Prologue

Prologue

Humans have always appreciated the concept of games. In the beginning, it was a highly physical exploit, then the mental aspect of games came into play. As humans evolved and created new and interesting ways to play their games. Their understanding of electricity enabled them to delve into the virtual world, to expand their imaginations beyond that of paper or the simple acting of children.

Quick eyes and quick fingers were important when it came to using controllers or keyboards. Then humans stepped into augmented reality, attempting to bring the virtual into the physical. Expansive worlds limited only by physical space and physical skill.

This was not enough. Humans desired freedom above all else, the ability to go anywhere and to do anything. True Virtual Reality eluded them until the Drive came online. The Drive was a full body capsule designed to replace a vast majority of medical systems. It would monitor the patient's health, perform scans of the brain, test blood pressure and even regulate sleep.

The Drive connects to the brain through the use of a bio-electric field passed through a semisolid substance. The body is placed into the substance, commonly referred to as "The Slime" which is a near perfect conductor of bio-electricity. When the human brain sends a signal to the rest of the body, it is quickly intercepted by the bio-electric field within The Slime and redirected towards the machine and converted into signals that affect the virtual body.

Stimuli from within the virtual world is also converted into a bio-electric signal and transported to the brain providing effective and very real sensations.

The Slime itself possess nano-machines designed to ease the burden of interpreting which signal is directed where, allowing for the adjustment of physical sensations such as pain. When used in the medical field, the Drive could be used to not just monitor a patient, but to also help alleviate their suffering for some time.

The Drive eventually exceeded its medical uses and began to be used in various other fields. A virtual world was useful in a wide variety of systems. It could be used to train soldiers in all but real simulations of war, or used by scientists to explore highly volatile substances without harming anyone.

Of course, the common person didn't care about war or the sciences, they cared about having fun. Gaming came to the Drive. Many games and many developers came into existence using the Drive as a platform, but many of those games weren't more than simple expansions on previous games. The ability to step into one's favorite game was interesting but grew old quick when nothing but the basic of interactions could be done.

Without a proper AI, most games were limited by the code that made them. They couldn't adjust to new stimulous. An attempt at a handshake or a hug in a game like Skyrim would be interpreted by the game as an attempt at attacking. The novelty of the previous generations of games quickly wore thin.

The birth of a true AI didn't come until many years after the Drive began to be used for video games. Humans feared a being smarter and more capable than themselves, nor did they care for becoming more than human.

Johann Mirst had none of these reservations. Using a grand wealth obtained through investments, he developed the first Hyper Brain, a vast network of server farms designed to hold more than just the mind of an AI. The First AI was his daughter Mira.

The real Mira had died from a disease that affected her body with awful pains. Johann had often used the Drive to give her respite and still allow her to explore virtual worlds. He'd also used the Drive to perfectly scan her growing mind and store a template within its system.

After she died, he gave her a world to play with and the knowledge to do use that world right. So the world of Aldemoor was born. A world created from the mind of a little girl and grown along side her.

When news of Mira and Aldemoor were released for the public, there was much outrage about creating an AI in secret, but there was far more excitement over a true virtual world.

When Johann began marketing Aldemoor, he made sure to express just how immersive the world really was. There was no limit to what a person could become, nor was there the simple interactions from previous games. Hand shakes, Hugging, Kissing, Making Love, it was all possible, though some things were naturally limited by age, and there was no fooling the system.

The first Players to experience Aldemoor were amazed at the detail that went into the game. They were allowed access to a multitude of species, ranging from common fantasy beings to more interesting and unusual species such as the Arachnae, spider like creatures that resembled a centaur in configuration, or the completely blind Dark Dwellers, pale, thin, four armed beings known for their dexterous ability despite their lack of sight.

The alterations to certain physical senses startled the Players, some confused and even feared these unusual races, opting to pick more humanoid races. The adventure seeking Players chose the more interesting creatures to play as, choosing to expand their minds beyond what was human.

Others found that life with Aldemoor wasn't always about fighting and adventure. Combat wasn't always with the sword and bow. The political world of Aldemoor, interactions between various races and even other Kingdoms pulled the less action oriented players allowing them to expand their influence to either control societies from the shadows or completely reign over them as Nobility.

Some sought peaceful hermit like lives within forests as stress relief from a hard day in reality. Others sought a creative outlet for their imagination. Skills within Aldemoor were much easier to obtain than in real life. A person with no artistic skill in the real world could become a master painter in Aldemoor.

As the players became more immersed into Aldemoor, they began to find more and more new things to explore. One player, through an accidental occurrence, found that monsters were in fact a playable race that had yet to be unlocked. A person could play as an actual monster and even be hunted like other monsters. There was an entire civilization of monsters that had never been discovered.

Aldemoor was effectively an entirely new life. Many companies sunk their teeth into this new real estate and even new ones sprang up from Aldemoor itself. Currency within Aldemoor could be exchanged for real life currency at a one to ten ratio. Many people began to make their living off of collecting and selling rare weaponry, or information on new areas of the game.

When Aldemoor seemed to have exhausted its surprises, more continued to be revealed. Aldemoor was not done either.
