Chapter 6 - Commerce

Chapter 6

Inside the city, the trio was already among all those tables and houses that formed a path with several vendors advertising their products.

Most of the vendors on the streets were selling fabrics and food, as well as some simpler materials such as wool and even wheat.

While walking through the fair, both Viktor and Alma were searching the surroundings for something while Nina was holding a small bag and looking inside.

“Answer me one thing.” Nina spoke and caught the attention of the two who looked back. “These materials as you say, what are they for exactly?”

“Their usefulness actually varies a lot and we don’t even know all the functions, but for example.” Alma stopped walking and turned to his sister saying. “Mister Matthew taught us that goblin ears are used to make specific potions, while animal fur and leather are more useful for making beautiful clothes and even armor.”

“But is it that easy to sell? Why do ears make potions? That doesn't even make sense...” She continued to stare at the bag.

“Everything has some magical affinity and at least it works with monsters, but not everything is obviously reusable, so we only collect the parts that we know are useful.” Alma gave a slight smile and crossed his arms.

“So that’s why they didn’t take that wolf’s meat?”

“Yeah, it’s useless and the taste is rubbish, it would just be heavy…”

Nina showed a suspicious and strange look as she wondered how they had come to that conclusion, but soon they heard Viktor call and they both turned to see him pointing to a counter full of potions and pieces of extended leather.

On it a bald man with a brown goatee announced vigorously.

“We have rabbit, deer and buffalo meat, 10 gold coins a piece, come, I have the best price and-”

"Hello?" The salesman was interrupted and looked curiously at the three who approached, in front of everyone was Viktor who waved questioningly. “Do you know where we can sell materials here?”

“Ah, tourists? Aren’t they a little too young?” He stared with doubt and turned his eyes to Nina, raising an eyebrow and as soon as he turned his eyes to Alma he continued to stare, remaining silent for a few seconds, but then speaking. “Whatever you sell, I can buy it, I just want you to know that it is priced for resale.”

“It’s a little disheartening to know that we’re going to receive much less than we should, but what can we do?” Viktor spoke with an awkward smile as he fumbled with a leather bag.

“Well, you adventurers end up moving the trade and whether we like it or not, we have our time here. But I promise to make a generous amount.” The salesman had a wide smile that made Alma stare in silence.

“15 goblin ears, 10 stone knives, 3 pieces of wolf hide and also 5 pieces of rabbit. How much can you bid on this?” Viktor positioned some leather bags with the materials, some that he already walked with and others that he had made on the way while hunting.

“Wow, they are quite material...” The salesman looked surprised.

After a long check and calculations, in the end the goblins' knives were worth almost nothing and all of them only guaranteed one coin. With all those materials, only the skin and the rabbits yielded 5 coins each.

In the end, 56 coins in a small bag was the result of all those sales, Viktor put the coins in his bag while Alma remained silent observing the surroundings, near the tables some people looked and commented, then looked away, but soon Nina gave a step forward questioning.

“Do you all buy anything and resell it among yourselves? Why?"

“I think it’s pretty simple.” Viktor stood up with the leather bag on his back and said. “These materials that are sold can be refined at least most of them, the wolf skin will be sold to someone who works with clothes to get a better price and the ears to someone who knows how to make potions, I think the prices are agreed, or I'm wrong?"

“I couldn’t be more right, I hope you don’t take us the wrong way, but it’s what we do to make some profit here. But don't worry, we negotiate fair prices, otherwise we would end up alienating adventurers like you, which is why the city is so busy. There are people who travel from far away to sell their materials here.” He spoke with a slight smile as he pointed to the adventurers who were passing by, there were younger ones and some older ones, all wearing flashy clothes that made Viktor look at him with a calm expression, but Alma continued to watch without saying anything.

“Well, if they buy anything, it doesn’t matter who I sell it to.” He moved his hand to the bag and took out a small leather bag saying. “There’s a piece of magical deer there. How much do you think it’s worth-”

“Magic meat?”

“Yes, that-”

As soon as Viktor pointed to a bag, the salesman quickly took it and opened it, staring closely with a wide smile on his face as he looked fascinated and said.

“Magic deer, yes…” The man’s smile widened even more with a surprised expression, again he looked at the trio and said. “These energetic animals are worth a good amount, there’s a bag here, so what do you say about 15 gold coins per piece?”

“Huh?” Viktor's brow furrowed along with Alma's who clicked his tongue. “You mean to tell me that a magical deer is only worth 3 times more than a rabbit?”

“Well, like I said, I gave you a good price and like I said, resale price. We can settle for up to 20 coins a piece, but I’ll have to see what you have to see if it’s worth it.”

The salesman's tone had completely changed and what had once seemed like a friendly smile was now wide and looking mischievous.

While listening to the seller, Alma continued to look around where the nearby sellers seemed to comment while hiding their mouths, showing expressions of contempt that made him frown, turning his eyes to the seller who remained smiling.

“No thanks, we already got what we wanted.” Viktor responded this time with a serious expression.

"Oh yes? What a shame." The man showed a disappointed look, but then threw the bag onto his wooden counter, showing a serious look at the boys as he said. “Get lost.”

“What if we refuse?” Viktor placed his hand under the hilt of his sword and the salesman laughed.

"Better for me." He concluded and before they could have noticed, the trio came two shadows behind them.

When they looked, Viktor and Alma saw two men, one short wearing a large hat that covered his eyes and wearing loose clothing, but the main thing was a smile on his face and a kind of string instrument on which there was a distorted face painted with colorful colors. blue and red ones keeping a chaotic smile.

The other was tall and strong, bald and wearing leather armor. In his right hand was a large machete and he had the fingers of his other hands holding an enraged look as he glared at the boys.

Viktor remained staring with his hand on the hilt of his sword while Alma frowned, staring at the two, seeming to focus.

"So how is it going to be?" The salesman spoke with a slight smile on his face. “If you want to go, leave the rest of the pieces. I’ll be nice and let you keep the coins, but you’d better hurry.”

Alma turned his eyes to the seller and Viktor remained staring at the bald man who returned the furious look.

However, a peaceful and excited voice emerged from the crowd and said:

“Come on, Henryk. Don’t do that, is this how you treat tourists in this city?” When they looked in the direction of the voice, the trio saw an elderly man who was bald and beardless, but with a truly friendly smile on his face. “Don’t treat these kids badly.”

“Stay away from this, Elioth. This has nothing to do with you.” The salesman again turned to the boys as he said. “If they disappear, they won’t get hurt.”

Alma turned his eyes to Viktor who was still staring, but this time his eyes shone slightly and a smile followed.

"Leave it there. We’ll figure it out later.” Viktor concluded by closing his eyes slightly.

“Right...” Alma raised an eyebrow in doubt, but soon saw Viktor's eyes open in a yellow glow that made him frown.

The two men continued to look at Elioth who saw how the boys would react, but the salesman smiled, placing both hands on the table, however, in a quick movement Viktor kicked back, hitting the table and throwing it upward towards the salesman, throwing it. everything that was in it up.

Everything happened in an instant and the bodyguards opened their eyes wide in surprise, however, Alma took advantage of the chance and quickly lowered himself, with a single turn he threw dirt into the eyes of the bodyguards who retreated and were momentarily blinded.

With the table still in the air, Viktor saw the bag falling and before it hit the ground, he immediately picked it up and started running, followed by Alma who held Nina's arm and pulled her to keep up with the run.

The trio fled and the bald man was still wiping his eyes, but soon the instrumentalist screamed.

"Behind them!"

Even with his eyes still watering and his vision blurred, the bald man started his run, followed by his partner while little by little the boys distanced themselves.

Behind was Elliot, who laughed quietly while Henryk tried to get out from under his own bench.
