The approaching tide

“What do you mean, mother? Said Rheann “Is Rei going to war?”

For a second, her mother had a desperate expression, but she recovered quickly.

“How many times have I told you not to use nicknames? It’s unbecoming of a noblewoman” She paused for a second “And no, I will not allow them to take her”

Rei’s mind was a cacophony of plans on how to make the whole army explode. She thought about creating a fire tornado, but her runes wouldn’t last long enough to make it. She also thought about accumulating energy and releasing it as a massive explosion, but she didn’t have the right rune. She got so absorbed she didn’t even hear Rheann talking to her.

“Rei- I mean, Raelynn, are you listening to me?” Rheann said “what are you going to do?”

Mother, no, Reilynn Reia Largengarten stood tall and broke the standstill with a firm voice:

“As I said: no one is going anywhere. I will not allow it! They’ve already got your father in that endless war, I will not permit anyone else to be lost to it. While I stand, and by my authority, nobody will be taken!”

She then took a seat, and she seemed to deflate. She had never looked sadder.

Rei then spoke: “How long has this been going on, Mother?”

“Since your magic abilities started to manifest, a year ago” she said “they knew you were a rare talent. We must have some spies within the servants.”

“I will burn them all, mother, every single one, if they force me to go against my will” Rei said, determined “I don’t even mind if they serve our king”

Mother sighed. “That’s what I’m the most worried about. Come with me, both of you, I need to show you something”
