Chapter 1: Alexander Bellmont

Chapter 1: Alexander Bellmont

In the heart of an ancient, shadowy castle, a woman stood before a grand, ornate mirror. Her fingers traced intricate patterns in the air, magical energy flowing from her body, casting a spell that shimmered with an ethereal glow. The room was filled with a hushed, almost reverent silence, broken only by the soft hum of her magic. Through the mirror, she peered into countless realities, each one a window into a different world teeming with life. The scenes shifted rapidly, showing bustling cities, serene forests, and alien landscapes. Yet, her expression remained calm and imperturbable, her purpose unclear to any potential onlooker.

Suddenly, her gaze sharpened. One of these dimensions caught her attention. She leaned closer, her eyes narrowing as she observed the scene. “The barrier has fallen…,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. With a decisive motion of her hands, she broke the spell, and the mirror’s surface returned to its mundane reflection. Turning to two figures standing behind her, she announced, “It will soon be time.”

The morning sun shone over Pendragon City, a sprawling metropolis renowned for its cutting-edge technology and innovation. Skyscrapers of glass and steel towered over the streets, their surfaces reflecting the shining sunlight. The city buzzed with the energy of progress, its citizens immersed in the latest advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence. Amidst this technological marvel, Alexander Bellmont, a 25-year-old robotics mechanic, roused from his slumber and prepared for another day at Mek-Tek, the city’s leading robotics and tech company. Alexander let out a large yawn as his black hair fell gently into his purple eyes.

He moved quickly through his morning routine, a warm shower helping to shake off the last remnants of sleep. He dressed in his usual work attire, complete with a lab coat, of which he liked to roll up the sleeves.

As he prepared for the day, his mind wandered. Things had been good lately. He was close with his coworkers, Robert and Megan, and he harbored a budding crush on Lila, a receptionist at Mek-Tek. Today, he mused, might finally be the day he gathered the courage to ask her out.

Catching the train into the city, Alexander marveled at the blend of old and new that defined Pendragon City. Older buildings constructed of brick and stone stood side by side with sleek, modern skyscrapers, and the air buzzed with the hum of machinery. To the average citizen, the wonders of technology were the true marvels of their world. Arriving at Mek-Tek, he stepped into the bustling main lobby, his eyes scanning for Lila. Instead, he was greeted by Veronica, a receptionist with long red hair and blood-red eyes completing her perpetually unfriendly demeanor.

“Morning, Veronica,” Alexander said, trying to sound casual. “Have you seen Lila yet?”

Veronica barely glanced up from her work. “No, she’s not here yet,” she replied curtly.

“A-alright, thanks. Have a nice day!” Alexander said awkwardly, heading towards the elevators. He could feel Veronica’s eyes rolling behind him.

Upstairs in the lab, Alexander was welcomed by the familiar faces of Robert and Megan. Robert, a 27-year-old with olive skin and a neatly trimmed fade, and Megan, a 26-year-old with long brown hair and glasses, were more than just coworkers—they were his closest friends.

“Morning, Alex!” Robert called out; his voice cheerful. “Ready for another day of fixing the unfixable?”

“Always!” Alexander replied with a grin.

The morning passed in a blur of activity. The trio worked seamlessly together, repairing the various robots and machines. Alexander couldn’t help but feel grateful for the camaraderie they shared. He thought that some might not find this to be most thrilling, but for him, it was fulfilling and peaceful.

As noon approached, they took a break for lunch. Seated in the bustling cafeteria, Robert turned to Alexander. “So, Alex, you asked Lila out yet?”

Alexander sighed. “I was going to, but she wasn’t there this morning.”

Megan, ever the optimist, smiled encouragingly. “Keep your head up, Alex! We can see if she’s there on the way out today!”

Their conversation was interrupted by a news report on the cafeteria TV. The reporter spoke of a string of mysterious disappearances, with more people vanishing every few nights. Alexander leaned in, intrigued but also concerned.

“Do you think it’s gang activity?” Megan asked, her voice tinged with worry.

Robert shook his head. “I heard from one of the engineers that he knows someone who saw some strange creatures.”

“What kind of creature?” Megan asked, partly rejecting the thought but also curious. “An alien? A monster?”

Alexander immediately dismissed the idea. “There’s no such thing as aliens or monsters.”

“Probably just rumors,” Robert agreed. “But still, we should be careful.”

The rest of the day passed uneventfully. As they prepared to leave, Robert nudged Alexander. “You going to try and catch Lila on the way out?”

Alexander hesitated. “Should I?”

“Absolutely!” Robert said. “No reason not to!”

Megan nodded. “Lila seems nice. The worst she can say is no.”

Bolstered by their encouragement, Alexander felt a surge of confidence flow through him. “Alright, I got this!”
