Working for big companies in modern cities is usually the same everywhere - long hours, routine and this feeling of being tired that wraps up your average day. On a bad day, you must add to the mix a feeling of frustration and even disappointment with the same question repeatedly popping up in your head - is this really what I want?
To truly enjoy this kind of life one must not only love the job but should also have no expectations for anything else.
Why? That’s simple - there are not enough hours in a day to spend time on other, more pleasurable activities. If working does not fulfill all your needs then you will always have a feeling that something is missing.
Each of your days will have the same, gray taste and route; working, eating, sleeping and a bit of time for those closest to you so you remain sane.
Unfortunately, most humans are like cockroaches, they simply endure and try to accommodate to the surrounding reality.
And life goes by. However, have you ever wonder what price needs to be paid for embracing such reality?
The scary part is that you do not pay the full price in one go. Knowing the full deal, you would probably never agree to the terms.
It is a long process that takes place every day. Just a tiny bit of your soul is lost every time with small things, a little sacrifice of your time and effort on something you do not care. Until you find yourself being steered by money, need for power, admiration or whatever other not right reason.
After enough time pass you no longer notice that things could be different, more splendid, you are too accustomed to how things work.
Then it is complete - you have become one with the reality that is not your own but created by society.
That was what Leshy Czernybor was thinking on his way home from work.
Leshy was in his early twenties, was of average height but quite well build. He had dark blond hair and eyes which color was hard to identify.
They were neither blue nor green but a bit of both. If you would care enough even after looking at them for a whole day you wouldn't be sure their color.
However, it was not something that you notice at first glance, or care more one you’ve seen it.
He had a little sister at 15 years old, still living with their parents in different cities about 170 kilometers away from the place he lived in. He deeply respected his parents and they used to call each other quite often.
He can be considered an ambitious person but he had always understood the importance of being idle (a fancy way to say he enjoyed doing pretty much nothing) so he found having to spend most of his time in office to be too unreasonable.
One can also say that Leshy was a victim of his own success. He could be fine with just going with the flow and accept the average doing but he wanted it all - success, money, and awe of those surrounding him. Of course, he wanted all of that by doing absolutely nothing or with minimum effort.
The thing is, that Leshy was smart enough to be successful with that philosophy. It has already been a while since he got promoted to lead role in the company he worked part-time while getting his diploma.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
That position meant more money which is obviously nice, but on the other hand, it was more work, heavier responsibilities and longer hours since being smart at this point was no longer enough.
That was quite the opposite of what Leshy truly wanted and when the week was as rough as this one there were more and more thoughts about changing something in life.
But how such a change is made? That would require even more effort to create something on your own, not to mention risks that if something goes wrong may end up losing what you currently have.
And what he currently had maybe does not make him a bath in joy but meets criteria of success in eyes of society - a w well paid (but hard!) job, a circle of good friends and his own apartment.
“Honey sweetheart, I’m home” Leshy said to his girlfriend. She was an amazing person, having both charms and smarts. Leshy constantly felt very lucky to have her.
She had a very innocent kind of beauty; with huge, blue eyes, white skin, slim figure and shadow of smile always hidden in the corner of her mouths. Unlike, Leshy she did not care about riches, but rather had this inner feeling of always knowing the balance and the proper way of doing things.
“Yeah, she is a much better person than me…” Leshy thought looking at Vanessa “Maybe a little bit more boring though. Now that I think about it her sense of humor is so much worse than mine…” reflected Leshy shamelessly as he entered the apartment and was putting off his hat.
“How was your day” asked Vanessa
“Well, I today was considering quitting job only 3 times, so you know, it was surprisingly decent” half-joking but with a little sigh said Leshy “just 20ty years more and I’ll have enough to retire, so I can become full-time nerd - play computer games, drink beer and read light novels. Such a beautiful life” there was a profound gleam in Leshy eyes when he said it trying to avoid the topic at the same time.
Vanessa rolled her eyes, thinking how childish her husband could be at times.
They prepared dinner, ate, talked and watched some favorite TV shows. Round 9 Pm Vanessa bid goodnight, kissed Leshy and went to bed. One can say, it was a standard, weekday afternoon.
“Thousands of years ago our ancestors probably had it tougher, fighting just to survive without much time for anything else. Maybe life was always a bit joy deprived? Well, at least ancestors had more fresh air excises. I wish I had more outdoor activities, they are fun. My office job is kind of slow death - bad body position and lack of physical efforts make whole body age faster and feel less healthy” thought Leshy.
“At least like my Slavic ancestors I can celebrate the end of day with some nice booze” said out loud Leshy while pouring, strong red wine. The drier and sourer the better. He could drink a whole bottle and not be drunk, just slightly amused.
After drinking and relaxing, he went to sleep and dreamed about some other places, places without desks, emails and customizable office chairs...
