End of an era.

It’s been years since the world knows peace. I can’t remember my life as a civilian that I’ve thrown away ages ago. The world couldn’t remember the times where the divines are just myth.

Probably because they are too busy fighting them perhaps? Or because this world is no longer a place to dream? I have no idea.

Why did I agree to be a hero again? To protect everyone? To defeat the evil gods? What a silly idea. I really miss silly. Now it’s all death, destruction and everything awful. When was the last time I laugh at jokes instead of a gutted demi god?

I can’t remember.

“your thoughts are pathetic for a hero…” the harmonious yet strong voice of a woman in front of me echoes through the empty battlefield.

I opened my eyes and stared at the massive storm with occasional thunder above me. With smokes and fire reaching towards it. The smell of burnt metal, flesh and flowers filled my nose.

I chuckled but choked on my own blood as I stared at the picture perfect blond beauty knight using a spear piercing my belly as a crutch. Cuts and bruises littered her body but a sword is sticking out of her heart.

“Hey… let me… Let me… *gasp* enjoy my final moments in peace would you?” Smiling as something wet slipped past my lips.

//Warning, Aetheric engine is suffering catastrophic failure…//

A red blipping text appear on the corner of my vision. Showing the holographic projection of my body. With my black hair and blue eyes wearing a white light-knight-like armor doing a T-pose. The chest area highlighted in red specifically the heart area.

“Embrace your death with honor… Aegis Arsenal” She spat the last word as her glare towards my face intensified. “Not with self pity… you are the reason me! Ares! The god of war to be on death’s door. That’s something to be proud of.”

“Thanks… that’s *gasp* the kindest a god *Cough* has ever said to me…” Waving my hand in dismissal I continues staring towards the storm. “Usually they are too busy *Cough* *Cough* Jerking themselves off *gasp* to congratulate me… just call me Dean Hunter… since all is equal in death and all that jazz.”

“A jester till the end huh? Hunter?” She asked as she fell next to me and groaned as she rolled to stare at the storm overhead.

“Do you think… there’s… there’s any hope of peace?” a pause “After we took down Olympus I meant…” a smirk slowly made its way to his face.

He does not get his reply, so he turned his head to stare at Ares, who have closed her eyes and peacefully slumbered. His smirk turns into a full-blown smile. “I think so too buddy… I think so too…”

Then his eye lid became heavy and he slowly closed his eyes… hoping when he opened them again, the world will be better.

Hey, a man can hope couldn’t he?

Hunter slowly opened his eyes.  Glancing at anything he can see and only seeing trees, and occasional bushes. While the sun glares at him from above like an angry lover. He groaned and sat up.

He rubbed his eyes with his gloved hands then he lazily scanned his perimeter. Trees, trees, trees, trees, sun, dirt. Then he groaned and lay back down.

“I got transported… I swear if this is the realm of some god hell bent on vengeance again I will ignore the few combat restriction we have and strangle them alive myself.” Then he remembered… that he got stabbed.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

He patted himself up to down and doesn’t see any injuries. Nor his armor. Or his weapon.

“Great… a kidnapping, judging from the forest around me… I guess a god with the domain of hunt? Or nature? Hope they aren’t the touchy feely tree types… I still have barks where barks aren’t supposed to be.” He shivered and stands up. “The one where I ran through the forest, hunted by a massive deer god is much more fun…”

“Ah… but first… Status”

A flicker of blue light passed through Hunter’s eyes like a scanning printer. Then a small transparent block appeared.

//Life support: Online (98%)//

//Matter converter: Repairing… (52%)//

//Armaments: Online (15%)//

//Hunter armory: (major content lost!) online (79%)//

“Okay, so life support is good that means I’m not dying anytime soon… Matter converter is a problem since I don’t have any weapon and I need it to process materials…” He looked around and picks up a big stick and wield it like a two handed sword. “I guess you should do…”

“Armament is in 15% effectivity and that means I can still whoop ass with personal combat enhancement… but unfortunately there’s no Royal Knights to help me… damn I miss those mechs…”

He double read the last line before cursing out anything even remotely divine. “It took me three months to replenish it in the middle of humanity’s capital! I’m fucked if I’m in the middle of nowhere!”

“Deep breath Hunter… deep breath…” Deep breath “That means I can start at a blank state… my unhealthy hoarding habit is getting ridiculous… said the other heroes… so I’m going to start new… and only picks up anything important…”

“Like this stick…”

“Or that shiny rock…”

“Okay… I need an intervention… but first I need to get moving…” He started walking west following the sun above.

//Hunter armory//

//’Echo’ Covert energy blaster rifle//

//’Smoke & mirror’ twin laser sub-machinegun//

//’Excalibur’ Anti-divine sword (repairing (1%))//

It was night when he finally stopped his walk. He sighed and stared at the sky. It’s peaceful here. Is this what peace is like? No weapon of mass destruction firing daily, or lunatic gods demanding sacrifice.

This… this is nice. He smiles as he took deep breath of the fresh chilly night air.

*BOOM*

A massive explosion could be seen in the distance, followed by the sound of gun fire. Then an alarm as light beam started shooting out to the sky, illuminating thousands of massive ravens encircling a village? Military emplacement?

“Of course… How could I forget…” He rolled his eyes and muttered “Status”

A blue sphere appeared and swallowed Hunter whole. For a few seconds nothing happened. Then the sphere vanished and in its place. Dean Hunter wearing a full body black armor that caused him to appear as a buff robot.

“This has to do…”

In the top right of his vision he could see a bar appear.

//Shield: ========== (100%)//

//Energy: ========== (100%)//

Okay… diverting energy to muscles…

His toned artificial muscle pulsed with red electricity before settling down.

//Energy: ==========(99%)//

He smiled before dashing towards the area.

//Energy: =========(84%)//

The village is burning as people tries desperately to run away. Mother carrying their children, the men grabbing makeshift weapons to fight against…

Green… things? I mean they are humanoid, but… ugly? Disgusting? I don’t know. They are taking the females while butchering and eating the males. In the middle of the warzone. So they might be savages.

Well… the village is definitely in danger here… and from the look of it they are the human one. The little green bastards could be a divine construct for all I know. Helping the defender it is.

Nothing new there.

“Recharging energy” I muttered and a pulse of blue lightning washed over me and I felt my strength dropped significantly.

Mentally selecting ‘smoke & mirror’, two lights appeared on my hand and when they vanished. Revealing two similar boxy one handed submachinegun.

“What are you?” One of the militia men asked.

Smiling under my helmet. I aimed my handgun forward. “Dean hunter... Aegis Arsenal.”
