Chapter 34: Starting the Tide

Chapter 34: Starting the Tide

After a long night's rest, the tension from yesterday eased down quite a bit. Mira and Eve were still having their own thoughts to deal with.

Mira still thought about what she should do in the future. Despite Eve's advice about taking things one at a time, she still is trying to find something else that would relieve her guilt more.

Eve, on the other hand, still couldn't believe what Adam was planning on doing. Although she could've misinterpreted Mira's actions, the evidence backing her actions gave her enough of an idea of what it was.

While both were still preoccupied within their own little worlds, the sound of a horn echoing through the stronghold ordering everyone within to report for a rollcall.

Everyone showed up just in time, there were a few speculations on what this was about, whether it was the mysterious death of that person the day before or if it was regarding the ongoing war.

In the middle of a raised platform, Butch showed up geared in a luxurious looking armor and voiced himself out, "Today, we fight! Today, we will win! There are no more words that I need to say, just look at me and you'll understand!"

The shining white sheen on his breastplate armor and giant silvery ax reflected sunlight in all directions. People immediately understood what this meant, they were getting actual gear to fight back. Now instead of normal iron swords and worn down leather armor, they could finally use high-quality weapons and armor.

Butch uncovered the boxes behind him and showed multiple sets of armor and weapons at their disposal, immediately Butch started ordering people around to distribute these items among the army.

When everyone finally got enough gear, the surprise didn't end there. A few robed strangers appeared and disrupted their actions when Butch eased them down.

"There aren't just weapons here! There are even Tier 1 powerhouses here to help us! There's no way we are going to lose this time!"

When the people heard this insane declaration, everyone immediately jumped up in joy and was certain of their complete victory.

There were ten robed people walking in an orderly manner, some had wands, some had swords, spears, and other weapons at their disposal. Although their black robes prevented people from ascertaining their faces, it didn't at all conceal the weapons that they were holding.

Butch was enjoying this scene play out in front of him, everyone else in the stronghold had the same sentiments. Then came along Adam from out of nowhere.

Adam took out a piece of paper and handed it towards Butch.

"These past two days, I gathered intel on who to look out for and where they are holding their camps. I suggest flanking them from behind and taking their generals out immediately."

Butch took that piece of paper and scratched his chin then asked, "And how do you propose that?"

"Teleporting a few elites behind enemy lines, it's as simple as that."

"Ah, that completely slipped my mind. It's not like everyone has the ability to teleport like you. I understand, I'll gather some of my men that'll fit the job."

As Butch was about to go attend to when Adam interrupted him again, "Be sure to bring along disposable ones. Just a friendly tip." Butch widened his eyes then nodded, silently going towards another direction. As he was passing along Mira and Eve, his eyes stayed on Eve for a bit then disregarding her completely.

Adam went forward and greeted them both, "How are you both doing this fine morning?"

Still conflicted, Mira just said, "Just the usual..."

While Eve stayed completely silent in deep thought.

"Well, you are both going to be very key figures in this war. Get ready, because this is going to be quite the challenge for both of you."

Eve then returned back to her senses when she heard this, "What do you mean?"

"What do I mean? This is something I know both of you can do but is going to be really hard."

Adam took out a red cape with an intrinsic vine-like design all over it. Its bright red appearance was extremely eye-catching and completely visible in this dark landscape. He tossed it over to Eve to wear.

"Am I supposed to wear this?"

"You are, now for Mira, there's nothing that'll traumatize you in this task. All you need to do is follow a few simple steps."

Mira nodded while Eve started to ponder on the usage of this cape. Despite their month-long time together, she was still pondering on what was behind Adam's actions.

"Good now let's go alongside them. I have a deal to finish."

Mira wore the crimson cape while Mira just followed beside Adam. From another's perspective, an old woman wearing a red cape seemed to be an omen to what's to come. A young boy who seemed quite fragile following the unknown man who was changing the tides of war, it was an odd scene.

They walked for a bit until the landscape started to descend below where there was an extremely barren battlefield filled with rotten corpses and shattered weapons laid all around from both sides.

While reading that single piece of paper, Butch started muttering a few words, "Ten thousand forty-two soldiers, five generals, and one commander, the Underworld Envoy... Northeast of Mayna Hill... Gunt, Trait: Demolish..."

A single pat behind Butch's back brought him back from his dazed state. Looking back at Adam, he could only sigh, such accurate and detailed information was something that he couldn't even have dreamed to get his hands on.

Adam asked a question, "Do you have everyone you need?"

"Of course I do, when are we doing it?"

"At the peak of the battle when they are all paying attention to the battlefield and not around them, the perfect time to strike. Just get them ready at stand-by."

Butch nodded and gathered everyone and made them stand in a straight line, with their high-class weapons and shining armor, they had an oppressive aura around them making them look domineering.

From the far distance, there could be seen the enemy forces also raising their swords and bows at their enemies. Despite the distance between them, they both knew what they looked like from clashing all this time.

Butch heartily laughed out, his fighting spirit soared the moment he saw one person, "Oh? This time they are also going all out! Even their Underworld Envoy in at the front lines! This is going to be interesting, I always wanted to fight against him!"

"You were roughly equal to him a few months ago, if I had to choose who'll win I guess that Underworld Envoy will win. I'm sure you heard the rumors about him killing One."

"Bah! We were equal since I didn't have an actual weapon last time, this time I'll win!"

Butch had a fiery look as he shouted with all his might, "This is it! Everything ends today! Men, charge!"

Right after Butch's declaration, a horn was blown and an earth-shattering sound was produced signaling the start of the final day. Men and women from both sides started going at it at full speed. This was the day the dispute will finally end!

Amidst the sparks and blood of the battlefield, Adam finally ordered Mira and Eve what their tasks would be.

"Eve, let me clarify something, that cape on you is nothing special other than its durability. If anything that's a hindrance to what you can do."

"Just stop with it and tell me what you want me to do."

"Straight to the point, you're learning. See these faces?"

Adam brought out an illustration of two men and a single woman. These two men had robust faces and full of scars obviously battle-hardened warriors. The women on the other hand were even scarier looking than the other two, with her missing eye and slashed face, it was a living nightmare.

"These are three people who had the most kills in these past few days, I want you to bring me their heads."

"Simple enough."

"Without anyone knowing it was you who killed them."

Eve was casually taking in this order when she heard the last part, "Just how am I supposed to do that? This cape is already visible from across the battlefield, there's no possible way to do that!"

"I know you could do it. Either kill them so quickly that no one would've noticed or..."

Eve then lowered her head and started to gather mana all around her, "I understand." She then headed towards the battlefield in full view.

Adam then turned to Mira who was just standing there on the side. He took her and brought her to the same mountain peak that they had first gone to the very first day they arrived here.

"What are we doing here?"

"Practice for what's to come."

Mira slightly hesitated but knew it had to be done. She stood at the very edge of the cliff and started prepping herself up for what she was about to do. From when she first entered Adam's castle up to now she had never used her Trait to its full potential. This time she's forcing herself to use her Trait to suck the battlefield dry.

Adam could see Mira struggling to go through with this so he reassured her, "You aren't affecting people on our side other than Eve, there's no reason to hold back. You should be able to take the burden, and if all else fails, I am here."

Mira gritted her teeth and closed her eyes in fully activating her Trait. At the start, there could only be a small disturbance at the very least, with just a few people in tune with mana who could notice but that number started to increase very quickly.

Every wizard and magician on the battlefield had their spells' power wane each time they used it. They all wondered what happened but feeling the mana flow all around them go to a specific point, the edge of a cliff.

Eve was running through hordes of squads, her speed was enough to pass through every one of them but due to her bright crimson cape, they could still try to hit her. She was focusing on trying to evade them with all her might when she started to notice mana all around her immediately go against the flow of her own.

She didn't even need to look back since she knew what the cause of this was. As mana started to dissipate from her surroundings there was an odd sensation that came along with it. Despite mana starting to disappear around her she strangely felt free.

This freeing feeling was an odd sensation for her so she completely ignored it. She still kept trying to synchronize with her own alignment but was amazed to realize she could now ease into that state.

"With this, I can do it."

Meanwhile, above the cliff, in the high mountain, Mira was taking in small particles of mana all around the battlefield but when added together with the sheer scale of the war, was an enormous amount.

Adam saw the condensed form of mana gather all around her being forced into her own body, overfilling her own mana capacity in an instant. And after all this time, Mira finally felt the pain of having her own body be overflown with mana.

"There are two ways you can get rid of this mana, use it for crystallization or you can give it up to me. Choose however you like."

When Mira heard Adam's choices she wanted to immediately give it up but realized that this pain wouldn't go away if she gave it up right now. She gritted her teeth and tried to think back to how crystallization worked and started strengthing her weak points.

From her initial 24% completion, she started to work her way up, whilst bearing the pain. She started where she left off, the blood vessels at the end of her limbs. Despite that, the massive shapeless mana in front of her was still growing in size and was starting to be more than what she could handle.

Mira was starting to panic but there was still Adam by her side looking at how the process was progressing.

"Didn't I tell you? If there's a problem, I am here."

Adam placed her hand at Mira's back and every mana particle that was forcing themselves into her body suddenly stopped, to her it was akin to stopping a raging river by standing in front of it.

Seeing Mira baffled, Adam offered a few more words, "Just keep going, you are going to need more than this to even reach 30%."

Mira slightly nodded and started taking it one step at a time. Since the pain started to ease now, she could finally focus on the crystallization of her blood vessels. As time went on, her 24% completion finally increased to 28%.

"This should be a good starting point, now carry on. I have some other matters to attend to. The battle is starting to peak."
