A Not So Standard Hero's Journey [Title Pending]
Chapter 1: The Heroes Summoned B

Chapter 1: The Heroes Summoned B

My name is Sarah O'Connor, and I was kidnapped from my world to another.

Now, to be clear, I was actually summoned here by a mage named Serina, at the behest of the royal family of Ysella. Apparently we were summoned to the country of Ysella, and are currently in the Castle Roa, in capital city Whake. As for the "We" part I had mentioned before, I didn't get whisked away alone. My brother had also been transported here with me. It was honestly lack luster in the way were brought here. You would expect some magical circles, bright lights, and meeting God, but we just opened our front door into a room filled with strangers.

When we summoned here, we were actually on our way to the airport to go visit our relatives in Ireland, so our luggage bags were conveniently summoned with us! Though it's not like any of it will help us out too much, our phones still work! Just, they have no service to our original world. So, basically, we have glorified cameras and palm-pilots. Lucky for us, as well, we had brought solar chargers with us, since we planned on hiking a lot with our family, so I guess they won't be dying any time soon?

Well anyways, none of that is actually important. Now what is important, is the current situation we have found ourselves in.

After finding ourselves in not our front porch, we were approached by a beautiful girl with golden-brown hair that flowed down to her waist. She had vibrant green eyes, and gave off a rather powerful aura, given her stature. As she approached us, she walked with so much purpose and authority, I felt we should have been kneeling in her presence, until.....she collapsed right before our eyes. What happened to all that swagger she had!?

As she fell, multiple others dressed similarly to her rushed over, helping her up to her feet again. During the commotion going on in front of us, another beautiful lady approached us, but this one had a different aura of grace and dignity that was more refined than the other girl.

"Hello, my name is Marcia V. Ysella, and I humbly ask that you forgive us for taking you from your home." The lady claiming to be the queen said, bowing deeply to us. "As for that rather...odd sight you witnessed, that was our Head of Court Mages, Magus Prima, Serina Legram. The reason behind her collapsing is due to mana fatigue, so please don't look so worried." She had said with a smile on her face. Can I just mention how lovely her smile was? I may not swing that way, but the sight of this woman was breath taking. Her title as queen really does match her looks, that's for damn sure.

"Oh, OK..." I had meekly replied.

"Now that's all fine and dandy, but can you explain what the fuck is going on here?" My brother had interjected, visibly displeased with our current situation.

"Jacob! She's the queen where we are now! If you hadn't noticed yet, but the door we came through is gone, and there are enough dudes with sharp items to start a battle royal here!" I understood his frustration, but I don't want to die with him because of it!

"No, Hero, Sir..Jacob, was it? Has full right to be upset with the events unfolding before him. So please, sit down and let me explain to the fullest of my ability." She had gestured to a table, tended to by what looked like a maid and butler.

"I guess there's not much point in refusing now, so we don't have much of a choice but to listen, now do we?" Realistically speaking, if the person who brought us here is out of commission for some reason, it's not like we can ask to go back, so we might as well listen to her.

"This better not be some kind of prank, or I swear i'm going to fuckin' kill someone..." After looking around and realizing our position, Jacob had begrudgingly decided to follow suite and listen.

As we were led to the table, I examined the room a bit. From the looks of it, they seemed to have lamps that had no wires connected to them. Maybe they were battery powered? Did they even have electricity here? Who knows. And the walls were rather bland, just made from bricks. Other than the table we were being led to, there honestly wasn't much going on in the room, like it was just extra space they had. As for the people in the room, the people I assumed to be guards all wore full-plated armor, and those I assumed were mages all wore vibrant white cloaks and robes, lined with a dark-red around the edges. Though I was examining those around me, they seemed to be just as curious about us. I could even hear some whispering about our rolling luggage bags, and asking about the designs or our clothing. I guess we're as much of an anomaly to them, as they are are to us.

As we reached the table, the two attendants went to pull out the queen's chair, but she had waved them off, instead opting to do it herself so they could tend to us first. For a queen, she seemed to be prostrating herself to us, when it should have been the other way around. Once we were seated, they poured us both what looked liked coffee, and placed a container of what seemed to be sugar. I know I seem skeptical of all these things, but after being transported to another world via magic, I think I'm allowed this skepticism.

"Do you drink coffee where you are from? We also have milk and sugar, if you would like." She had said, completely dismissing all of my skepticism. "We also have some baked goods. These are my favorite thing to eat with coffee." She moved a plate with, I'm now sure are probably what they seem to be, cookies of varied flavors.

"Thank you, Queen Marcia." I tried to be as polite as I could be.

"Thanks." My brother grumbled. I swear he's trying to get us killed not 10 minutes into all this.

We all fixed our drinks to our likings, and placed a few cookies on our own plates, when she had begun what seemed to be the whole reason we are here at all.

"Let me begin with a reintroduction, if you will. My name is Marcia V. Ysella, Queen of the Kingdom of Ysella, and holder of the Royal Bloodline. You could say that I hold more power over the king, and that only children who are born from me can inherit the throne." So it seemed that here, bloodlines meant more than actual rank, since practically speaking, a King held more power over a Queen. Things have already gotten overly complicated.

"Now then, let me also apologize profusely for taking you away from your home." She continued, bowing once more. "Now I do ask that you hold off on any questions until the end, since this will be a rather long explanation." And with that, we found ourselves listening to something that felt like forever.

For starters, first and foremost, el numero uno, there is no way to go back. We were, indeed, kidnapped with no way home. Needless to say, my brother became livid with this knowledge, but I somehow managed to reel him in so we could get on with this. The upside to all of this is that we have full freedom to roam and do as we please, within reason, at the castle, and will be given funds to use in the castle town, and anywhere else we may go, which will be explained later.

The reason we were summoned? Well, from what we could be told at the moment, apparently the political relationships between this country and the others of this continent aren't all sunshine and rainbows. Only 3 of the 6 countries that border this one are on at least neutral terms with them. Not only do they have rocky connections with the people who they should be getting along with, but the bigger issue is that an entire continent across the sea is hostile with everyone on this continent. And that continent would be the home of what are called demons and monsters, Kalfura. So what they needed was a Hero. And low and behold, they got two of them! Now normally speaking, you would only get one, but there have been accounts of as many as 4 people being summoned as Heroes. Not only that, but there is another way to get a Hero from this world itself, but they apparently had fruitless results, which is why they used this method. In fact, the Queen was very adamant about only using this as a last resort, because she knew what they were doing was morally horrid.

Here's where things get a little tricky, though. My brother may have a background in combat (he's an MMA fighter), but I myself haven't even thrown a punch at someone aggressively! How do they expect people like us to go to war and solve its country's problems? The answer is trainers. More like companions, really. We would be given a choice each of the 5 greatest warriors this country has to offer, The Fangs of the Kingdom. Each one has risen to their status on merit alone, and are extremely skilled in what they do. On that matter, the lady we saw collapse earlier, Serina, I believe her name was, is actually one of those five warriors. Though we were told summoning takes a lot from the summoner, seeing her faint like that doesn't lend much faith in their abilities.

Out of all the information given to us, the biggest bomb was dropped at the end. We didn't have to do this if we didn't want to.

Now, of course they would rather us help them, but the Queen herself had said that they took us from our family and friends, to fight for a country they have no patriotism for, for people they don't know, who stole their past freedom. So to try and make amends for not being able to send us back, she gave us the option to live quiet lives in the capital, with personal guards, and access to anything a noble can do. It honestly all sounded pretty nice, but...

"No, we'll help you out with this whole demon and war thing." My brother told her. Wait, what?

"Truly, Sir Jacob, you would risk your own life to help ours?" The Queen seemed as surprised as I was.

"I mean, staying at the castle would be boring, and my job had me fighting all the time anyways. Plus, I always wanted to join the army, but death was something I honestly worried about. With what you've told us, summoned Heroes always gain greater power that they cultivate, correct?"

"Yes, indeed. In fact, the power you can obtain would rival our 5 Fangs of the Kingdom easily. You would be on par with almost an entire army."

"So with that kind of power, I would hardly have to worry about injuring myself so long as I'm careful. So instead of wasting my life in a castle, I will fight for the people of not just this country, but this world." I never knew my brother could be so patriotic and courageous. But I don't share his straightforward thinking and ideology.

"And what about you, Lady Sarah? Will you join your brother on his journey?" She looked directly into my eyes, as if sensing my apprehension.

"Honestly, I'm not sure about all this yet...I understand your situation, but this is a lot to take in." I'm just a 19 year old girl who played music in a small band with my friends, and now I'm being asked to put my life on the line. This is a lot to take in.

"Sis, don't worry. If you don't want to, no one will think any less of you, especially me. I love you, and I would hate to think what could happen to you if I couldn't protect you." Even if he was willing to put his own life at risk, my brother would never want mine to be. He's honestly the best brother I could ever ask for.

"Indeed, Lady Sarah. No on here will think any less of you, less they deal with me and some divine retribution." The Queen had chimed in, with a rather nasty grin on her face.

"Can I ask for some time to think about it? Tomorrow? I don't want to waste too much time on it, so I will definitely give you an answer then." My answer will change the rest of my life, even more so than the current situation as is. This isn'y something I should be taking lightly.

"If that is what you wish for, then that is what will happen. By the dusk tomorrow, we will reconvene, where you can give me your answer. Sir Jacob, you think hard and well about this too, so you can both have no regrets about the choices you make."

"Yes, Queen Marcia." We both had replied.

"Oh please, when in a formal situation like these, please just call me Marcia. Though I may be the Queen of this country, it is I who am indebted to you, regardless of you answers." Even when telling us to break standard protocol, Marcia gave off the same majestic and authoritative aura she had from the very moment she approached us. Even if i gave her an answer that might not sit well with the rest of the country, I felt I could trust her almost as much as I trust my own brother. It was very reassuring.

After our discussion had come to a standstill, we waved goodbye to the Queen, and were escorted to the rooms we would be provided. The corridors of the castle were large, open spaces from wing-to-wing, where as inside the wings, they were about 5 meters high, with windowed walls to the outside. The whole feel was strange, like it was a mash-up of Victorian and Medieval architecture, blended together to make this castle. Most of the rooms we passed on the way to the living quarters were either storage rooms, or ones being used for various reasons. If i had to compare the sheer size of this castle, I would say it was similar to Kilkenny Castle in Ireland, if you added more castle to the courtyard.

After about 10 minutes of walking, we finally found ourselves at the rooms we were provided. Looking inside both of them, they were very similar, with artistic furniture, and a vanity in each room. The beds were actually smaller than

After about 10 minutes of walking, we finally found ourselves at the rooms we were provided. Looking inside both of them, they were very similar, with artistic furniture, and a vanity in each room. The beds were actually smaller than you would imagine, being just under the average queen-sized bed you would find.

"If there is anything you might need, please ring the bell outside your doors, and we will send someone over right away. As for a privy, just go down the corridor to the left, and it will be to your right." The maid who had led us here gave us a brief explanation of what we needed to know, and was on her way.

"Hey, Jacob, I'm going to bed early. If our phone's time is the same as here, it should be 7 P.M. now. I'll set my alarm for around 6 in the morning, and we can check things out then." I was too exhausted to try and stay awake any longer. Thinking about my situation right now wouldn't be very fruitful, anyways.

"Yeah, I feel you on that one. I wont set mine, and just wait for you to come get me. I wonder what kind of food they will serve for breakfast?" This boy here really is simple to understand sometimes.

"Yeah, G'Night, Bro, love you."

"Love you too, Sis"

And with that, we both went into our respective rooms, luggage in tow, and went to bed.

"Lady Sa....!"

Hmmmm...?

"Lady Sarah! Lady Sarah, please wake up!"

As I slowly opened my eyes, I could make out a few figures in my room. What the hell is going on so early?

After gaining focus in my vision, i could see there was a maid, as well as two soldiers with alarmed looks on their faces, right by my bed. After sitting there wondering what could be the problem, it finally clicked.

"Lady Sarah, there is an unidentified sound coming from your bed, and we must escort you and investigate the matter!" Said on of the soldiers, pointing towards the bed.

"Yes! As I was making my way towards the, um......lavatories, I had heard a strange sound coming from your room!" Continued the maid. "I tried knocking on your door, but you wouldn't answer, so I hurriedly made way to find some guards to help ensure your safety! Please, you must leave the room immediately!" She seemed so worried, I honestly felt bad about all of this. But alas, their worries were all to soon be baseless.

"Yeah, sorry about that guys. I totally forgot that you probably don't have these kinds of things here." For clarity, the sound that they heard was something akin to a warning alarm. Loud enough to be heard through the door, but also loud enough to wake me up. As I tried to alleviate their worries, I pulled my phone out from under my pillow, where I left it before I went to sleep last night.

As I unlocked my phone, the looks they gave me were everywhere from shocked, to relieved, to even curious as to what I was holding. After a few seconds, the sound stopped, and everyone seemed to calm down.

"Sorry about that, everyone. This is....hmmmm..." It was hard to find an accurate description of what a phone was, to people who don't even has basic electronics available to them. "This is kind of like a magic device from my world, but it's not actually magic? Think of it like a tool that almost everyone had in my world."

"A magic device that isn't magic? And everyone has one? What a peculiar device indeed." The maid said, her head cocked to the side, wondering what exactly the device could do.

"Well, if it's just something form your world, we're sorry for barging into your room so early in the morning, Lady Sarah. We will be on our way then!" The two soldiers saluted me, and briskly left the room to resume their patrol.

"I will go to the Queen and let her know you have awoken. Would you and your brother care to eat now? I can let the cooks know, so they can begin preparing for you all." Now that she mentioned it, I was pretty hungry already. Maybe because we went to bed without eating anything other than cookies?

"Yes, that should be fine. I will go wake my brother up, so please come get us when the Queen is ready to eat as well. Thank you for your consideration." I said with a smile to the maid. Though it was all a part of her job, I'm definitely not used to this kind of attention.

The maid bowed, and left the room. Now that everyone was out of the room, I decided to change from the PJ's to something suitable for going around outside in. I decided on some basic blue jeans, and an open-sleeved green dress. It was something like a tunic, but instead of being baggy, it was tighter around the torso/waist, and used cloth strings to close the chest area up, to make a tighter fit around the body, and it went down to about knee-level, with wind-breaker like cuts. This would probably look a little strange to someone from my world, but here, I think it might not catch too much attention.

After getting dressed, I went to my brother's room and started knocking on his door.

"Hey! Jacob! Wake up, you tub of lard!" I bellowed through his door.

"I'm already awake, Dumbass." He probably woke up when all the commotion was going on in my room.

"Well get ready for breakfast. One of the maids is going to wake the Queen, and come get us when all the preparations are done. I'm heading to the bathroom to freshen up, so be ready by the time I get back."

"Whatever."

Walking down the hallway towards the restrooms, many maids walked by, whispering about my clothes, and wondering what kind of person I was, being a Hero and all. And after taking some notice, I realized that not everyone here was traditionally human. Some people looked human, but had animal features as well. I even saw a few soldiers who had wings! Damn, I wish I could have some kind of cute animal characteristic. But I guess that's just a difference between worlds, that will no doubt be touched upon later.

Now here's the thing that's a little weird about the bathrooms here. They have faucets, showers, and toilets; but none of these things have handles. They have these strange circles to place your hands or feet at, but even when I do, nothing happens. The only thing that seems to work normally are the...toilets? They're more, holes in the ground than a traditional toilet. Inside the...hole, there is something like a flow of water that catches everything, and sends it away. For whatever reason, you can't smell anything from inside of it, thank God. But I guess that's enough of this weird restroom. Good thing I packed hand wipes and sanitizer.

After returning to my room and disinfecting my hands, I ventured over to my brother's room, whose door was already open. Inside his room was an unfamiliar man, wearing rather rugged looking clothes, like he was on his way to explore the countryside.

"Oh, hey Sis. This is Toal. He's apparently the First Prince of the the Royal Family, and he came to check us out, and bring us over to the dining area." Did he just casually explain away the prince of a country like it was nothing? Has he always been this nonchalant?

"Oh, hello there. You must be Lady Sarah, correct?" He asked with a rather charming smile. Now that I was getting a good look at his face, he had a boyish charm about him, and his naturally messy hair really suited the look.

"Yes, I am. So what's the First Prince of a country doing in such rustic looking clothing? Should the next head of state look like this?"

"Though you wouldn't be wrong to think someone of my stature should look more dignified, I'm not actually the next in line for the throne. My sister, First Princess Reina, is the next in line. I gave up the title so that I could manage the people on a more personal level. I was never really the bureaucratic type, anyways." He laughed at his own assessment, with the same charming smile he had on. Hearing that he was more of a people's man didn't seem too surprising either.

"Well it's good to hear that someone has the people first in their heart, before their position. In our world, you hardly find people like that."

"Well enough of all this talk now! Since you're here now Sarah, we should probably head over to the Queen." My brother had interjected. He was right, we should probably not leave a Queen waiting for too long.

With that, we both grabbed our phones and followed Toal to the dining area. Apparently, the royal family eats in a room directly connected to the cafeteria where the soldiers and maids eat. One reason was to save space and not needlessly make another area entirely away from the cafeteria, but also so they could mingle with them, and see how things are going from their mouths, rather than their superiors.

Here's to everything going well, I guess.
