POV: Sammuel
It was almost ten years ago now, when I first discovered this incredible thing. A new type of energy, something that hasn’t been discovered ever in recent history. More than that, it’s an energy that can solve almost all of the problems in this world, and more.
I’ve decided to call it “mana” because it’s effects are unexplainable with even the most advanced of theoretical physics. It can seamlessly transition between any form of energy with zero energy waste, something thought impossible before. It it appears that it can absorb energy and release it in another form later.
On top of that, it leaves zero effect on its surroundings aside from the addition, or deduction of energy. That means that it leaves no effect on the environment. The only downside to speak of is the relative rarity of it, but it’s so powerful that’s hardly a problem.
I simply must harness this energy, it isn’t even a matter of saving this world that inches ever closer to its demise with every passing second. I will most likely be labeled some sort of traitor to my nation and imprisoned if I can’t complete this before the deadline set by King Jacob.
My king is a truly merciless man, a result of many years of governing a nation on the edge of collapse, no doubt. He cares not for anything that isn’t of use to him, and when I came forward with my discovery he set his eyes on me.
Since then I’ve made considerable progress but I have still yet to complete my task. after the ninth year had passed he set a deadline, if I can’t have this done by the end of the tenth, I’ll be finished. I simply must complete this before then, but I’m almost out of time.
I can’t even get help from others, after all, who could possibly help the great Dr. Sammuel, the greatest, most intelligent human to ever live.
When I first started my research, I separated the whole progress into three relatively simple steps:
1. Detect mana
2. See mana
3. control mana
With this as the basis for my work I set out to accomplish my goal. First, when I was first developing a mana sensor I discovered that mana is really a collection of particles. Well, it’s difficult to call them particles due to their relatively massive size, but I can’t think of a better word for them.
From there I decided on making a detector that could give me both the average number of mana particles per cubic meter in the general area, and the exact number of mana particles in any given object.
During my attempts, I discovered that there are actually different types of mana particles. Some mana particles are much better at absorbing and releasing thermal energy, while some are much better for kinetic energy. There seems to be a separate type of mana particles for each type of energy. Each type seems to always stay near a source of that type of energy. But even beyond that, there are some that don’t follow even the rules I thought were set.
There are some that move between space suddenly and abruptly, appearing to teleport, and there are even some that I can’t find any actual function for.
When I completed my mana detector I found a startling rarity of mana particles, which I later realized was a result of their size. I made my detector to give a number between zero and one million, but I never found a place with a concentration higher than one hundred, and I never found an object in the tens.

Once I had finished with the first step, it was time to develop a way to see mana. First I chose to make a screen that could show me the mana partials in the area, this is when I discovered how large mana particles are, they’re about one centimeter in height and width, with a spherical shape to them.
After that, I decided that to make it more convenient, I would condense this screen into the lenses of glasses that I could wear at any time, boy was that a mistake. Condensing this screen into glasses lenses took no less than three years, but on the bright side, it is far more convenient. And when I did that, it made it easier to distinguish the size, shape, and color of the particles. Each type seems to have its own color.
Then, that leaves only the third step, which I am currently trying to accomplish, the one that has taken the most amount of time, almost five years now. But I believe I’m very close to making it.
I understand mana, I know how it works, what it does, and the effects it has on the world around it. I just need to learn to control these things.
My most recent attempt has, fittingly enough, taken the form of a sort of wand. My idea is that it will draw in mana particles through the base, compress it inside, and release it as a particle that can be manipulated by the user at will.
It’s going well so far, I have been able to draw in mana, compress it, and purify it into a form that can manipulate any energy. The only part I am missing is the ability to control it when it’s been sent out. My plan is to connect the want to the glasses, and use the connection between the wand and the mana to manipulate it through the wand.
As I’m thinking of all of this I complete the final touches on my final attempt. I activate the wand, and attempt to manipulate the mana. I try to make it move where I want it to, and it works, I did it, almost ten years of hard work led to this moment.
“I DID IT! I FUCKING DID IT, I AM THE GREATEST MIND TO HAVE EVER GRACED THIS BEAUTIFUL PLANET WE CALL HOME!”
I can’t help but be extra tic at this, there has been so many failed attempts, so many setbacks that I lost count around halfway.
To test out my new invention, I attempt to make the room hotter by releasing thermal energy, it works. I then cool it down by absorbing thermal energy, it also works perfectly.
I can pull the moisture out of the air and cool it to seemingly generate water, I can cool it further to make ice. I can heat the air to blazing temperatures to create an invisible fire, and manipulate the light to make it visible. I can condense the mana into a ball of pure energy, and move it around at impossible speeds, making something capable of reducing even the toughest of steel walls, to mere scrap metal.
My wand works flawlessly and it can even replenish its own energy usage. I can charge any battery in an instant, and power the whole world forever with just this wand.
I use my mana sensor to see how many particular are in the sphere I’ve made, shockingly, there’s almost three hundred in just the sphere alone, and that is far from the best I could do if I were in a more mana rich area.
But just as I’m thinking of all the possibilities, I feel a strange sensation, as if I were being pulled away from this very plain of existence. I feel as though I am floating through an endless void, no sound, no light, I can’t even feel anything.
It feels as though this goes on for an eternity, but when I finally come to my senses I am no longer in my lab. I’m in what appears to be a far from modern village, in fact, their technology is so primitive it’s as if I’d traveled through time.
Though there is one thing to give me a clue as to what happened, strange creatures. There are strange creatures all throughout the area, there are humans yes, but there are also some animals that shouldn’t be able to exist.
There are lizards the size of horses dragging carriages behind them. There are dogs with fire running in their back, and birds with ice that floats around them.
This is definitely not my world, this is some other place entirely. Just as I understand that, I notice something else, the mana her is far beyond anything that I had found back in my old world. With my glasses I can see the particles, and there are simply so may of them. I activate my mana sensor and see that this place has an average mana count of over one thousand, far beyond anything I’d ever seen before.
This opens up a whole new dimension of possibilities, I was excited about what I could do in my old world, but in this one, I could do so much more. Just how much can I accomplish in this world with my self made magic? I simply can’t wait to find out.
