BEGINNINGS

Kendra immediately noticed Nas' injuries as he tried to steal his breakfast from the kitchen and retreat into his room. She pressed for answers, but her son would give her none.

An angry and slightly frustrated Kendra called Victor who explained everything he knew, he was most terrified of an angry Kendra. She asked Victor to not come in that morning opting to take Nas to school herself, ignoring her son's protest.

An angry Nas pleaded that his mom would only cause more trouble for him. Kendra not minding the plea of her son to go home, went straight to the principal's office, Nas, a couple steps behind her.

At the office, they met the Ademolas seated opposite the principal, Mrs Ademola, a tiny woman, jumped at Nas, but she's blocked by Kendra who'd taken a position in front of her son, prompting Mrs Ademola to rethink her choice as the woman who stood before her was at a towering height of 6 foot and 2 inches, robust, and plenty fleshy, she looked like she could swallow Mrs Ademola whole.

Mr Ademola, with a head full of uneven grey hairs helped his wife back to her sit, and allowed Kendra have his sit besides his wife while he stood on the other side of his wife, one hand on her shoulder as if to help her calm her nerves. Mrs Ademola, unable to unleash her fury on Nas, resulted to cursing which greatly infuriated Kendra, and seemed to drain her husband of all energy.

The energy filled Mrs Ademola, in her shouting and jiration accused Nas of attacking their son, sending him to the hospital but Nas denied, speaking for the first time since he entered the office. Nasya confessed that it was their son, senior Ademola who attacked him in the back alley near the cinema, showing them his injuries. This revelation seemed to have hurt Kendra most, as she clicked her tongue, slapped her laps with both palms, shook her head before slightly raising her shoulder, all these she did while shaking her chubby legs. Maybe it was the pain that comes from not being able to protect her only child, maybe it's the frustration from the fact that this was the best she could do, complain to the school, anything else was outside her power, in other words, she was simply too powerless.

The Ademolas (mostly Mrs Ademola) swore that their son would never do such, "he's a good kid, he'd never even hurt a fly" Mrs Ademola claimed between sobs, according to her Nas had sent him to the hospital for no reason.

Kendra had grown tired of this play the Ademolas had presented before her, she had other things to do, she'd made her case, said her piece and would leave it in the hands of the school, not wanting to further prolong the issue, she announced to everyone in the room, eyes fixed directly on the principal,

"Erhen has been a subject of continued bullying in your institution and my patience has grown thin, knowing him, he would rather stay quiet about it and continue to suffer, but I cannot stand for that. I leave this case at your table Aurora" Kendra said, shocking the principal, forcing the previously nonchalant woman to sit up right, "how does she know that name" the principal thought

"Henceforth, for every child that comes after my own, I'll go after their parents, delivering 10 times the pain their kids inflicted on mine"

"Like mother like son" Mrs Ademola scoffed "the only thing the entire family is good for is violence and prostitution."

"Now my innocent baby is laying, brutally injured, in the hospital. It's all that stupid duds fault. I wish he'd just get ran over by a truck or something"

Kendra who was about leaving, one hand on the door knob, turned back, and walked towards Mrs Ademola, she took a bending position so as to reach Mrs Ademola's height, both hands placed on her waist, her face only a few inches away from Mrs Ademola's.

"Just as my son is not the the first child to be born without magic, nor is he going to be the last, so also is your son not the first to be hospitalized, nor will he be the last, so deal with it" Kendra said in a low voice as if to whisper to Mrs Ademola, a creepy smile plastered on her round face. "Or if you can't bare to see him like that, I don't mind sending you to join him, that is if you can bare loosing a few limbs" she added still smiling, slowly entering into a standing position.

The principal as if in a trance saw someone other than Kendra in Kendra's position, taking the exact same stance and having the exact same smile, a beautiful brown skinned woman, the same height as Kendra, she had thick finely combed afro, had a lean build and scars all over her body.

The sky outside had turned a pitch black and the room began to shake, and when Kendra opened her eyes, her smile slowly faded as the honey brown color of her eyes became more prominent as if glowing.

"Idia" the principal muttered still stuck in her trance.

The Ademola could not hide their fear, they'd frozen solid to their seats, sweats streaking down the side of their faces, Mr Ademola slowly turned his face towards the principal as if to ask her to beg Kendra.

"Quell your anger, OLOHI, even your son is terrified of you" the principal finally spoke, after letting herself a small chuckle.

Kendra took a long look at her and let's out a sigh, the principal seemed excited for some reason, and Kendra understood why.

"You're always so level headed" Kendra said scratching her head, the sky outside slowly going back to normal.

"I can't say I've always been level headed, I guess it comes with growing older and the loneliness that comes with it." The principal chuckled again, this time playing with her hair, brushing it with her fingers. "I'd advice you to go home and take a long relaxing shower to calm your nerves. I'll make sure to settle things with the Ademolas" the principal said as she turned to look at the still petrified Ademolas, while trying hard to hold in her laughter.

"Thank you Aurora" Kendra smiled and turned toward the door with Nas in tow.

Kendra turned to look at the Ademola before turning to face the principal, a smirk on her face

"I'll be taking my leave" Kendra told her and they shared a smile. "smell you around" she added as the shut the door behind her and her son, laughing whole heartedly.

"Remember to always keep your head down" the principal said looking at the door Kendra and Nas had just gone through, a hint of sadness in her eyes and in her voice.

"What was that all about? I thought you could no longer use your magic, and what did she mean by keep your head down, how do you know principal amara and since when was her name Aurora, and why don't you ever use your magic, everything I know about magic, you thought me even-though I could never use them.?" Nas asked

"Don't worry about it. You'll understand when the time comes" Kendra explained between laughter.

"You always say that. I know you've been hiding many things from me. Whenever I ask about my father you just say he died in an accident or say he left before I was born. I don't even know which lie to believe anymore"

"Just trust me, it'll all make sense soon enough" Kendra stated.

Nas is still very much shocked after what he'd witnessed, seeing his mom like that was a first for him, the mom he knew wasn't a mage but was rather a typical African(edo) woman who was always overbearing and curious about what he was and wasn't doing. She worked most days of the week but still found time to be with him, to teach him the basics of magic, help him polish his martial arts, teach him how to identify herbs and make potions. He knew she had many secrets but respected her enough to not ask about it, she'd leave the house most times for weeks and when she did come back, she'd be covered in bruises and injuries, all he could ever do was help her with herbs to create mixtures and medicine to help with the injuries, no questions asked.

Just before leaving the school, Kendra advised him on how to peacefully deal with people like the Ademolas and not let his anger get the best of him like she did. As soon she's disappeared from view, Nas went to class.

"Why's your face like that" Michael asked Nas who'd just come into view, pointing at his face that had been contoured from confusion.

"What did you do" Nas asked his friends who were all together "I know you were doing it to protect me but please stop, you're only making things worse, mom was just in school and to see the principal no less. So Please stop getting involved"

"So aunty was here?" Phoebe asked nonchalantly "I haven't seen her in a while. Maybe I'll go visit her this weekend"

"We were just looking out for you, like we always do" michael added expecting Nas to feel better.

"I don't need you to look out for me, I'm not a child. I don't need you guys to protect me, I can very well take care of my self" Nas retorted.

"mmm, actually you cant" Adrian bluntly added, his head still resting on his desk "if we were talking about non-sups, then that wouldn't be a problem, after all you're the best teen martial artist we know, so your skills are undeniable, but when you add a supernatural to the mix, it becomes a whole different story, it's hard for us not to get involved. I mean, even someone as weak as senior Ademola could beat you to a pulp whenever he feels like it and there's nothing you can do to defend yourself except take him to court. Senior Ademola is one thing, para venture you're able to defeat senior Ademola by some stroke of luck, what if you're attacked by a more powerful mage, say someone slightly above our level, or a mob of mages. Tell me, HOW WILL YOU DEFEND YOURSELF?" Adrian added, finally sitting up right, rocking his chair back and forth patiently waiting for Nas' answer.

"I don't know" Nas said, slightly bowing his head

"You need us even if you deny or resent it. It's an unbroken fact. The world is cruel and will without a second thought, eat you up and spit out your bones if you go out without a Rock solid support system. Just go with the flow, you'll get used to it at some point" phoebe said as he rubbed Nas' shoulder.

"In a world that it's inhabitants literally worship all things supernatural, what hope do you think a dud would have, no less one from a back water community like Igodo, known for its high crime rates and level of disorder and brutality. I mean, just think about it" Adrian added.

"Did you just call me a dud, Adrian " Nas retorted, anger in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, but it is what it is." Adrian shrugged as he got off from his sit, standing to face Nas, looking him directly in his eyes "I'm sure you've figured it out by now but you'll never awaken magic. I'm sorry but it's the hard truth. Like we all know, once above the age of 10, it is near impossible to awaken magic, only 3 out of 100 million are able to awaken after the age of 10 and that will only occur between the age of 10 and 12, and this happens by artificial means of rebooting dormant magic cells in the body and we all know you've done that, not once but thrice. You're 15, and at the age where it's IMPOSSIBLE. I'm really sorry to be the one to tell you this truth, but life's not always fair, and not everyone who deserves it's blessings are gifted with it" Adrian walked pass Nas who was shivering with anger and the team shot Adrian a deathly stare.

"Don't look at me, I can't have him doing this to himself. Hoping for something he'll never have, that's self torment and I won't sit by and let him suffer" adrian told them as he left the class, hands in his pocket, whistling away like nothing happened.

Nas opened his mouth to say something but the words would not make it passed his lips, just then the teacher walked into the class and ordered everyone to there seats.

A few minutes into the class and Nas excused himself and headed to the back of the school, still thinking about what adrian had told him, he punched the wall until he began to bleed, screaming and crying for he knew that everything Adrian had said was the truth, and he'd been deluding himself for such a long time, Adrian and dragged him to reality. He hated having to be protected by everyone, how much he hated being weak and having to worry his mother, how much he'd kept longing for something he knew in his heart of hearts, that he would never have and how foolish it was of him to keep hoping. He sat there on the cold floor, arms wrapped around his legs, crying. Phoebe is just around the corner watching Nas.

On their way home from school, Adrian apologized for the way he'd acted and spoke but Nas after his crying and self loathing session seemed to have come to an epiphany. He stated that Adrian was right. He, starting from that day, had given up hope of gaining magic, he'd look for something else to do. Though shocked and surprised by Nas' sudden change, Adrian and the rest of the group promised to support Nas in all his endeavors.

Immediately after stepping out of the school estate, the team found themselves in an open Field, with hills and tall trees, Adrian could hear the sounds of car tires screeching on the highway a couple kilometers from them.

"Welcome" a loud manly voice echoed "Welcome, oh heroes of tomorrow, welcome to the land of your death"

The kids shocked, turned to look at who had welcomed them in such a manner, only to see a metallic humanoid figure walking towards them in the distance.

"An E.A.F suit?" Peter asked

"An intellectual" they chorused
