for miles in every direction. This didn’t look like any place I recognized. And that was saying something.
The only thing I seemed to have with me were my chakrams, a gift from… her. I took in a deep breath. This was no time to think about that. That was the past. There was nothing I could do about it now.
I tried to study the faint details of shapes in the distance when one of them started to move rapidly in my direction. Bursting out of the sand near my feet was the largest leviathan I’ve ever seen. And certainly, the first one I’ve seen on land.
As I rolled out of the way, I grabbed each of my chakrams in my hands. Their cold metal blades gave me a bit of comfort in this strange place.

Its dark green scales glimmered under the light of the two moons. Two large bioluminescent frills came out on either side of its dragon-like head that lit its face in an eerie green light.
A low rumbling noise came from the throat of the leviathan, a clear warning to get out of the way unless you wanted to be a conductor. Sparks of lightning crackled out from its maw.
In a well-practiced move, I surrounded each of the bladed discs with a blanket of magic. They each glowed bright purple, even brighter than I remembered.
I launched them both aiming at the serpent’s eyes. Using my right hand, I conducted their direction from where I was standing. The magic swerved them both in the direction I aimed my hand. Clenching my fist made their speed increase, and they both converged in an X, completely cutting the top of the leviathan’s head off.
I winced as its corpse flopped onto the ground and orange blood formed rivulets in the sand. When I tried this in the past, my power was never this strong. My hand reached up and grazed the spot below my left eye. A new permanent “birth” mark sat there reminding me of my failure.
I approached the fallen corpse to find my chakrams. I saw a glint of metal in the leaking organs spilling out over the sand. At closer inspection, it was not one of my chakrams but I still pulled it out of the orange brain matter. I shook any remaining bits of slime off of it and examined the object.
It looked to be a glass vial that had a metal ring along the bottom. A trace amount of purple liquid sloshed around and it seemed to have a similar viscosity to blood. But why would someone be giving a leviathan someone’s blood? And how did it get on land without dying?
