A village beyond
The first suspicion

The first suspicion

(Ray Malvore)

I slowly regained consciousness before opening my eyes. All these thoughts came rushing through my mind “Where am I” and “What was I doing before I got here”. As my vision cleared up I became more aware of my surroundings. I had fallen unconscious underneath a tree outside of the village.

I was still lying on the ground when I heard footsteps approaching, it was Ken. “Oh, you're awake” Ken exclaimed as he set down a bowl of soup next to me. As I reached for the bowl of soup next to me I realized how much pain I was in. “You had a pretty rough fall, I would be worried if you were already healed,” Ken told me as he finished his bowl of soup.

“How did this happen?” I asked Ken in a concerned voice. “Well you agreed to help with my training if you remember”. “No, I don’t remember at all. The last thing I remember is walking out of class with you this morning” I explained as Ken made a confused look on his face. After wiping away the confused expression, Ken then explained the whole situation to me. It turns out I was helping Ken with his training of the earth spirit, since I have no spiritual callings I was using a spirit infused pendant that I had made a few weeks prior to block all of Ken’s attacks. According to Ken, about 20 minutes into the training my pendant deactivated and the attack was already launched before either of us realized. The conjured rocks made direct contact with my chest, sending me back into the tree hitting my head.

“I’m really sorry Ray, I was too slow to notice the faulty pendant.” Ken said with a sorry voice. “It’s not your fault, these pendants are still pretty new, I shouldn’t have trusted it so much.” I replied to Ken in an attempt to comfort him.

After my body felt healed enough to move, I attempted to stand. I was able to walk all though my legs were shaky and I could only take a few steps before collapsing or resting. Every time I collapsed Ken would catch me and wait until I was ready again.

Upon our arrival to the village we were greeted by my Mother and Ken’s family.

“We were worried sick about you two, it's been 6 hours since you left the village” I said in a worried voice to my son and his best friend Ken. I had noticed the cuts on Ray’s clothing as well as the wounds on his head and chest. “Oh my, what happened to you Ray?” I asked as tears formed in my eyes. Pointing to the pendant on his neck Ray explained what happened while Ken added any missing details. In a worry, Ken's Father said “We need to get you to the medical sector, and fast”. We all agree and carry Ray to the medical sector.

Our group arrived at the medical sector and immediately Ray was taken to an open bed to be treated. Ken explained the situation to the doctor as she began to work on Ray. “You guys can calm down, I’ll be okay” Ray reassured us. To my surprise the doctor agreed, although she wanted Ray to stay in the Medical sector until he was healthy enough to run with no pain. I backed away from the bed as I tried to calm myself. “Would you like me to go home and start preparing dinner?” I asked Ray, still worried about his health. “Yeah, that would be great, thanks mom.” Ray replied.

The doctor finished checking all my vitals and progressed the healing process through the life spirit. “Can you stay in bed for just one more hour?” The doctor asked me. “Yeah that’s fine, Thank you again” I said with a slight smile breaking through. As I put my head back on the pillow I heard Ken’s voice. “Do you want me to stay until you’re clear to leave?” Ken asked, still sounding worried. “No, you’ve done more than enough.” I reassured Ken that I will be okay.

My hour in the bed finished up and I felt completely fine. I didn’t feel weak anywhere and all my wounds seemed to have cleared up, thanks to the doctor's abilities in the life spirit. I arrived home to my mom having the table set and two full plates of vegetables, chicken, and a piece of bread to go with it. “You're walking just fine and your chest is healed, that couldn’t happen naturally.” My mom claimed with a questioned face. “She used the life spirit to speed up the healing process mom” I explained. “I was unable to sense any spirit callings in that doctor, why was she hiding it” my mom muttered under her breath. We sat in silence for a few moments while she thought about this. “Let’s eat” My mother said, breaking the silence. I obliged, sitting down and enjoying my meal. I looked up and my mom still seemed concerned about why the doctor would have been concealing her spirit calling. I didn’t understand why it was such a big deal but my mom was a Kodike in the past so I trusted her instincts.

The next morning had come and I was feeling back to 100%. I went downstairs to eat my breakfast, and I noticed my mom was still sleeping. Eating my food in silence I notice my mom coming down the hallway “Long night mom?” I asked in a slightly concerned tone. “I spent all night thinking about that doctor.” my mom explained. “Did she feel off to you?” I was asked. “Well we both know I can’t sense anything but she did seem a little quiet when it came to talking about her as a doctor.” My mom was giving me an intrigued look. “She healed you just fine and didn’t seem like she had the intentions of doing anything other than healing you back to 100%.” Still a little confused by her words, I agreed.

Heading to the school catching up with Ken along the way. We talked about yesterday and how everything has gone since then. Ken looked at me with a little concern on his face. “I also thought she was acting a bit strange to be healing you so well.” Looking back at Ken “Oh well, it's over already and I feel fine” I told Ken with a smile on my face. “You’re right, if she had bad intentions she would have already acted on them considering your vulnerability when we left.” As we got into the school we headed towards class like usual. I put forward minimal attention in spirit manipulation class considering I have no use learning it.

At the end of the school day I went back home and saw that my mom seemed thrilled. “What’s with the big smile?” I asked in a slightly sarcastic voice. “I think that doctor is from Ahiroy.” She stated with a lot of confidence. “That doesn’t explain why she is here as a doctor concealing her spirit level.” I added. “Yes, that doesn’t quite make sense yet but if I can find out if the Bastet is aware of her being here or not. I could finally reveal if she is just hiding it for her own comfort, or if there is something deeper.” My mom said acting like a detective. I still thought she was giving it a bit too much attention. All though this is the happiest I’ve seen her since my Dad left for a 3 year mission about 6 months ago.

I left to go study as my mom contacted the Bastet of Akriel, it would take a normal person months to get in contact with the Bastet. Due to my mom’s past and being married to the top Kodike in Akriel she can get in contact within a few hours.

“Ray, I have some news” My mother shouted from the bottom of the stairs. I close my homework and head to the kitchen where my mother was sitting. “I just got off the radio with Bastet and he said that in the past 2 years there was nobody from Ahiroy who was registered to live in Akriel.” I was a little surprised but quickly snapped out of it and asked “Well we don’t know how long she has been here.” I said while trying to remember all the times I went to the medical sector in the past 2 years. “We don’t, however the last person to come from Ahiroy was a male farmer in his 80’s. There hasn’t been a young female in over 15 years.” She added. “As much as I want to believe you mom, I think this could all be just a wild guess and you’re accusing an innocent doctor.
