Prologue

Torrential rain poured down from the sky onto an uninhabited mountain. Nearly every creature was hiding in their own shelters when the rumbling began. It started small. Unnoticeable compared to the rain pounding on the ground. But, the sound quickly grew until it was the storms turn to be drowned out. A landslide had started, and it was bringing the entire mountain with it. A veritable ocean of rock was flowing down the mountain filled with everything living there coming along with it. Trees flowed down still upright, like a flag announcing the landslides power. Deer unfortunate enough to be caught added their bleating to the unholy racket the landslide was already making. Water flowed harder and faster than any river. But, surprisingly, the most important item of all in this mix was a small gem.

It was the size of a small woman's knuckle, and its only color was a faint brown that left it transparent. The rock slide carried it from its peaceful resting place within the mountain and threw it into a violent mass of churning rock. Within this dangerous environment the jewel gained cracks and chips until no part of it was left untouched: even suffering a blow that threatened to shatter it entirely. At this point, the little gemstone finally got a bit of luck. On its next collision instead of adding a crack to its collection or shattering entirely the gem was lodged in a small tree until the landslide stopped. The stone recovered there, hidden from the world, until it was whole enough to fulfill its purpose once more.
