Chapter 4 Sorrow

My theory was correct then. I returned to the exact moment my save point was set, now that I understand this power it's time to use it to the fullest!

Although getting in line could help events play out as they did last time I'd like to get some more information, I guess this life is just a throw-away, feels kind of weird that I'm condemning myself to die in the future, but, I have no fear after all.

"Hey, Pite, we're going up." Ozawa stood up along with the other students.

"Sorry about this, all I ask is that you don't try to stop me." I looked at down at the ground briefly, took a breath in, and ran.

Ozawa was visibly confused but I knew that he would understand in the long run, he see's potential in me, I need to show that I'm worth it. I weaved through the students who were walking up toward the stage, a lot of them were shouting at me to get back in line or asking where I was going, I realized something about crowds in this city, they really like asking questions. Eventually I got to the doors on the far left of the ceremony hall, there were two guards already standing there and I recognized them as the first ones who got to the kid to surround him.

"Sorry, I really have to get through!" I ran straight past the guards and shoved the doors open to burst my way through.

"Hey! Aren't you a student!?" They sounded too confused to try to do anything, it seems the best way to get around people at a moment's notice is to confuse them, noted.

After not long I found myself on the outside of the far wall to the ceremony hall, if I was correct this is where sorrow should show up. I'm a little nervous in reality, but I know it's cause there's people I need to save.

I know I'm not a guard yet, but I feel like It doesn't matter what stage in my journey I'm at if I try to help people. I'm ready to do this. In truth it took a bit of mental gymnastics to do something like this, going against societal customs is surprisingly hard when you're given a choice, But, I'm glad I did it anyways.

I patiently waited outside to wait for the kid to show up, I wasn't really paying attention to the time but from the moment my save point was set to when the kid showed up should be around ten minutes, which gives me plenty of time to observe on the second attempt. The streets and buildings surrounding the ceremony hall were very prestigious and clean, the rich like to flock around big structures, I'd seen it before plenty of times but it always baffles me at how much money is thrown around to make even the streets look nice. The position crouching in gave me full view of the main open areas leading up to the wall.

I scanned the streets for any children or shady things going on but to my dismay there was nothing of significance happening, It did seem like the kid was in very recent shock when he came busting through the wall so maybe the main catalyst of whatever making him sad was linked in mere moments of him coming through. If so, I shouldn't see him come through at all until the very start of the selections. If I am correct I would have been lined up by now on stage and the first few students would have already gone through their selection, which means in a bit the kid should be-

In a blur, something from above came flying into the ground next to the wall throwing dirt and rocks everywhere and almost hitting me in the face, I tried decerning what the sudden impact was caused by but there didn't seem to be anyone in the streets who could have caused it. I looked over and suddenly realized that what hit the ground at high speed wasn't a stray object launched at high speed or a magical impact, it was the kid.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

I watched in confusion as the kid stood up and looked around nervously.

"Where did they send me? Why did he have to leave, why did he have to leave!"

A white aura began flowing out of his body at an alarming rate and he reached a hand out in front of him yelling. In a bright flash, perfectly on time, the wall was burst open, the kid hugged his teddy bear and began walking forward as if he wasn't in control of where he was going anymore, he jumped up on top of the debris and walked in. I quickly left my hiding place and ran around to see what was going to happen in the ceremony hall, which I doubt would surprise me much.

Just like I thought, A voice echoed through the now silent hall, "I want my friend back!"

Chaos erupted through the entire hall in an instant, both students and audience members flooded to the doors on the far side of the hall and guards started to run toward the distressed glowing child. In my last life I just stood there not doing anything for quite a while, this time would be different, I would stop Sorrow from doing any harm to these people, the only one who needs to get hurt now, is me.

I rushed forward towards the gaping hole in the wall, jumping over the debris and making my way up to where the kid was now standing. I slowly reached a hand out and tapped him on head to get his attention, he swiveled toward me with anger in his eyes and I just looked toward him and smiled.

"It's going to be alright..." I spoke the words in almost a whisper, barely audible for anyone but him. He looked at me in surprise and then his expression quickly turned to pain.

"What do you know! You're just some evil adult like all the others... You don't really care about me, no one does..." His aura grew brighter and larger and the guards surrounding him were shouting at me to run away from him, but I chose not to. He began crying softly, he let go of his stuffed animal and it dropped to the floor without a sound.

"My name... is Sorrow." The boy said it quietly to himself but I was close enough to hear, he began repeating the same phrase over and over again.

My name is Sorrow... My name is Sorrow... My name is Sorrow. My name is Sorrow. He trailed off in his speech and then looked up towards me,

"You're the only one who cares aren't you?..."

His comment made me sick to my stomach.

"You're wrong, there are others who care." I spoke in a quivering tone, as if I didn't want to say what I did in the first place. The truth is, normally, no one would care, if he hadn't interrupted the ceremony I probably wouldn't have cared, most people, even parents, don't care about a child's pain, we see their outbursts of emotion as immature, but when someone older replicates the same behavior it's acceptable, most people never change from being children at heart, and they're too blind to try to change. Back in my past life I was impressed that even with the ability to lash out at all the people around him without any repercussions, he had self control that most people could only ever dream of having in a lifetime.

I need to change this world for the better, starting from here, but first, I have to change myself! I picked up Sorrow in my arms and began running in the opposite direction as the ceremony hall. If I could get him away from those people he wouldn't become as unstable as he was before, I need to stop it from happening, although the one in my arms was mostly Sorrow at this point, there was still some of the kid left in there, I could save him-

The floor suddenly splintered from under me and vines snapped up, jetting around my legs and wrapping themselves onto me. My momentum was stopped incredibly fast causing Sorrow to go falling out of my arms, I tried to catch him but the vines grabbed my arms and held me in place. Sorrow fell to the ground, clearly in panic. In such a short period of time I could see he already trusted me. That alone was pretty good news to me but it seems like things were about to get a lot worse than they were before. A woman's voice called down to us from above,

"Well well well, look who almost awakened, I'm surprised you still have some self control left, it truly is something desirable... We were hoping to let you rampage but that plan has been scrapped now, sadly, I have to kill you and your friend over there..."
