CHAPTER 747
Amidst the shrieks in the air, many of the panicking women jumped onto their chairs.
“Quick, get it! It’s running over there!”
“Guys, man up and get rid of it!”
The men in the logistics department were pressured into catching the rat.
However, it wasn’t a surprise that those who were used to city life didn’t know how to catch a rat at all, especially one that was so agile.
As screams continued to ring out in the air, the rat ran in between some of the men’s legs.
Terrified by the sight, they turned toward Whitney and pleaded for help.
“Hurry up and catch it! Otherwise, the chaos in the logistics department would turn us into a laughing stock in the entire company!”
“Exactly! The rat came from your drawer, there’s no way you can turn a blind eye to it!”
Arms folded, Whitney simply watched the drama in silence.
She maintained an indifferent look despite being called out to do something.
“As I have just said, I’m letting the rat track down the person who brought it in. If no one owns up to it, this mess, however big it becomes, will be her responsibility.”
Finally, someone couldn’t bear the pressure from the rat any longer.
“I know who put it in your drawer. Catch it quickly and I’ll tell you.”
Nevertheless, Whitney’s mind was sharp as a knife. “Tell me first. Only then will I catch it.”
The young girl subsequently stood up and pointed at Lana. “It’s—”
“Why are you pointing at me? Are you trying to make baseless accusations? You have no right to speak here!”
Outraged, Lana sprang to her feet and slammed her hand on the table before turning to confront Whitney.
“Whitney! Why are you making such a big fuss over a rat? Do you really need to turn the logistics department upside down over something so trivial?”
Lana’s reaction gave Whitney her answer.
“She didn’t say it was you. However, given how anxious you are, you must have been behind this due to the grudge you hold against me.”
Lana snorted, eyes brimming with contempt. “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. It’s not like the rat has picked me out.”
Whitney continued calmly, “Fine. If you refuse to admit it, I can check the surveillance feeds. I heard that Mr. Newton hates it when his staff engages in office politics. I wonder what the consequences are when I hand over the evidence to him.”
Cowed by the threat, Lana turned pale.
Nonetheless, there was no letting up from Whitney. “I just want to know who the culprit is. If it was you, I won’t pursue the matter any further, as I was the one who did you wrong first. So, I’ll graciously accept your revenge. However, both of us will be even after this.”
Upon hearing the words, Lana began to waver and gave her close colleagues a look.
When she saw a few of them nod, she admitted, “It was me. When you rushed home without finishing your work yesterday, someone saw Isaac come over to copy the data from your computer. And today, you were seen copying documents back to your office computer with your flash drive. Your relationship with Isaac is now clear to all! Not only have you p*ssed me off to have Isaac cover for you on your first day of work, everyone else feels the same way too. I just did what everyone wanted but had no guts to do!”
Everyone implicitly acknowledged what Lana was saying when they lowered their heads in guilt.
“Whitney, seducing Isaac is no big deal. If you really want to prove yourself, you should have Mr. Newton eating out of your hand. Only then will I acknowledge your prowess!”
Whitney sniggered in response. “Id*ots.”
Staying true to her word, she was as calm as a cucumber upon setting off to catch the rat.
When it saw her coming for it, the rat was stricken with fear as it scurried for dear life. However, Whitney’s reaction was lightning-fast. Upon passing Lana by, she grabbed the former’s keyboard and dashed on ahead.
After forcing the rat into a corner, she stepped on its tail with great accuracy before raising the keyboard in the air and slamming it down.
“Argh!”
Squeak!
Amidst the squeal of the rat and shrieks of the ladies, the rat lost consciousness upon impact.
Its eyes rolled up and its four limbs dangled in the air, a sight that stunned everyone present.
What a ferocious woman!
Meanwhile, Lana’s face had lost all color when she saw Whitney hitting the rat with her keyboard. In fact, the sight itself was enough to nauseate her.
Underneath everyone’s fearful gazes, Whitney turned slowly around and declared, “I’m someone who never causes trouble. That said, if anyone dares to get on my nerves, I’ll definitely show no mercy. On top of that, stop using such childish tricks against me. I’m afraid of many things, but snakes and pests aren’t among them. If you still intend on testing my limits, I dare you to put a snake in my drawer the next time. Let’s see who it bites in the end.”
She grew up in the mountains and had even seen poisonous snakes before. Thus, such animals did not scare her at all.
After making herself clear, she casually threw Lana’s keyboard aside and returned to her seat.
Everyone else quickly stepped aside and opened up a path for her.
Upon returning to her table, Whitney pulled out the dirty drawer and took it to the washroom to be cleaned. This is from .
The moment she was gone, one of the girls shouted, “Go and check on the rat. See if she has killed it or not!”
One of the braver male colleagues to a closer look. “It’s still alive. I can still see its claws twitching. There’s also no blood. I suppose it has only fainted.”
“Argh! Kill it and throw it out. This is unbelievably disgusting! Hurry up and get the cleaner here to clean up the place. It needs to be scrubbed down with disinfectant!”
Meanwhile, Whitney could faintly hear her colleagues’ screams from the washroom.
Meanwhile, Whitney could faintly hear her colleagues’ screams from the washroom.
After clearing out the torn documents, she gave the drawer a quick rinse.
It seems Lana hates my guts now.
Whitney let out a sigh of resignation.
When she was taking care of the dolphins at Charles’ oceanarium, she barely had any colleagues, while the head and manager of the oceanarium were also friendly to her.
Never in her life did she need to deal with office relationships like those in Newton Group.
Do the hundreds of colleagues on every floor resent me? Why? I clearly didn’t do anything. All that happened was Isaac backing me up when Charles ordered me to do some work. And now, I have become public enemy number one in the logistics department.
As aggrievement swelled up within Whitney, she bit her lip in defiance.
“Since they want to get me, let them try. At most, I’ll fight them to the death. Let’s see who will come up on top in the end!”
In her frustration, Whitney slapped the water in the sink.
However, the impact splashed her face and clothes with water.
Is the universe trying to tell me that destroying my enemies will only result in a pyrrhic victory?
She couldn’t help but recall what Charles said to her during the journey back home.
I hope you’ll live up to your words. Since you’re serious about working here, prove yourself to me and don’t create any messes that I have to clean up. Also, stay away from the women in the office. If there’s any trouble, you’ll have to handle it yourself.
When Charles’ handsome face emerged in her mind, a sense of dejection set into her.
If this blows up and reaches him, I don’t suppose he’ll help me? Who knows, he might even give me a scolding, accusing me of stirring up trouble and bringing chaos to the department. And after that, he would kick me out of the company.
With that thought in mind, Whitney wasn’t so keen on fighting the ladies to the bitter end.
By the time the head of the logistics department returned, the drama had already ended.
Whitney handed over the work she completed the night before and asked for a copy of the chewed-up document.
Although the department head could tell that something was amiss with his subordinates, he couldn’t put his finger on what it was. All he did was reminded them to focus on their work.
Even though Whitney had planned to let the matter slide, Lana and her gang were still worried that she would tell on them.
During lunchtime, Whitney was sitting alone at the company cafeteria when Lana and four of her female colleagues sat at her table with trays in their hands and grins on their faces.
The seats on both her table were quickly occupied.
