In the dreamlike haze that permeated his life ever since he'd Jenny had become what he was, a lot had gone by the wayside.
His phone had thirteen missed calls all from his boss. He had missed three days of work.
His boss spoke in the kind of cadence that encouraged guilt, as if they'd care if he wasn't such a cheap patsy.
"I trusted you, you've made me feel like a fool. I thought you were a member of my team."
"I'm sorry Patrick I was -"
"I don't care, do you think we need you here, there are a thousand other people who can do what you do. Hell, a monkey might do it better.
Dick let out an exaggerated overemphasized sigh.
"Tell you what, you come in right now, be in the office in fifteen minutes, and you get your job back"
Obviously they couldn't find someone to take his place. And if it was his place, then why would he give it back.
"My job?"

"Yes, your job, or have you decided you don't want it anymore"
In a fit of mute obstinate anger he decided it was now his job.
He looked at Jenny, who nodded with her omnipresent grin.
Dick choked as if a bird flew into his mouth as he stuttered for a moment as if confused.
"Your job's waiting for you when you come back, but I don't know why we pay a piece of crap like you"
And hung up.
Gerald grinned, he was now sure he was set, a life of leisure was in the books.
He didn't have to pay for anything for the rest of his life. And he was set up in one of those positions that paid and he didn't have to do anything.
His ruminations were interrupted by a phone call.
An extremely angry man was on the other side of the call.
"HR just told me the work I used to do was your job. They're not paying me, they told me to talk to you."
Gerald, stunned, stuttered.
"I've got seniority, I've been doing this for years and a jumped up temp comes in and steals my job from under me.
"You better believe I'm coming for you."
The phone clicked. Line dead.
He looked to Jenny for answers.
"I can make sure you get what you want, but I can't change what other people know and feel"
Gerald suddenly felt like he'd missed a great deal of what was going on.
He was immediately startled by a bang bang bang on the front door. He was still spooked by the phone call so he took his trusty bat and inches the door open.
He found a forlorn man seated on his doorstep along with a thin reedy man that brought to mind bureaucracy and taxes. He only had a moment to recognize the man as the driver of his new car. Before he was pushed inside by the reedy man.
In a nasally voice that echoed with promises of paperwork, the man proclaimed, "You've come into a bit of property by paranormal means, we need to discuss where you go from here."
Gerald did not feel that it would be a great discussion for him.
