Embers

“Uhhh, is this on?” asked himself an old man staring at an old fashioned camera in front of him, it didn’t possess the fancy functions of modern-day ones like holograms, smell effects or things like that but that didn’t matter to him. The old man tapped the sides of the camera a couple of times and the lens adjusted themselves, he sighed and cleared his throat.

“My name is-“, a thunderous sound resounded outside interrupting him, but the man didn’t flinch, “it is expected that my name is still taboo even in this sealed space,” he straightened his clothes and cleared his throat again.

“My name doesn’t matter, but I like to believe that my investigation does”, he tapped in the air a few times and an orb dropped in his open palm, he broke it In half and a small blue fire came out of it, it floated in front of him and burned silently.

“This little guy is a soul, a gentle one, he was the previous owner of this shack", he opened a little rift with a flick of his fingers and tossed the soul inside. "Why i have his soul? it's because the topic of my research is reincarnation, transmigration more accurately, it always amazed me the possibility of transferring the knowledge, experiences, and even forcing reincarnation after a person dies, and guess what? It’s possible! You just ha-“, another thunderous sound resounded outside, and this time it flashed across a nearby window illuminating the otherwise dark little shack that the man was using to record the video.

“The heavens are watching me very closely this time”, a wry laugh came afterward and the man rubbed his face a couple of times before breathing deeply. “Even if I blocked off the system it would always find a way to spy on me”

“Moving on to important matters, I can’t say much about the process because the entire solar system would be erased from existence if I did, so I will say the results of my experiments”

“First of all, a complete soul with memories and experiences can’t be reincarnated through artificial means, in the travel from point A, the main body, to point B, the newborn body, the soul gets utterly erased from existence and every trace of that being ever existing in the first place” he snapped his fingers “gone, how do I know this? I have my means to resist the control from the higher beings, but even those at the Ultra-universal level will be affected without them noticing, truly a scary thing.”

“Then I tried with only sending memories, no souls involved, the same thing happened, every trace of its existence was gone too, it puzzled me greatly and discouraged me for a couple of decades, but my itch for knowledge didn’t let me be at peace those years, so I eventually got back to work.”

“Blank souls were the next in the line, no memories and no experience from the past, it worked at first, but three days later the newborn baby just exploded, with no reason at all, and if you’re asking, no, I made it sure that nothing could harm the baby in any way, a head-on collision with the energy from the self-destruction of a universal being would not even dent the formation I made to protect the baby, I’m very careful with my experiments after all. The soul ascended to the heavens and entered the normal cycle of reincarnation.”

“But giving up didn’t cross my mind after I saw it, I was getting there, I juuuust needed a little push and I’ll have a breakthrough”, he laughed and tapped the air a few times, a cup of an unknown beverage appeared in his hand and he sipped it.

“Then I thought of only sending information, general information that a gifted mind would know: physics, chemistry, combat arts, cultivation ones, some magic knowledge, mathematics, language…you know, basic things. It worked perfectly, but the baby died when it got that amount of information all at once.”

“I tried to “fragment” the information in packages that the subject would receive at fixed intervals of time, this time it lived for 14 years, 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, just before the subject turned 15 and the system would release the lock of evolution that usually breaks at that age.”

“Next was other species, animals, even some sentient plants were subjects but no, everything I tried failed, for 1000 years I repeated the same experiment over and over in everything I could, even automatons, but none worked.”

“After so many years I made a list of rules that no intelligent being can ever break or they will be erased from existence, I named them “taboo of creation.”

“First, no soul can get artificially reincarnated.”

“Second, no being can have memories from past lives, those that claim that they know about reincarnation and past lives are a bunch of fools.”

“Third, nobody can gain knowledge through artificial means, this puzzled me too because some people can transmit their knowledge through crystals or things like that, I was still researching the veracity of this one but you’ll know why I stopped in a bit.”

“Fourth, No artificial being can have a soul under any circumstance.”

“Lastly, any being that research into this topic will be erased from existence”

“Another question that you would be asking is how I managed to experiment so much without any consequence? That’s an easy answer, I got this”, he closed his eyes and a purple flame got out of his chest, it was covered with chains and had a lock in the center, after a couple of seconds it entered again. “I will not enter in details but this thing let me slip through some cracks that nobody else can, the price is that I can’t reincarnate or resurrect ever again and my soul will dissipate after death, even with the help of the all almighty system that loves us” he made a disgusted expression, coughed and returned to normal shortly after. “And my name became the sixth taboo, so yeah, I have two reasons to make this project succeed.”

Rumbling sounds started to sound constantly outside, there were lights of every color flashing from time to time through the window, the angry cries of millions of people, animals, and the names of techniques started to resonate through the shabby shack and a constant earthquake shook the land.

“I’ve been found, well, is not that it matter anyway” he waved his hands and the noise, rumblings, and the multicolor lights stopped, only silence remained, “better.”

“Finally, after so many years I succeeded in an unconventional place: Vangeilia, This planet has a connection with a very interesting plane named by the locals as “the void”, it has its system, rules, technology and don’t have any of the taboo that I described, only one universal rule: no being other than the inhabitants of this plane can stay here, not even I could defy that rule, I almost lost my life just trying to get away from the will of those heavens. It made me conclude that those heavens are more powerful than our heavens.”

“I repeated all the experiments using some special means like possession and reverse summoning to stay there for some time, credit to the now-extinct people of Vangeilia, Alas, the horrors that inhabit there are even stronger than me so I had to be cautious to the extreme. But that helped me draw my second conclusion: those heavens don’t care about who or what are the people there doing, its rule is so absolute that our heavens can’t even close the breach to there.”

“In the end, I succeeded, partially, no memories could get past the “screening” but a blank soul and some general knowledge…it was possible, it was feasible, but the amount of energy needed for someone of my level is truly off the charts, so I needed help…voluntarily or not.”

He stood up, pulsing purple energy was coming from his chest and a smile was drawn on his face. He made a couple of hand motions and the pulse stopped, a tiny crack appeared in front of him and the man laughed heartily, the fire appeared in front of him and entered the tiny crack before it was sealed again.

“Transmigration of a Beyonder, first and only test, begin.”

The shack turned into ash and the scene behind the old man could only be narrated in myths or legends: he was in a platform adrift in the space, there were not even a single pebble apart from the rocky platform of the world that the man described, a barrier with a diameter of one kilometer separated him from his enemies, every inch of space was filled with people, monsters, weapons, ships, mechs, titans, even some stars were present, the base level for the “ground troops” was at least Ultra-galactic, who had the power to threaten an entire galaxy, there were a lot of Lesser-universe, who could destroy multiple galaxies and some Universe level characters, who could even alter space and time limitedly. But the most prominent were the Ultra-universe ones, those who mastered space and time was meaningless to them:

But the most eye-catching one was a man radiating holy energy, every move he did was accompanied but mystical sounds and holy music, a snap of his fingers was enough to make Universal civilizations fall, and could create new life if he wished to do it, a being that could alter time, space and reality with almost no limitation.

“I see that you’re here Mike, and you didn’t hold back, the reward from the system must be quite big,” but he did not back down, he stood in front of certain death but his face didn’t express sadness, anger or grief, just a peaceful smile.

“How many eons have passed since someone called me by that name? Only you can remember that time my old friend” both laughed, destroying the oppressive atmosphere in the air, but nobody could say anything in front of those 2 beings without fear of being destroyed.

"Why are you doing this, friend?" the figure asked, but the old man just shrugged his shoulders.

"Peacefully watching how everything develops for millions of years isn't particularly appealing to me" he took a look at his sides and snickered, “I guess you were promised complete resurrection and more treasure in exchange for my life?”

“You know that the system wants you dead but a battle of this scale would make shiver even those ultra-universe kids, you need to...entice them with things.”

“But not everyone is here.”

“You play a part in that fear, you know it perfectly, not even In front of a certain victory will they move against you, those kids are still rightfully afraid of disappearing of this plane of existence.” ‘Mike’ shrugged his shoulders and breathed deeply, “Shall we start this dance?”

“Of course, old friend.”

Then, the camera turned off, cutting off from the most brutal battle in the history of the universe, but as it was promised by the system, only one person died that day, that nameless old man disappeared in a burst of laughs and screams in a language that only one individual at the scene could understand:

“I AM FREE!”
