Above a nameless world a mass of flesh and bone arrived. The being used its million and one eyes to survey the world as it was slowly covered by its swarm. The natives of this world were only barely what it considered sapient and had yet to develop anything that could possibly resist its coming. All its drones momentarily paused as they felt a wave of its pleasure flow through them before returning to the task of consuming any and all organic material that remained on this world.
It had gained much on this world, new materials, not found on the countless other worlds already consumed. New genetic strains that could, in time, be used to improve its drones even further. Most importantly, confirmation that with its experimental slip-stream propulsion it would be able to bring its swarm to worlds that were previously out of its reach.
As the last of the information gained from this world reached it, the devourer closed its eyes all at once to bask in the pleasure of becoming ever greater, ever closer to perfection.
It opened its eyes and there was nothing. Darkness greeted its vision, silence its ears and void its psychic bonds. For the first time since it could remember it was well and truly alone. Confusion led to fear which led to panic as every explanation for its situation was examined and discarded.
Without context by which to tell time it floated in empty space for what felt like an eternity, until a small whisper of light began to emerge. All million and one eyes turned to focus on light which continued to grow from nothing, until finally when even its own mass was dwarfed by the light a voice was heard through a new bond.
“Welcome oh great devourer of worlds, and bask in the radiance of that which is I.” It’s voice was loud, arrogant and sarcastic.
One of thousands of tentacles struck towards the light in an attempt to kill that which had dared to cause whatever this was, only to pass through the light without any resistance. The voice only released a deep rumbling laugh in response.

“Your aggressiveness, your instinctual drive to consume all that you see is exactly why you have been chosen.” It explained.
The devourer paused, and examined this creature of light in more detail. It searched its memories for similar creatures but found none. It searched for the material this being could be made from but found none. It searched desperately for weakness, anything it could use to consume this thing but found none. So, it began to speak slowly, its voice not having been heard in millenia.
“What manner of creature are you Light?” It limited itself to this one question, the most important, one which could hint at a flaw to finally kill this thing. In response the light shifted and began to change shape. It flowed like liquid until its form began to resemble one of the many reptiles it had previously consumed. Its scales were black, illuminated only by the red glow of the pulsing blood underneath. Its eyes seemed to hold fire within as they stared down at the devourer. And lastly its fangs, sharper and longer than eany the devourer had ever consumed, dripped dark smoke down its slithering form. The snake's voice seemed to gain even more volume as it answered with a flickering tongue.
“You may address me as Apophis, Serpent from the Nile, Lord of Chaos, God of the Eclipse.” It answered. “Be honored creature, for you have been chosen as my representative in the great game that all the gods have agreed to play.” Its form slithered closer until the Devourer could feel the heat of its breath on its skin.
“I have scoured many realities, looking for a creature such as you, one who can defeat all other chosen that the gods place upon the future battlegrounds. You whose only instinct is to consume all life shall go forth and bring terror and death to all who oppose you, in my name.” Its eyes brightened in excitement as it finished speaking.
“What say you Devourer?”
Just as it finished speaking every appendage of the devourer converged into a single point. A spear aimed directly into the mouth of the creature was sent forward with as much speed as it could manage. The spear of hardened bone pierced the roof of the serpent's mouth and entered the soft flesh of its brain. For a moment the devourer feared that nothing had happened, until all at once the creature seemed to dissolve into smoke, leaving only darkness once more. After watching for any threats the Devourer closed its million and one eyes, pondering the events that had just happened. When it opened them it found itself once more in a different location.
