Vol. 6 - Captivity - Chapter 27

Before moving onto the next phase of his work he decided to spend the experience he'd gained from the Trolls he'd recently ended. Since he didn't have that much experience he figured it wouldn't be a big deal to do so. At this point, each Troll killed was approximately equivalent to a single attribute point in anything but Magic. For the moment, killing Trolls was highly efficient since he could increase his attributes easily. When he opened his character sheet he gaped at the changes he saw.

Forget the amount of experience he'd earned, his Transmutation, Savant, and Shooting had all grown explosively. Looking them over he couldn't help but feel a little sad that his Transmutation didn't have an evolution after hitting rank one hundred as Quick Learner had. Then again it was an A rank ability so maybe it couldn't evolve. Even if it did it would evolve into an S rank ability so the requirements were probably pretty steep. He shook his head and dismissed those thoughts for the time being. The important part was it was getting higher in rank so it was getting stronger and more accurate.

He glanced at the sixty-five thousand experience he had now and began to spend it to increase his three lower attributes, starting with Agility. When he ran out of experience his attributes had only increased by a few points each. Power and Endurance had reached 269, while Agility stopped at 268. He was tempted to go kill one more trolls to even them out but he knew he'd be killing more than one on his way back to the surface and while working. No need to rush it. He hit the confirmation button to spend the points. A soft sigh escaped his lips as a warm current of energy flowed through his body. The smaller increase was far more pleasant than the sudden massive increase earlier.

When the feeling faded, Thomas felt refreshed and ready to get back to work. It was time for a few experiments. For the first one, he wanted to see if he could increase his visual abilities with some aide from an item. For that, he pulled two mana crystals from his inventory and quickly purified them. When they were completely clear he used his Transmutation again except this time he reshaped the mana crystals. The clear crystal flowed like water as it shifted into a round flat shape that looked like a pair of lenses sitting on his palms. He lifted one up and peered through it seeing nothing special but noting how clear and easy it was to see through.

These would form the lenses in a pair of glasses or maybe goggles he intended to try making. He wanted to amplify how far he could see mana particles through solid objects. It was an odd form of x-ray vision but it was definitely practical in some applications. Hopefully, it could be used to find signs of Snowlily through the walls of the cavern system the pirates were using. He set the lenses down and picked up a bar of Origin Steel. Transmutation was used to separate a piece onto a thin spur that was snapped off. The new piece was then reshaped slowly into two thin tubes held together by a bar in between them. He adjusted the tubes to be wider than the lenses so he could place the lenses inside and shrink the tube down to hold them in place solidly.

Thomas examined the pair of armless spectacles he'd created and smiled. They weren't nearly complete but they were nice looking already. Silver rims wrapped around crystal clear lenses. He lifted them up to his face and carefully adjusted them so that they would fit him perfectly. They were meant only for him after all. Once the adjustments were done he picked up the small piece of Sunshine Gold and started to Transmute it into a long thin flat bar that could be wrapped around the edge of the frame on the glasses as an accent and mana transmission point. He wanted this thing to be able to handle a large amount of mana.

Once the gold was inlaid on the frames and fused in place carefully, he set the goggles down and selected a piece of leather. A quick slice and he had a long straight length to use as a strap to hold it in place over his eyes. He cut the strip in half. The first half had one end fused to the edge of the frame, the same thing was done with the other half. Some origin steel was grabbed to make a simple buckle. He lifted the goggles to his face and used his own head to measure how much length he needed to cut off for a good fit. After the measurements, he cut some excess off. Some Origin Steel was removed from one of the ingots and reshaped into a buckle for the goggles. He set them in place, flipped the leather over to hold it in place, and fused it together.

With it all put together, he lifted it up and strapped it to his head. He buckled it on and slowly let go, just in case anything came apart. Nothing did and the goggles sat on his face. He looked through the crystal lenses and could see perfectly fine. If the crystals weren't so fragile he'd have thought the goggles would make excellent eye protection. Even if they didn't work as intended he could probably use them as flight goggles. After getting a feel for them they were removed and gently set down. He retrieved his pestle and mortar, broke a small chunk off the large Amalgamated Mana Crystal, and ground it back into powder. It was a little circular but, whatever.

After adding the Alchemists Oil into the ground mana crystal, he mixed it up. Now came the hard part. Not the enchanting itself but trying to get the image right and having it work properly with his 'All Seeing Eyes'. If this did work it would go a long way to helping him find his lost pupper. Thomas took a deep breath and conjured an engraving tool with his Metal magic. With his Power he had no need of a hammer, he hadn't for a while. He only used one out of habit and to slow-walk his work for the pirates. Now, he needed speed and efficiency, it was time to upgrade his abilities and go all out. He dipped the tip of the engraving tool into the mix and got to work.

He took his time and slowly began to engrave the enchantment into the Sunshine Gold. He used his preferred style giving the enchantment a look similar to circuitry. The image he was going for was complicated though. It was based more on the way he felt when looking through stone to see the mana particles within. He wanted that to be amplified to allow him to see much deeper. This was what he used to drive the enchantment, to give him a chance to find Snowlily within the caves. The engraving tool easily carved into the soft Sunshine Gold depositing the pure mana crystal shards. He had to dip frequently as he carved much faster this way than he did using a hammer and tapping away.

He found he liked working with the Sunshine Gold for enchanting. The soft material was so easily carved and the deposits seemed to stick so much better than with harder materials. Of course, it might have to do with the mana conduction of the material too. He'd have to test other good mana conductors and find out, later though. As he carved the enchantment he felt his mana dropping faster than just having summoned the engraving tool would mean. A lot faster. Curious he activated his 'All Seeing Eyes' and was surprised by what he could see. Pure white mana was flashing out from the tip of the engraving tool and down the entire length of the enchantment making it flash over and over.

No wonder his mana was draining faster than he expected. It was being pulled out of him and pumped into the enchantment constantly. He had no idea why. It was interesting but it didn't matter right now. He shut off his eyes and continued to engrave the enchantment with a focused mind. He carved the enchantment completely around the frame connecting the end to the beginning into a complete loop. Something unusual happened when the loop connected, it flashed with a blindingly bright white light that actually flooded the entire cave. Thomas clenched his eyes shut and shook his head, "What the hell?"

Once the light faded Thomas looked down at the completed goggles with a slight frown.

Thomas let out a long sigh as he read over the series of notifications. He was happy that he had created an item from the next rarity, though it just being called Rare was a little disappointing. He was happy that he had succeeded in creating something that could increase the power of his 'All Seeing Eyes', though it only being a couple of meters was disappointing. It was a series of ups and downs that left him disappointed in the end. After everything, the only true bright point was that he could actually create items to enhance his 'All Seeing Eyes'. It just wasn't strong enough. The goggles were pretty much useless for trying to see tens to hundreds of meters through the stone.

He let out another sigh and stored the goggles away. They weren't what he wanted but they were still useful. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked at the materials laying out in front of him. As he was trying to think of another way to scout the caves black mist started to gather once again. Thomas didn't even bother standing up as he pulled out his Spell Cannon and shot the Trolls in their heads as soon as they fully manifested. Once they faded away he collected their three mana crystals and stored them in his inventory. Hearing the roars of the Trolls and feeling the airwaves from them gave him a flash of inspiration.

He needed to test it first. For this test, he recovered his mana using Serenity. He wanted to have as much as he could for this. Once he was ready he lifted his right hand and called forth his mana. It slowly formed into a sphere above his palm. He didn't even know if this was possible but he didn't see why he couldn't. He willed the mana to convert to sound, not just noise but high frequency sound like a bat would use for echolocation. A subtle wave of sound erupted from his hand and hit the walls before bouncing back. For a brief moment, he felt something odd but couldn't place it. He had a feeling...

Thomas closed his eyes and repeated the process. A wave of sound erupted from the sphere above his palm once again. This time, with his eyes closed, he 'saw' the area around him when the soundwave bounced off of the walls and returned to him. It was only a flash and didn't last more than a moment, but he saw it. To prove it to himself he started to continuously release the soundwaves every second. The brief picture became multiple pictures that flashed quickly and became something like a black and white movie playing inside of his mind. He could see everything around him. The detail was shit and it was hard to tell distance but he could see in all directions at once. He could see potential in his new Sound Magic.

He could use this if he could make something that made a clearer picture. Something like... a sound bomb that could fill the entire cave system with soundwaves and bounce them back. The trick would be to find a way to map that information. If he could, then it would be possible to at least map the entire cave system even if it couldn't pinpoint Snowlily's location. That was still a problem he needed to solve. He had an idea about that though. They would need to keep her locked up in a cage of some sort. If he could get the mapping device to be more accurate and show him at least the shape and size of things in the tunnels he might be able to get a fix on the cage she was inside of.

He smiled and started to think of a way he could use this new discovery to his advantage. He'd have to think about it while working on his other items. The next thing that he planned to make was something he had an idea for a while back. He wanted to make anyone who tried to follow him pay and to do that he needed boobie traps. The deadliest boobytrap he could think of were the ever deadly claymore mines. He grinned broadly thinking of the shrapnel in the mines ripping the pirates to pieces. Yes, it was going to be fun making them pay.
