Chapter 14: Aim for the head

Chapter 14: Aim for the head

There had been a number of reasons I had chosen to tactically retreat from my last encounter with the wyvern, the first and foremost being that I had almost run out of time with my ability. I wasn't arrogant enough to think my much weaker nine year old body could handle the monster.

I had yet to begin levelling my other special skills because Lizette had informed me time and time again that the foundation you build for your skills are important towards their future evolutions.

A stronger foundation would lead to more powerful evolved skills while a weaker one might not necessarily see a change in the ability level upon evolution. Thus, it was important to pick a suitable teacher or school to help guide and nourish the student from the beginning. class selection was also necessary, as it would indicate what direction you should aim towards upgrading your skills. For example, if you had a warrior class, close combat skills would be more crucial than for a mage type class.

Well, my supremacy skill was correlated to regaining my memories and not to building a solid foundation so it should be fine to level it.

Basically, what I was getting at was that I certainly couldn't defeat it with my current abilities without my EX skill. Class unlocking was extremely important to developing your basic stats and all EXP went to levelling your class level. I basically had the body of a nine year old kid without it or my EX skill.

Well let's not waste any more time.

Passing through the boundary line between the passageway and the cavern, like an alarm bell, The motion seemed to set off the Wyvern.

“RAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH” A draconic screech echoed through the cavern as the wyvern stood on its forelegs, its winged arms holding it up for support as its jagged mouth roared in my direction, spittle and an ice cold breath flying across the cavern.

It was a strange feeling, a monster a hundred times my size and body mass was roaring at me with the intent to kill. It's ice cold blue eyes should have sent shivers up my spine, yet I felt nothing. Only one intense desire welled up within my chest.

To subjugate it.

Suddenly moving towards me like a starved bull, the wyvern knocked down and destroyed any ice pillars in its path with ease. It's fast.

For a monster of its size it was surprisingly fast. I couldn't help but think it would be nice to be able to read its stats. Sadly my analysis level is still too low.

Soaring upwards with my wings, I easily dodged its sudden charge, the wyverns body clumsily smashing into the small passage, its body too large to squeeze through. Enraged, it quickly rotated its massive body and began to flap its wings, or arms? Its body lifting off the ground slowly as dust and ice scattered in its wake.

There was another reason I wanted to fight this wyvern as badly as I did. So far I had only fought weaker monsters and I was unsure of my current level of strength. Basically, I wanted to see how strong I currently was.

Spreading my wings open, I let loose a plethora of dagger-like feathers. Expecting the feathers to bounce off the wyverns thick armoured skin, what happened next surprised even me. While some feathers missed their mark, all of the feathers that hit the wyvern, pierced themselves deeply into its flesh.

“RAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH!!” letting out a screech of pain the wyvern seemed further enraged as it hastened its takeoff, its massive scaled body now flying towards my direction.

Hmm, that attack was far more effective than I had anticipated, almost as if the feathers were still piercing through the same goblin flesh from earlier. The wyverns scaled flesh almost non-existent to them. However, the wyvern is still breathing so it clearly wasn't fatal.

Ok, let's try this. The wyvern still enraged was now upon me. Swinging its long neck towards me, just as its massive jaws were just about to bite into me, I swiftly pushed upwards with my wings, completely dodging its assault. It was certainly fast for its size, but I was far faster.

Above the wyvern's head I sent more feathers piercing into its flesh, one feather digging snugly into its eye.

“RAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHH!!” Disoriented, and with me outside of its vision it hysterically swung its head around the cavern, letting loose an icy breath. I watched as the air itself seemed to freeze up and crystalize below me. An icy mist rising upwards through the cavern. My clothes were highly cold resistant and I also had halved the effects of its ice breath due to my wings of sovereignty passive.

Although it might still be bad to be directly hit with the breath, the rising mist was slightly chilly at best.

At the end of the day my strength and endurance were abysmally low, I was still a child without a class after all, even with the ten times increase from my passive I still only had the strength of an average adult human male at best.

“ACHOOO!!” Sneezing loudly, I rubbed my nose.

“Tsk, enough with the dying wails, just submit quietly.”

Gravitational Force. Spending a chunk of my mana, I used my void skill to control an overhead ice stalactite, its end pointed like a lance. Using this skill I could greatly accelerate or de accelerate an object. A haphazardly thrown dagger could move at the speed of an arrow and a flying arrow could be brought down to a sudden halt.

Sadly, I was still too weak to work on more than one object, it also used up rather large amounts of mana.

Breaking from the ceiling and suddenly moving at a blinding speed, before the wyvern could even react, like a thrown javelin, the Ice lance pierced through its head, passing through its crown and escaping down its large jaw, snapping its mouth shut. Further still, it brought the wyvern's body down through the air, its life extinguished and skewered it into the ground.

“Finally, some silence.”

[LEVEL UP - Sovereigns Rule[2nd]]

“Agghhh. Well, one or two level ups in my special skills should be forgivable. I don't have much time either, my mana is lower than I predicted” I whispered to myself.

My transformation was mana dependent and would last as long as I still had mana. Every minute in the form depleted a moderate amount of my manal. I could also only use the transformation once a day so I couldn't just stop using it to save mana unless I was within complete safety.

Dammit. The flight back home would cost me about five hundred mana, I couldn't afford to waste time or mana analysing the dead wyvern.

A standard adventurer would risk limbs for the parts as well, what a waste. Wyverns were classified as B rank monsters and generally needed a group of skilled B rank adventurers or a single A rank adventurer to defeat. Their teeth and scales could also make fine armour and weaponry if a skilled engraver were to craft them.

A shame, I wanted to test my ranked up analysis skill too. I couldn't use my analysis skill as it was also mana dependent. Either way I had a good estimation of the wyverns strength to my abilities anyways. Although more durable and strong, it was slower and lacked enough diversity in abilities to defeat me. You could blame its lack of intelligence for that. Well a wyverns fearsomeness was in their packed hunting anyways.

Well let's head out, best not waste any more time. I'll probably be cutting it close.

----------------------------------------

“Haaaaa, Haaaaaaa, Haaaaaaa” breathing heavily I ceaselessly pushed myself forward to cross the remaining distance across the mountainside, sweating profusely I felt like I was carrying boulders on my back with each movement of my wings. This was what happened when mana began to run low.

“Nearlyy, there” I shouted to myself, attempting to reinvigorate my stamina. The mansion was within my sight, literal moments away. Its castle-like exterior, a beautiful sight in the almost endless expanse of white. Its walls were constructed of weathered stone that appeared to have withstood the test of time, adding to its majestic allure.

I would enter through the back door, on the other side of the castle. It was far more discreet and an overall better choice than the majestic, large wooden doors at the front of the mansion. After being caught that one time just through the doors sound alone, I promised myself to never make that mistake again. Just thinking about my mothers reaction that day sent shivers down my spine.

That's when it happened. Just as I was about to pass over the castle's front gate, my mana seemed to just expire out of nowhere. I-Impossible, I should still have had enough mana to make it to the back!!

I didn't miscalculate things like this, running out of mana at such a time was dangerous, because–

The flickering of my hair colour and the disappearance of the small black crown on my head could only mean one thing. Flying down as fast as I could I tried to reduce the impact that was about to occur. Shimmering with its last bit of iridescent purple light, my hair returned to its natural black state and finally, my wings were no more.

“AH-AHHHHHHHHHH!”. Falling towards the ground, I let out a short scream before I soon attempted to gather myself. Calm down, there has to be something I can do. My hair blowing back haphazardly against the wind, I stretched out my body to increase the air resistance, attempting to slow down my descent. I had about ten seconds until impact.

Nobody from the house knew of my departure, so I had nobody to save me from my current crisis either. Quickly scanning the ground as I continued to fall, I looked for anything that could cushion my fall more than just the snow. My stats had all returned to before my transformation so falling into anything hard at this height would… I shuddered as I quickly threw the image from my mind.

Not like I would have had a much higher chance of survival with my upgraded stats either, even with the 50 percent physical damage reduction. Seven seconds until impact.

THERE! Walking in the snow towards the mansion was a person draped within a white cloak. His figure almost completely camouflaged within the snow, I had entirely missed him, only now barely noticing him as I drew closer to the ground… to my impact. I don't know who he was or what he was doing here, but he was my only hope. Five seconds until impact.

“HEEEEELP!” I screamed as loudly as I could, though thinking about it, shouldn't he have heard my scream earlier? He did look like he had always been around. Wonder what he was doing just walking around our mansion hidden like that. Two seconds until impact.

I'd read somewhere before that when a person came close to death, your life would flash brilliantly before your eyes. Strange, I was rather interested in experiencing that, perhaps I wasn't close enough to death yet. Still…

I wish my father had been around more. I couldn't help but feel some regrets begin to surface.

I found myself accepting my death as I fell slowly towards the ground.

Wait, slowly? “HUH!” The air seemed to stop rushing through my hair as I found myself falling down towards the snow at a far slower descent. No, I was no longer falling, I was almost ‘floating’ towards the ground.

As I tried to make sense of the situation through stretching my limbs I found that I could still move them as normal, but they felt much ‘lighter’. Almost weightless even.

Then, just as I was about to gently fall into the snow, whatever magic that had made me weighless just expired and I fell face first, heavily into the snow. “Ughhh!”.

Ow my nose. What a bastard, he couldn't even keep whatever spell he had up on for just one more second? Looking up he seemed to have completely ignored me, now walking back towards the mansion.

Well no matter, at the end of the day, he did save me. I owed him my life.

Now that I'm no longer falling towards my death, I think I have a good idea towards his identity too. Sadly even though I had just escaped death, a second attempt on my life would surely befall me if I couldn't come up with a plan to enter through the backdoor. Sadly, the mansion was positioned in a way where the left and right sides were blocked by high walls. So exiting through the front or back meant you could only return through said exit. The mansion was built almost like a gateway or fortress.

Quickly standing up, I trudged through the snow as quickly as I could as I made my way towards the man that I believe saved me. Since I was completely mana depleted, each step felt like I was exerting myself. Now behind him, I tugged at his cape from behind.

“you're my uncle, correct?” I asked him. Ignoring me he continued trudging through the snow, almost as if I didn't even exist. How rude.

“Well, I thought I should th-thank you for saving my life there. I did, in fact, not have that situation under control.” I continued without waiting for his response, he didn't seem the talkative type after all.

Still ignoring me, he continued on his path towards the mansion, now nearly at its large wooden doors. Well I did thank him, so…

Moving towards his side, I grabbed the back of his white cloak and yanked down on his hood. He seemed to still be completely ignoring me, but I wanted to see why. Did he see me as some insignificant bug? To be honest his earlier treatment of me as well as him ignoring me, left a bad taste in my mouth.

What revealed itself as I yanked down his hood, was a sight I had yet to completely forget. A femininely beautiful face with messy blood red hair and gold eyes similar to my fathers. His eyes still looked as empty as before, almost as if everything or anybody around him was nonexistent. He had aged well, in the last ten years, much taller now standing at nearly six feet, yet it looked like his feminine beauty had yet to diminish even in the slightest.

“What are you doing?” he said, still not even bothering to look my way. He continued walking forward, ignoring me. His voice was soft and quiet, almost like a whisper. Yet it sounded detached and cold like the surrounding snow, as if he wasn't speaking to anybody in particular.

“Walking you to the mansion, I saw you walking aimlessly and decided to guide you towards the house. You don't need the hood, it makes you look like an intruder.” I replied, this was my plan for when we entered the mansion through the front. It wasn't like I was lying either, I did technically meet him and decide to guide him towards the mansion.

“...” He replied with silence. Well, he didn't look like the type to rat on me anyways.
