Chapter 1 - In Which Lily Meets the Man of Her Dreams

Author's Note: This story is not for everyone, as it combines absurd humor with more serious matters like romance or adventure or the very grave nature of killing people and the repercussions thereof. Oh and more romance and adventure. If you thought the above sentence was funny you are going to love this story, by the way.

Lily was sprawled in the back seat of Jason's Dad's car. Jason was driving and talking with Chloe, his girlfriend, which meant nobody was paying any particular attention to Lily. And that was just as well, since she preferred to be allowed to text her best friend Zoey on the phone without disruptions. The conversation went something like this:

Lily: Help!

Zoey: What's up?

Lily: I'm on my way to the club with Chloe and Jason like I told you…

Lily: And I'm so nervous! I've never been to a club before.

Zoey: Well, do you want to stay single forever or what?

Lily: Of course not!

Zoey: Then you know bloody well that you should start going out to places.

Zoey: Be strong, my friend. I'm with you in spirit.

Lily smiled and put her phone back in her pocket as the car stopped in front of a squat building. Pink neon signs informed her that they had arrived at the Dancing Flamingo. Lily looked up, trying to search for the full moon – she was a bit of a nerd, and knew that it was supposed to shine tonight – but it was hidden by clouds.

"Well, Lily," said Chloe after they left the car, "are you excited to meet some guys?"

Lily wasn't sure whether she was excited or terrified, but she nodded absent-mindedly. She followed Chloe and Jason toward the club, and was surprised that the bouncer didn't ask for her ID card.

Inside, the music was loud, and lights were flashing. This place did not feel like a place Lily would enjoy very much. At least Chloe and Jason said that they'd be with her, so it can't be that bad.

"So, where are all the 'hot guys'?" she asked.

"Over here!" Chloe called out as she headed to the dance floor with her boyfriend, leaving Lily behind.

Lily sighed. Her friend should have known that she was socially insecure. What was the point of offering to accompany Lily if Chloe was going to abandon her immediately when they arrived?

Lily decided to head over to a quieter area with bean bag chairs and plopped down on one of them. She opened up her chat again with Zoey and sent her a new message:

Lily: Hey, I need your help.

And the response came quickly:

Zoey: What do you mean?

Lily: I'm at the club and I'm not sure what to do.

Lily: It's really noisy and I am not sure where Chloe and Jason went.

Zoey: What the heck?!

Zoey: You are in a club and you are texting me instead of dancing?!

Zoey: Are you out of your mind? Go dance NOW!!!

Before Lily could respond, she realized someone was standing next to her. "Hey, are you alright?" he asked.

Lily looked up. It was a tall, tan guy with black hair and blue eyes – a total hunk, by all accounts.

“Oh, yeah,” she said hurriedly, “I guess I’m fine.”

“This your first time in a club?” he asked gently.

“Yes,” Lily admitted, a little embarrassed.

“That’s fine,” the stranger said in a calm voice, “it was a bit awkward for me the first time, too. You’ll get used to it.”

Lily found herself smiling. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Luke,” he said with a big smile, “nice to meet you. And what’s your name?”

“Lily.”

Luke offered his hand for a shake, and Lily shook it cordially – though she felt that the whole situation was a bit funny. Shouldn’t he be using those silly pickup lines if he was hitting on her? That’s how they did it in the movies, anyway. Wait, was he even hitting on her?

Before she could contemplate this further, Luke gestured toward the dance floor. “Shall we?”

Unsure of what she was doing, but being thoroughly charmed by his manners and smooth courtship, Lily followed him to the dance floor. For a second she thought he was going to try and start waltzing around the dance floor, which would have been rather inappropriate for a night club, but no – as soon as they arrived at the dance floor, he started dancing wildly and energetically. Lily looked on for a few moments, and then decided to join him. And man, was it fun!

After a few minutes, when the song ended, Lily took a look around, trying to see if she could find Chloe and Jason. But they really were gone.

“What’s up?” asked Luke. “Aren’t you enjoying yourself?”

“No,” Lily answered, “I’m a lot of fun. But I’m just not sure where my friends are… no matter! Would you like to drink something?”

“Sure,” Luke grinned.

Lily had surprised herself with that offer, as she had never been much of a drinker, but she wasn’t going to let go of her newfound freedom and confidence this quickly. She went to the bar with Luke by her side and ordered two glasses of wine.

Lily downed her glass in one sip, while Luke was toying with his. Lily noticed he was constantly looking over his shoulder nervously.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Me?” he sounded surprised at her worry. “Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just…”

“What?” Lily demanded.

“Never mind that,” said Luke. “Let’s go back to the dance floor, shall we?”

Lily agreed, and Luke took her hand in his – this made her shiver slightly – pulling her back to the dance floor. When they arrived, Lily noticed – a bit too late – that the music had changed to a slow dance song, and to her surprise saw Luke grin devilishly as he put his arm gently around her waist. She froze for a second, but let him continue, and wrapped her own arm around his neck – that was how they did it in the movies, right?

In very short order, Lily and Luke were swaying back and forth to the sounds of music. Lily was impressed by Luke’s gentle yet authoritative lead – he was an excellent dance partner. But for some reason, he kept looking over his shoulder every so often. Beneath his mask of confidence, he was nervous… and it didn’t have anything to do with being in the presence of a woman, or with the dance.

“Is everything alright?” she finally asked as the song stopped. “Why are you so anxious?”

“I’m…” Luke hesitated, “I’m alright.”

“Are you sure?”

“Well, actually,” Luke said, “there’s one problem. I really enjoyed dancing with you tonight –“

“You call that a problem?” Lily was aghast.

“– but I have to leave town soon, so I’m not sure when I’ll be able to see you again.”

Lily wasn’t sure why, but that made her chest ache.

“But,” Luke added with a forced smile, “I can give you my phone number, we can stay in touch until I come back.”

Lily nodded, and took out her phone. “Yes, what’s your number?”

But Luke was not paying attention to her. His eyes were closed, and his hand was held to his chest, as if he was in pain.

“Luke?” she asked.

Before he could answer, Lily heard a scream coming from the other side of the room. She turned to look, and saw a group of people covered in white robes entering the club – this definitely felt like something from a movie.

“Well, well, well,” said the man in front. “What do we have here? It looks like there is a little wolf problem in the club.”

“Oh no,” Luke groaned.
