Chapter 1: The Rift

Chapter 1: The Rift

Liam stumbled, his breath catching in his throat as the ground beneath him dissolved into shimmering, iridescent mist. One moment he was hiking through a familiar forest, the next, he was plummeting into an abyss of swirling colours.  He landed hard, the impact jarring his bones, on soft, moss-covered earth.  Above him, the rift – a tear in reality – pulsed with an otherworldly light.

He wasn't in Kansas anymore.

This world was a symphony of vibrant greens and blues, the air thick with the scent of unfamiliar blossoms. Towering trees, their leaves like polished jade, scraped the sky.  Strange, bioluminescent fungi illuminated the forest floor, casting an ethereal glow.

Suddenly, a rustling in the undergrowth.  Liam drew his hiking knife, heart hammering. A creature emerged – small, furry, with iridescent wings and eyes like molten gold. It chittered, a sound like wind chimes, before speaking in surprisingly clear English.

"Lost, little sprout?" it chirped, its voice high and melodious.

"I… I think so," Liam stammered, lowering his knife slightly.

"I'm Pip," the creature said, hovering before him. "And you are...?"

"Liam," he replied, still wary.

Pip landed on his shoulder, its weight surprisingly light. "Welcome to Aethel," it chirped. "I'll guide you.  But be warned, little sprout, Aethel is not always kind."
