"No one knows who the new boss is. They're being super secretive about it. But don't worry, we'll see them in person tomorrow!" Mandy said, sounding intrigued. "I also heard that the new boss bought HH Law Firm just as a gift for his fiancée! He just gifts a whole law firm without a second thought! Being the fiancée of a big-shot CEO must be amazing!"
She chuckled, then added with a playful tone, "Mia, with your looks, you'll definitely snag a rich husband one day."
Mia pressed her lips together. Mandy was right. She had married a wealthy man but her husband didn't
love her.
"Oh, and Mia, we're all meeting up for dinner tonight at Red Lounge at six. I got so caught up in gossiping I almost forgot the main thing!"
Mia envied Mandy's cheerful optimism. Mandy had been at the firm for two years and always brought boundless energy to work. At 25, Mia was the same age but had already experienced enough heartache to feel worn down by life.
"Mia, are y you feeling down? Why aren't you saying anything?" Mandy continued chatting. "Everyone's guessing that the new boss will improve our benefits and perks! If our salaries double, that'd be amazing!"" She was daydreaming about a bright future. Mia couldn't help but smile slightly. "What if the new boss comes in and starts laying people off or cutting pay?"
With the economy down in recent years, plenty of companies were cutting jobs and reducing salaries. It was hard to hope for raises and benefits.
"Come on! He bought a whole firm for his fiancée, so he's obviously got the cash. He wouldn't be cutting costs, right?" Mandy sounded hopeful but uncertain.
"I was just throwing it out there. Maybe you're right, and he'll start off with a nice raise for everyone!" Mia replied, trying to sound positive.Nôvel(D)rama.Org's content.
With a new boss coming in, she could only hope for better benefits and maybe a promotion. After her divorce from Hunter, she would be handling her grandmother's hefty medical bills alone. Even with a divorce settlement, the money would eventually run dry if her monthly expenises kept adding up.
"Haha, maybe you're right! Guess we'll just have to wait and see!" Mandy cheerfully ended the call.
Mia put her phone away, feeling more composed. She took one last glance at the conference room door before turning to leave.
Inside the conference room, Hunter sat back in his chair, lighting a cigarette. Through the rising smoke, he could almost picture Mia's tear-filled eyes.
For three years, he had always taken control in bed, pushing her limits and leaving her with that same vulnerable, teary-eyed look.
At home, seeing her like that only made him want her more, driving him to take her even harder. The more she cried, the more intoxicating her voice became, a sound he found impossible to resist.
Just moments ago, he had nearly given in to the urge to have her right ther somehow, inexplicably, he had let her go.
At that moment, his phone rang. He stubbed out the cigarette and picked up.
in the conference room. Yet
"Where'd you take Mia?" Mr. Jasper Sr.'s voice boomed, carrying a hint of dissatisfaction. "And where's the team you arranged for the stock transfer? They're nowhere to be found!" If he
he knew that Hunter almost had an intimate encounter with Mia in the conference room, he would probably be furious to the point of passing out.
Hunter pressed his lips together. "Mia left. We'll handle the stock transfer later."
With Mabel back in the family, certain relatives would soon become restless. At least with the shares in his grandfather's hands, Mia would be safe.
"Give me the documents back. Tomorrow, I'll take Mia myself and get it done." Mr. Jasper Sr.'s tone was tinged with irritation. "You can't even handle a simple task!"
"For the sake of your health, I'd recommend keeping the shares for now."
"Are you talking about Mabel's return? Do you think I'm afraid of her?"
