The wolf had initially been stunned when she sat in front of the bald woman for the first time, looking over her closely. She was clearly powerful, her form radiating intense magical energy that was larger than the wolf's several dozen times over. Not only was she powerful, but she reeked of dark magics, not unsimilar to those used by powerful adversaries of hers in a past life. Orochi came to mind.
However, as she had the tea offered to her and very sneakily approached the seated woman, she knew that she wasn't similar at all to Orochi, Yami, or any other foe she had faced that utilized dark magic. She was kind. Her spirit and soul were kind, weighted by the burden of using detested magics in order to keep the world safe.
Sacrificing one's personal beliefs to do the right thing was difficult, and the woman's eyes were haunted by age and countless battles fought to keep Humanity safe. The Sorcerer Supreme was a good person, she could tell.
So, the great white wolf had explained her plight, who she was, where she had wound up, and the sudden situation she found herself in. The burden of proof was an easy one to provide though. For one, being an intelligent magical wolf had some upsides. Then came the proof of her just casually moving the position of the sun in the sky, before feeling an odd power washing over her, time reverting back to before she had shifted the Earth.
The wolf glanced up at the bald woman in front of her, eyes meeting for a brief moment before the wolf dipped her head down in both thanks and respect to the Sorcerer Supreme. She understood that this was a difficult thing to ask, but the woman seemed confident in her choice.
Well… the wolf didn't ask to have the fancy glowing green rock. Or any item or artifact for that matter. She asked for help, maybe a little advice, and the cryptic and ancient woman decided to give her a rock. Sure, the magical energies inside her were screaming for her to take the offering, the glowing stone almost pulling at the wolf, encouraging her to collect it.
So, she did. She pressed her nose against it, a brilliant green glow enveloped the wolf, and then vanished. The wolf looked up at the woman before her, giving a bark of thanks. She cast her gaze around the courtyard, and then paused, blinking.
Something wasn't right. No one was moving. There was no wind grazing through her fur. There was no motion in her vision at all. The world had become silent, not a single sound aside from her own breathing and the shifting of her claws on the flooring reached her ears.
She turned her gaze all around herself and confirmed that, indeed, time itself was frozen. She shuddered at the eerie quiet and empty feeling world, before turning her attention back toward the Sorcerer Supreme.
The wolf felt different. More whole. Complete in a sense, more like herself than she had since waking up. She felt an odd sensation working through her body, flowing and working through her body as she moved. Yet, as she stood there in the frozen world, she realized it wasn't flowing for everyone else. Was this time?
She flexed her will on reality, time resuming without issue, and the wolf stared up at the Ancient one while wagging her tail and giving the woman a dopey grin, lolling her tongue out. The wolf glanced around the courtyard and confirmed that no one had noticed any time changes or the pausing or movement of the sun. It was just a normal day for them.
"Don't make me regret this…" The woman warned. The wolf was fully aware that the woman could likely take back the Time Stone by force if she wanted to. So, deciding to give thanks to the woman, she decided to hatch a plan, using her newfound powers in a test run to see how well they'll work.
She found out soon that they would indeed work, as another wolf appeared behind the Sorcerer Supreme. It was her, just… in a little bit. She gave a bark at the same time the new wolf gave a bark, and they both moved together to show the bald woman good old wolf love.
The wolf that was soon to be her jumped up and set its paws on the Ancient One's shoulders, giving her a biiiiiig lick right across the face. The original wolf also jumped up and dragged her tongue along the back of the woman's neck and shaved head.
The soon-to-be-her wolf took off and leaped over the walls of the courtyard, vanishing from view as the magical disguise hid the courtyard from the outside. Now, she concluded the activation of her plan, sending herself back in time three seconds. Unfortunately, that was still a massive power draw on her energy, even with the stone.
She felt the world stretch and shift around her, and suddenly she found herself looking at her past self. So, she did what she had seen herself do previously, licking the powerful woman right across the face, and then taking off, leaping over the courtyard walls and darting away, giving a playful bark toward the Sanctum and darting back off into the streets of New York.
She was fairly weak still, but… The wolf now had something that could change that. She needed practice, to fight, and to train. Additionally, the battle could have gone better... Maybe a round two of the invasion was in order.
~{O}~{O}~{O}~
A loud bark drew everyone's attention to the large canine bounding her way toward the group of Avengers standing in plain clothes around Thor and Loki. The two held onto a cylinder with the Tesseract in the center, the device humming with power in preparation for a teleport. Thor was the first to speak, raising an arm in greeting, seeming excited to see the big white canine.
"Lady Amaterasu! You missed the meeting with Phil, son of Cole! He—" Thor was interrupted by Tony as the billionaire spoke up, addressing the God of Thunder.
"Thor, buddy, it's just Coulson. Phil Coulson is his name. Or stick-in-the-mud, you can call him that too. Maybe helicopter parent as well," Tony spoke, glancing behind himself to the rest of the group, grinning far too wide at the eye rolls in response to his words.
"You mortals and your odd naming conventions, I do not understand them," Thor grumbled, shaking his head and looking confused. Loki gave an angry huff and tugged at the cylinder with the cube on it, jostling Thor's arm. "Have patience, brother. I am saying goodbye."
"Where did ya run off to, Wolfy? You seemed in a hurry," Clint spoke up.
He stepped a little closer toward the large canine and ignored Thor's protest of "That is Lady Amaterasu and—" Clint instead grinned and leaned in to pat the canine on the head, giving her a little scritch behind the ears, which she happily leaned into.
After a brief moment, she stepped away, giving a happy little wag as she brushed by Clint and stepped in front of the pair of Gods waiting to leave, sitting down in front of them both. She turned to face Thor, and gave him a dopey grin, her tongue lolling out a little and gave a happy little "wurf." The God jovially smiled and reached down and offered her his hand to sniff in greeting, before moving his hand to brush along her neck fur and scritch under her chin.
"It was very nice to meet you as well, Lady Amaterasu! I'm hoping the next time we meet, it will be under better circumstances and for a longer period," Thor spoke. He gave the wolf a little ruffle on the noggin and then stood up straight.
The Avengers around the trio watched quietly, Tony leaning in to whisper something to Bruce, to which the scientist shushed him and told him "not to ruin the moment", which Tony merely grumbled back to in response.
The white wolf gave Thor another happy little "rurr" of sound, and then slooowwwlllyy shifted her gaze to look at Loki, the God of Mischief scowling at the canine as if staring at her hard enough would make her burst into flames. The wolf stared at him from the corner of her eye, appraising him for a moment, before turning her head up and away, dismissing him entirely.
"Awoof," she spoke.
Thor snorted and slapped his palm over his mouth, muffling his laughter behind his hand. Loki, meanwhile, snarled in rage behind the metal mask covering the lower half of his face. The God of Mischief tensed his legs and lunged for the wolf, growling under the mask like a feral animal, before being stopped dead by the laughing Thor, the God of Thunder shoving him back and taking a breath, grinning down at the canine.
"Please, such words are not fitting for one such as yourself," Thor smiled, turning his attention back to his brother and shoving the cylinder into Loki's hands once more. The thinner Asgardian merely glared daggers at the wolf while Thor spoke. "I am afraid we must bid you farewell."
"Woof?" The wolf asked, tilting her head to the side, and then adding on afterward a soft, "Aruff?"
"We are leaving to Asgard. Loki shall face punishment for his actions. Regretfully I cannot stay and assist you, however…" Thor turned his attention toward Clint, humming in thought for a moment. "Barton, could you help Lady Amaterasu in my absence? She needs… er, could you repeat that?"
"Awuff!" The canine barked happily, her tail giving an eager little flick on the ground as she watched the exchange.
"She says she needs a detailed explanation of the events of the day prior, complete with times and locations," Thor spoke. He gave Clint a friendly smile and nod, while the Archer only raised an eyebrow at the God's words, glancing between the wolf and the Asgardian several times.
"Bork," the wolf added.
"…and a map." Thor tacked on, smiling happily at the confused human, completely unaware of how strange the request was. He turned to face Loki once more, gripping the handle of the cylinder as the Tesseract began to hum with power. "We must leave and let Loki face proper trial on Asgard. Good luck, friends, may we meet again for glorious battle! Feel free to visit!"
Thor twisted his half of the cylinder and locked it into place, the pair suddenly enveloped in a brilliant blue light and launched into the sky, the two vanishing without a trace in the bright evening.
The wolf turned her attention to Clint, who stood there, frozen for a moment at the odd request being thrust upon him. Barton turned his gaze down to the wolf, and then to the spot Thor and Loki had vacated, and then back to the canine.
"I.. what? Sorry, Wolfy, I wasn't really with the team for most of that before the battle, I don't know how helpful I'm going to be," he cast his gaze around at the several Avengers still milling about, pleading with his eyes for someone to come step in.
Natasha decided to step in, tilting her head innocently as she glanced at the wolf, and then at Tony, giving the billionaire a little look. "Tony, you say you're smart. Why don't you help our canine friend here?"
"Ha! No. I'm not falling for your innocent little routine and reverse psychology again, miss Romanoff, if that is your real name," Tony ribbed playfully. He took a glance down at the large white canine staring at him with big, innocent eyes, and snorted once, turning his attention back to Natasha. "Besides, I'm allergic."
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"Tony, I read your profile. You aren't allergic to dogs." Natasha stated bluntly as if daring the billionaire to come up with another flimsy excuse to not help.
Clint let a little grin onto his face, while Steve Rogers stood off to the side, waiting to step in if necessary. Banner, meanwhile, casually stepped closer toward the large wolf and knelt down, letting her sniff at his palm and then giving the wolf some soft ear rubs.
"No, no, I'm allergic to bullshit." Tony snipped back, using both hands in front of him to gesture to the large canine happily wagging her tail on the pavement, leaning into Bruce's gentle and curious touch. "Thor's absolutely messing with us, and I refuse to believe Fido here is some sort of deity. Maybe she fell into a vat of radioactive tick repellant," he paused for a moment and then addressed Banner, rolling his eyes. "Banner, c'mon, stop fraternizing with the enemy. We had plans, remember?"
"Enemy? She's a wolf, Tony," Bruce raised an eyebrow, turning from his crouch to look up at the inventor, "and what plans, I didn't agree to anything."
"Plans that I made up just now, those plans." Tony reached down and grabbed Bruce by the wrist, dragging him off slowly toward the Audi parked down the road, much to Banner's disappointment.
"But, Tony! Magic wolf!" Bruce complained, only half-resisting the grip of Stark, letting himself be led away to the quiet promises and temptations of Tony telling him of new lab designs and research funding, perking up the scientist slightly amidst his mumblings about magic dogs and stubborn rich people.
The wolf gave a soft, curious whine, and turned to face Clint, looking up at him with big, innocent eyes, letting her tail flick gently on the ground as she watched the Archer. Seeing Barton avoid her gaze, the wolf quickly turned to face Natasha, the super spy meeting the wolf's gaze with a light smirk. She then glanced over to Clint, and then to Steve, who was watching the proceedings with a mildly confused and concerned expression.
"C'mon Barton, let's make this an evening. Just the three of us, unless Cap wants to come along," Natasha glanced over toward Steve, raising an eyebrow and tilting her head slightly as an invitation to join.
"No, no, I should get going, don't let me ruin your evening," Steve pushed away, raising his hands and brushing off the proposal in dismissal.
"Oh good, I was hoping it would be just the three of us. Now we can teach Wolfy here to steal Fury's boots," Clint added, giving Steve a toothy smile.
The white wolf tilted her head, glancing between the two super spies before the wording of the pair clicked. The wolf wheeled around and sat directly between the two agents, staring up directly at Rogers and giving him an innocent puppy look. That is, before she switched to giving him an almost evil toothy grin, tongue lolling out and her tail wagging faster at the thought.
"You realize Fury will skin the dog if you do that, right?" Steve sighed, placing a palm on his face. "Fine, fine, I'll be your babysitter."
The great white canine gave a happy little "wuff" of appreciation, stepping forward to Steve and leaping up onto her hind legs, planting her paws on his shoulders and giving him a big lick right across the cheek, causing the star-spangled man to scrunch up his nose and pull away from the excited canine.
The three humans and one supernatural canine deity gradually made their way down the sidewalk, the combination of plain clothes and a well-behaving large dog made the four blend into the city without issue, only getting a second glance for someone to look at the wolf and smile. They made their way through the streets of New York, weaving through and around a multitude of people making their way homes or toward bars to sit down after the hell of a day they had. No one could blame them for pounding back a shot or two after witnessing an alien invasion after all.
Clint and Natasha explained to Steve and the wolf that they were going to head to a SHIELD safe house for the night. It had enough beds, food and entertainment for all four of them, and additionally had paper maps that would assist in the retelling of the invasion.
Steve was interested in learning more about the history of the hideout they were approaching, asking more specific questions once he discovered that the SHIELD safe house had been built nearly 70 years prior in response to the Nazi attacks on allied bases. Secure and hidden places were a necessity to hide from spies and avoid being hit by bombs meant to kill high-ranking individuals.
They were so engrossed in their discussion, in fact, that they missed the white wolf slipping away from the trio, the large canine wandering off to the side as they passed by a small natural park on their walk. They also missed the loud crack of wood being splintered and shredded, or the amazed giggles of children and adults alike.
After a few more minutes of walking and a few questioning gazes from the general public toward the four, they made their way in front of the safe house. Clint allowed Natasha and Steve to go ahead of her, while he stayed behind and out of the way, waiting for the entrance to open up. When Natasha and Steve finally stepped in, he heard the padding of large paws coming up from behind him and decided to wait for Wolfy to enter the building before closing the door behind himself.
Well, that had been the plan. Until the wolf had swept his legs out from under him and sent Clint spilling into the grass as the white wolf trotted toward and through him while carrying a whole branch from a tree, the chunk of wood being the cause of Clint's fall.
The great white wolf turned around and gave a muffled bark of excitement around the thick tree branch, spitting it out at Clint's feet, before turning and trotting off happily into the building, leaving an exasperated Barton on the ground.
~{O}~{O}~{O}~
Now that the four of them had settled into the building, they sprawled themselves out amongst the two couches, all eyes on the coffee table sitting in the middle of the group, a large map with multiple little Monopoly pieces on it to represent different people at various points and positions as they spoke.
Unfortunately for the Humans that were explaining things and recording said explanation and briefing to later give the footage to Coulson, the wolf was, incredibly, utterly, indisputably… bored. It was just talking and arguing about slight differences in times and positions by several meters, and the great canine had already nodded off once, struggling to keep her eyes focused on the map.
The wolf decided to turn her attention inward toward herself. Shifting her head on Natasha's lap a little. She took this moment to freeze time around herself so she could think without interruption.
She could feel her connection to the heavens strengthening slightly. If her memory served her correctly, she'd be able to turn night to day, and now day to night. Well, she could. She shouldn't. People seemed to freak out when the sun vanished from the sky. She couldn't figure out why though, it was only night, the sun was still there, just on the other side now!
The wolf hummed softly to herself, shifting her attention. She washed her magic through her body, feeling things out, trying to understand exactly what this "gift" she had been given was. She puzzled over it for a moment, before furrowing her brows, feeling that odd tingly sensation similar to that of when she had licked the spicey cube. The "Tesseract" or whatever they had called the annoying block.
She'd have to play with that later.
She blinked, and dipped out for a moment, listening in on the conversation she had been ignoring, hoping that maybe Natasha, Clint, and Steve were discussing something more interesting.
They were not, instead bickering over the exact location that Thor had ripped Loki out of the Quinjet and the specific time too. She blinked slowly, whining in her head about how detailed and thorough this all was. She should have asked for a pamphlet, maybe.
She blinked and jerked her head back as a hand waved in front of her face, and glanced up, finding Natasha looking at her curiously, an eyebrow raised questioningly. Oh, the whine hadn't been in her head… The wolf flicked an ear and glanced over to the couch opposite the pair, seeing Steve and Clint pausing in their explanation to look at her.
She huffed lightly and folded her ears back in embarrassment, grumbling to herself lightly as she shuffled forward and settled her head on Natasha's lap, giving a low groan as she turned her gaze back to the map.
"You all good, Wolfy? Do you, uh, need to go out or something?" Clint asked, somewhat unsure.
The large canine merely huffed and rolled her eyes in response to Clint and then looked down to the map, lifting a paw up and waving it at the map as if gesturing for him to continue. Steve, Natasha, and Clint glanced at one another and then continued their explanation and drew everything out on the map. The wolf, meanwhile, hid her embarrassment with a yawn, rolling her eyes to look up at Natasha Romanoff, shuffling a little further onto her lap. The Russian just smirked lightly and rested a hand on top of the wolf's head, rubbing behind the canine's ears. The wolf gave a happy little growl and huff, enjoying the attention and petting lightly.
She was getting restless and wanted to run a bit. She had enjoyed running around in a past life, leaping from great heights or climbing impossible surfaces. Briefly, she wondered if she could jump again while in the air, pushing off of that barrier that formed under her. She didn't see why not, she didn't see any reason that she couldn't.
Now that she thought about it, what about her other brush techniques? She could clearly move the position of the world to face the sun or the moon, that wasn't in question. She could recall her brush technique to slow time and disorient enemies. But there were holes in her memory, areas where she knew she could do them, she just couldn't remember how. No elemental magic for now, it seemed.
The great white wolf gave a happy little hum, shifting a little in her spot on the couch. More celestial brush techniques back in her possession, movement abilities familiar to her, and… oh right, she had that spear! She was absolutely delighted, her tail giving a happy wriggle against the couch as she sorted through everything.
Maybe this new world wouldn't be so awful after all. She was regaining familiar abilities to herself, had friendly people that knew their way around, and had already gone about helping humans! Sure, she had a strong longing in her heart for her past, but… Maybe this could turn out alright. She'd give it a chance.
She hummed, letting Clint and Natasha and Steve continue pouring over the map in detail, explaining things to the wolf. She heard every word, observing the map while in her mind was sorting through the information, adjusting her plan according to what she was being told.
Finally, after what had felt like hours had passed, the wolf had drifted off into imagining chasing birds through a wide expansive field, all the while observing the map. It sounded like they were done, so she gave a huff and stood up. She jumped off the couch and stretched, letting out a groan as she shook herself out from head to toe, tail giving a final flick as she turned around to face the three.
The large white wolf flicked her tail and trotted down to sit in front of the door, giving a little whine as she looked at the three. Steve got to his feet relatively quickly once the wolf nosed at the round door handle, and just as the thawed-out-hero made it halfway across the room… the wolf gave a little wink and what could be mistaken as a smile.
She vanished. The wolf pulled on that weird magic she felt floating around in her being, wanting to see just what the magic energy that felt like the spicey cube could do. She ended up teleporting herself through the door and a little to the right, out of view of both the window and the door.
"What- did you see that too?" The wolf cocked an ear and listened into the building, huffing softly with laughter as she heard the utter confusion from Steve, and the quiet "what the fuck," from Clint. Natasha, meanwhile, merely hummed as she looked at the door, and then returned her attention to the map.
"I think I'm going to like that Собачка." Natalie spoke lightly, mirth filling her voice.
The white wolf turned and took off immediately, keeping the mental image of the map in mind as she pushed magic into her legs and launched herself forward, racing down the street and weaving through people. She noticed a large piece of construction equipment currently scooping up hunks of rock and rubble from the street and setting it into a large truck. She narrowed her eyes and leaped forward, planting her feet and then springing up hard, pushing powerfully off the ground and over the equipment.
Well, time to see if she could still move as freely as she used to.
She felt herself starting to slow in her ascent, and flipped herself over, using her familiar abilities to jump again mid-air, launching herself clear over the workers and large metal constructs before hitting the pavement and continuing her rush through the city and out, following the mental map in her head as she ran.
She gave a happy little growl at her accomplishment. This was going very well for her. She eventually ran out of magic to enhance her speed, but that didn't stop her from racing through the streets and further still, the sun completely dipping passed the horizon and letting the world fall into night. With a joyful bark, she flexed her powers on the Time Stone in her possession, the power starting to build within and around her, her body glowing a progressively brighter green.
She was going back to take the Chitauri on again, far stronger and more prepared now that she knew what was happening. She had a plan, and was going to do things even better this time around!
The great white canine could only feel a sense of excitement. She had another chance to help more people! She would get it right this time. She was more powerful already, and she knew she would be able to make a difference. She just had to play it safe and avoid detection to not create paradoxes, no problem for her!
The wolf came to a stop outside of city limits and looked up at the moon, basking in the light of the sun being reflected off of it, giving her just a little more confidence and energy for her task. She raised her head and howled, the green light eclipsing her body. The wolf vanished, the glow of light fading around where she used to be. The howl echoed off the buildings in the distance and faded off into the fields of the night.
She was ready now. The Chitauri would have no idea what hit them.
