Upon, leaving the Colosseum me and Baxter met up with my parents by the gate. My parents and his dad were looking at us as we approached, pride in their eyes and smiles on their faces. We were both slightly embarrassed this, Baxter whispered, “This is going to be embarrassing.” I couldn’t help nodding in agreement, after all, were both only children. It’s probably one of the reasons we get along so well. “I bet your dads feeling really good about your class,” I said enviously. “Probably, but your parents too, just look at them it’s clear to see how much they love you.”
“Hey kiddos!” Baxter’s dad calls out to us, extending a hand he gives us both a firm handshake before saying, “You’re men now, this is how men great one another.” My dad also gives us each a handshake. My mum however her arms around our shoulder and says, “No matter how old you get you’ll always be those two little boys that always snuck off into the neighbor’s farm to steal apples.” “Enough of that, let’s go get some food!” my dad chimes in saving us from this mushy situation.
At the restraint, a simple place that gives off a homely feel we tell our parents about our classes. Of course, everybody was interested in Baxter’s. Eagle Blade, a mid tier warrior class, Eagle blades are those gifted with a keen senses suitable for battle and are guides by an eagle totem, at high levels, it is said that people of this call are able to channel the powers of the totem into powerful attacks. My parents were pretty eager to hear the description of my class too but even I can see they are more curious about Baxter’s class. Looking down at my status screen I read out the description of my class.
Explorer
Explorers are those that love adventure, the thrill of traveling and discovering new places, learning about new cultures. Explorers chart out new lands and are destined to travel the globe in search of novelty and riches. The explorer class gives higher bonuses to agility and dexterity as well as some useful non-combat skills.
“That sounds really cool!” Baxter blurts out. “Not really I don’t get any cool abilities like your totem,” I say in a depleted voice, staring into my food. Well, its true Baxter is going to be strong he even has a chance of becoming a master warrior but me in contrast. Seeing my current state Baxter says sympathetically, “It’s not like you have to be an explorer you could always join the army and get some combat abilities that way.”
Hearing him say this cheers me up a little, he’s right it’s not like I’m restricted to my class like the old days I can pick it’s not like explorer is a bad class I could even become a spy for the country if I wanted. “You’re right, but I’ve heard its difficult levelling a job and a class at the same time.” His dad chimes in, “yes it’s not as quick as sticking to your class and you don’t get any abilities at level one either and you only get half the stats from leveling a job.” Quickly adding on as to not lower the mood further he says, “But you can have as many jobs as you want and you can get the abilities eventually so you have plenty of opportunities.” Even my parents tried to cheer me up, my dad almost shouting with emotion says, “it’s not like you need a class to learn skills or raise your stats, all you need is hard work!” They’re all right I should get my head in the game.
Once we were done eating we had to go back to the Colosseum to learn who we'll be training under and be assigned into groups, but before that we say goodbye to our parents who were practically in tears, especially our dads my mum was oddly calm in comparison not to say that she wasn’t sad but compared to those two she was much more composed. We waved goodbye as the mounted their carts and headed off into the distance.
Once we were back inside the Colosseum with the others, we were greeted by the sight of Dakkar stood at the furthest end of the Colosseum, facing us all 4 of his arms placed behind his back and a mountain of weapons behind him. Subconsciously we’ve formed into neat rows evenly spaced apart, eagerly awaiting his instructions.
Clearing his throat he says, “Good, now I’m sure you all know what’s going to happen now but for those of you who’ve been living under a rock I’ll explain.” Picking up a broadsword from the pile, pointing the tip towards us and oppressive energy pushing down on us, some of us even falling to the ground he continues, “for the next week I’m going to training all of you in basic combat techniques before the clans, churches, etcetera etcetera take their pick of you,” as though reading the minds of some of us he says, “you might be thinking why do I have to do this I’m only a farmer or as mages you don’t need to get your hands dirty, but your wrong most mages are killed because they can’t defend themselves up close and when war comes farmers are the first to die.” Letting his words sink into us he says, “you should all be grateful to have an opportunity to be trained personally by me, if it wasn’t for the king none of you would even be worthy of standing in the same room as me, now come and pick your weapons.”

I can feel my blood pumping as I walk towards the weapons his words reverberating through my head on repeat, especially the part about farmers being the first to die, it really worries me that if a war comes, what would happen to my family? I need to become stronger. Looking at Baxter I can see he has also steeled his resolve, I don’t know what he would do if his father died, he’s the only family he has left.
The commanding voice of Darrak sound out, “one piece of advice choose a weapon that you’re likely to have on hand.” After hearing what he said I saw an immediate difference in the others, a couple of them immediately dropped the weapons they were holding and picked up other weapons, if I tried I could probably guess what classes they have, mages with spears, blacksmiths with hammers, farmers with scythes and tridents or at least that’s my guess after all there’s nothing saying a mage cant own a sword. Looking at Baxter I notice he’s chosen a great sword.
It’s almost disconcerting how fast everyone has chosen their weapons as of now there are only three of us still choosing and typical of my luck the other two that are still choosing their weapons are the seer and the hero, I need to choose quickly, I can feel the contempt of the rest for just being here. I can’t rush this decision though, I don’t want to waste this opportunity on a weapon I don’t like and have to start training from scratch. Looking at the various weapons strew about me I decide on a rather plain looking buckler and a short sword, before re-joining the crowd that’s still looking at me with contempt.
New stat: Mental fortitude
Due to resisting mental pressures you have unlocked the stat mental fortitude.
Increased defense against mental pressure and attacks.
+5
Eh, you can get stats for that? Good to know I wonder what other stats are hidden.
Looking back at the two people that haven’t chosen their weapons yet, I see the hero picking up a large greatsword and shield turning towards us as though she isn’t even holding the sword and shield, both almost as large as she is, her auburn hair floating gently in the air, I can’t help but conjure images of her wearing dazzling Armor crushing hordes of bloodthirsty demons.
Taking my eyes off of her I see the seer pick up a thin double-edged sword without a guard and calmly re-join the rest of us I doubt anyone even noticed as all the attention was focused on the hero.
“Now that everyone has picked their weapons well begin.” Once again lifting his blade pressure pushing down on us Darrak says, “this is the aura of domination, for the next week you’ll all be training your weapons whilst the aura is active, now give me 10 laps!” he barks the final order. We all gawk at him, I can’t believe he expects us to do 10 laps especially with this pressure. “Well, what are you waiting for, RUN!”
It’s unclear who the first to fall was but during my third lap there were only 20 of us left and I can barely hold on, how were we supposed to do 10 laps? Even without the pressure, it’s too much, as I pass the bodies of my fellow trainee, I think to myself I can barely carry one I can feel my muscles pulsating soon I’m going to be joining them. I notice that it’s not just me who’s struggling Baxter looks beat too, out of all of us the hero looks the least exhausted even with the equipment she’s carrying but even she looks like she’s about to collapse.
Once the last person fell Dakkar said to us “you get 10 minutes to rest then were moving onto weapons practice.” Hearing this we all groaned collectively steeling ourselves for the oncoming training session.
