Chapter 3: Beneath the Ruins
Xenith Callorn stood at the edge of a massive excavation site, the harsh winds of Aegis Prime whipping around him as dust clouds swirled through the ancient ruins. Before him loomed the skeletal remains of an old civilization, remnants of towering spires, their foundations crumbling and shattered from centuries of decay. Behind him, his team of scientists and technocrats moved cautiously, setting up their equipment as they prepared to delve into the mysteries buried deep within the planet.
"Keep the scanners focused," Xenith ordered, his voice sharp as he eyed Vexara Lurenthis, the young scientist standing nearby. "We’re on the cusp of something monumental here. Don’t lose focus."
Vexara nodded but remained silent, her thoughts racing. The cryptic message they had intercepted led them to this precise location, yet no one on the team fully understood what awaited them. The ruins stretched out as far as the eye could see, but it was the strange energy signatures beneath the surface that had drawn them here.
As the ground scanners whirred to life, Vexara felt a subtle hum in the air. Something ancient was stirring beneath them, something vast and powerful. She glanced at Xenith, who, despite his cold exterior, seemed equally unnerved by the sensation.
“Sir, we’re picking up unusual readings,” a technician called out, his face illuminated by the holographic interface in front of him. “There’s a network of tunnels beneath us. It looks like some sort of… labyrinth.”
Xenith’s brow furrowed. “A labyrinth? Could it be part of the Astralis defense system?”
“Possibly,” Vexara replied, her mind racing through the historical records she had studied. “The Astralis civilization was known for its complex security measures. It’s likely this was designed to keep intruders out.”
Xenith smirked. “Well, let’s hope we don’t count as intruders.”
A few hours later, the team stood at the mouth of a massive cavernous entrance they had uncovered. The archway, though worn by time, still retained intricate carvings, alien glyphs that glowed faintly as if reacting to their presence. Vexara stepped closer, her fingers tracing the symbols.
“These markings... they’re some sort of language, but it’s like nothing we’ve seen before,” she whispered, her eyes wide with awe. “I need more time to decipher them.”
“We don’t have time,” Xenith replied bluntly. “The Technokratium expects results, and we’re already behind schedule.”
Vexara frowned but nodded, reluctantly stepping back as the excavation crew prepared to enter. The group of scientists and soldiers, outfitted with the latest tech suits, descended into the depths of the ruins. The deeper they ventured, the colder the air became, as though the very planet resisted their intrusion.
The tunnel walls, smooth and almost unnatural in their precision, pulsed faintly with a blue hue, casting eerie shadows. The path split into multiple directions, forcing Xenith to make quick decisions at each intersection.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
“Stay close,” he commanded, his voice cutting through the silence. “We don’t know what’s down here.”
They pushed forward, the tension mounting as strange noises echoed through the corridors. Metallic scraping, distant murmurs—sounds that couldn’t be explained. Vexara felt a chill crawl down her spine. It was as if the ruins were alive, watching them, judging them.
After what felt like hours, they reached a massive central chamber. In the center stood an enormous artifact—an obelisk of dark, gleaming material, adorned with the same glowing glyphs they had seen earlier. The obelisk emitted a low, resonant hum, vibrating in sync with the faint energy pulses in the air.
“This must be it,” Xenith breathed, his eyes widening with greed. “The core of the Astralis technology. The key to everything.”
Vexara approached cautiously, her mind overwhelmed by the implications of what they had found. The obelisk seemed to respond to her presence, the glyphs brightening as she drew near. She reached out, hesitating only for a moment before placing her hand on its surface.
A sudden surge of energy shot through her, and her vision went black.
She was no longer in the chamber. Vexara found herself standing in a vast, desolate landscape, the sky above her swirling with ominous clouds. In the distance, massive structures—like those in the ruins—rose from the ground, but these were whole, untouched by time. It was a vision of Aegis Prime as it had once been.
Before her stood figures cloaked in shadow, their faces obscured, yet their presence was unmistakably powerful. One of them stepped forward, a figure draped in the same alien symbols that covered the obelisk.
“You have come to seek the Astralis,” the figure’s voice echoed through her mind, cold and calculating. “But be warned, the price for such knowledge is steep. Power does not come without consequence.”
Vexara tried to speak, to ask what the figure meant, but her voice was swallowed by the overwhelming presence around her. The landscape shifted, and she saw flashes of destruction—cities burning, planets torn apart by war. A cosmic force beyond comprehension devouring entire civilizations.
The vision ended as abruptly as it began, and Vexara was back in the chamber, gasping for breath. Her hand was still on the obelisk, now faintly glowing in rhythm with her own heartbeat.
“Vexara! Are you alright?” Xenith’s voice snapped her back to reality, but his eyes were fixated on the obelisk, not on her. “What did you see?”
Vexara swallowed hard, still shaken by the vision. “This… this technology is more dangerous than we imagined. It’s not just a tool—it’s a weapon, capable of unimaginable destruction.”
Xenith’s expression hardened. “That’s exactly why we need to control it.”
Before Vexara could protest, a deep rumble reverberated through the chamber. The walls trembled as dust and debris began to fall from above. The obelisk’s hum grew louder, more menacing, as if reacting to their presence.
“Something’s wrong,” Vexara warned, her eyes darting to the glyphs that now pulsed erratically.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them split open, and from the chasm emerged mechanical tendrils—ancient defense systems that had been dormant for millennia. The team scattered as the tendrils lashed out, grabbing equipment and personnel alike with terrifying precision.
“We need to get out of here, now!” Xenith shouted, pulling Vexara to her feet.
As they sprinted toward the tunnel, a loud crash echoed behind them. Vexara glanced back to see the obelisk fully illuminated, its power awakening something deep within the ruins.
But it wasn’t just the defense systems.
In the shadows, something else stirred.
As Vexara and Xenith reached the surface, a deafening roar echoed from the depths below. The ground quaked violently, and the ruins began to collapse in on themselves.
But from the chasm, a massive silhouette emerged—a forgotten titan of the Astralis civilization, its glowing eyes locking onto them as it rose from its ancient slumber.
“By the stars…” Vexara whispered, her heart pounding in terror.
Xenith, for the first time, looked truly afraid. "We’ve awakened something far worse than we ever anticipated."
