Chapter 1: A Life Not Worth Living For

Joshua moved his hand slightly to the left, then to the right, over and over again. The melancholic life he lived was the exact same as the man to his side, and the man to his and so on. The same motions, the same loneliness, the same thoughts. "Just four more hours until break."

The sound of a bell rang throughout the quiet warehouse, the men in the line stood up, Joshua with no expression, and no sign of life, stood up with them, and made his way to the break room. As they all walked in a straight line, they made their way into the dimly lit room, where plates of food were laid out for them. Each man sat at a seat and began eating, Joshua took his fork and ate slowly. His eyes unfocused, only one thought raced through his mind. 'I want to die.'

As he was about to finish his last bite, a foot the size of a school bus, with green scales crashed through the roof killing the man sitting across from him, blood, guts, bones and debris all came hurling at him. Now covered in blood, his face and body scratched up, and a wooden table leg sticking out of his arm, he sat there, chewing his food.

As the foot lifted up, Joshua looked up through the now broken ceiling, only to see large monster-like beings. All of which were running past the building, as screaming could be heard all throughout the city.

"Hey! We need to get out of- Holy shit! Joshua? Are you okay?"

A man had swung open the door, his eyes peeled open. He grabbed his stomach after seeing the horrific scene and almost puked but regained his composure. He ran over to Joshua and began tending to his wounds, wiping the blood off of his face and neck.

"What the fuck is going on?"

Joshua with no sign of even acknowledging the man helping him, calmly stated.

"No idea."

"Josh, we should head to the basement as soon as you're able to move."

"Sure."

As he wiped as much blood off as he could, he pulled out Josh's seat. Helping him up, he ran over to the fridge and grabbed as much food as he could and placed it into a plastic bag. Josh looked around his surroundings. He took note of the gruesome scenethat unfolded in front of him and looked through the door that Mark had opened. Half of the building was caved in, people were running for their lives, and the sounds of thunder like chaos could be heard throughout the warehouse.

Out of nowhere a gust of wind had zoomed past the two men, causing Josh to be swung into the wall behind him, on the other hand, the man was slammed head first into the fridge, killing him instantly. As Josh regained consciousness, he realized the entire building was split in half, but only less then a millimeter thick. It was almost unnoticeable, but he could tell do the fact that objects on the floor had a thin slice in all of them causing them to separate.

Sitting there, he looked to the now lifeless corpse, noticing he was still gripping the plastic bag which contained the food. Josh standing up, walked over to the man and leaned over him.

"Sorry Mark."

Picking up the bag, he headed out the door only to be met with the sound of something rummaging behind him. Looking behind, back into the room, his eyes focused intently. Marks body had begun standing up. Watching in horror, his body froze, the mangled corpse of his manager was now slowly approaching him. Josh slammed the door closed, his heart beating fast, he turned around to make a break for it down the hall.

The body's of his coworkers were bloody and shredded to pieces, some missing arms, legs, heads even holes the size of basketballs in their chests and stomachs. This gruesome scene wouldn't be that grotesque if they weren't all starting to stand up and make their way towards him.

"Hey don't just stand there you dumbass, run!"

A woman's voice called from the right of him. Josh dashed towards her, she was calling out from the woman's bathroom, he could see two other people in there with her, both had their hands covering their ears. As Josh made his way to the door the woman grabbed him by the shirt and tossed him inside, pushing two trashcans in front of the door.

"Fuck, you look as useless as the other two."

The woman standing above him was around five foot seven, and had a well built physique. It contrasted Josh's, he was the same height, but his slim, ghoulish like features stood out, his bones putrided as though their was no muscle to him. His eye sockets were sunk in and his cheek bones made it seem as though he hadn't eaten in months, while his pale like skin made him look like some type of cancer patient.

"My name's Leah, the man crying over there is micheal, that girl over there hasnt spoken a word, what's your's?"

"Josh."

The woman sat down beside him, and picked up the bag that he had dropped. She pulled out two protein bars and four water bottles. She walked over to the two people sitting beside each other and handed them water's and each half of a bar. After making her way back to Josh she broke off three fourths of her and handed it to Josh.

"You look like you'll drop dead any minute, eat it."

She said with a slight smile, but her kind gesture was interrupted by the scratched and pounding come from the door.

"Thanks."

Grabbing a pocket knife she had in her pocket, she ripped half of jeans pant leg off. She looked at Josh and placed her hand on the table leg still peircing his arm.

"I used to be a med student, and what I can tell you is, your arm is done for unless you can get to a hospital, the only thing I can do is help it not get any worse for now."

"Do what you want."

The woman started off by slowly cutting away at the leg, she made the two sides shorter, so that it wouldn't be caught or hit anything. Then took her pant leg and wrapped it around to stop any bleeding and, and used the rest to make a makeshift splint.

"You didn't even flinch, most people would be screaming in pain."

"It doesn't really bother me."

Josh said coldly, although he didn't show it, the amount of blood loss was slowly catching up to him. The adrenaline which was keeping him going was wearing off and now a cold like feeling was washing over him.

"You know, I'm kinda-"

The woman was cut off, her chest began to pound and needle like stabbing was piercing her chest. Looking up, she tried to grab the hand of Josh, but just her he and the other two people were all clutching their chests out of agony. Josh grabbed his chest, it felt like something was moving in it, the pain was unlike anything he had felt before. Yet just like how it started, it ended.

*System Loaded*

A blue screen appeared in front of him, it read those words in a transparent like box in blue colors. Looking over to the rest of them, they were all looking in different directions, though he couldn't see what they were looking at.

*Congratulations on surviving! As a reward for your courageous efforts all wounds shall be healed!*

An angelic voice uttered almost gleefully.

The pain in Josh's arm had disappeared, he began peeling off the bandages to reveal no wound, not even a scar.

*Would you like to be transported to the tutorial world? You'll gain rewards, skills, level ups, and so much more! Once you are finished and complete the tutorial you'll be summoned back to your original world! Then you can take on all the scary monsters!*

Josh looked over to the others, only to see that one had disappeared, and as one of them said "yes" their body had disappeared without a trace. Leah was still there however and seemed to be talking to the system, he couldn't hear a word she spoken, even though she was right beside him.

*Now just say yes or no!*

"What happens if I don't answer?"

Josh asked not expecting an answer.

*Huh?! Well I'll dissappear and your option to go to the tutorial will be nullified!*

"What happens if it's nullified?"

*The chances of you surviving is 0.0001%*

Josh was tempted to go, but he couldn't help but be skeptical, if it wasn't this system that caused this destruction then what was it? How does he know this isn't a trap? What if this system is using him? As he was lost in thought, Leah had now disappeared to, leaving just him, alone, the sound of scratching and banging, roars, thunder, noises which could not be explained, and a message box in front of him. To say he was not in the right state of mind would be an understatement.

*So what will you choose?*

Josh pulled out a penny from his pocket.

"Heads I go, tails I stay."

*What?!?! You're going to leave not only the fate of your life but the possibility to gain enormous strength and power, up to a coin toss?*

"Yeah."

Josh flipped the coin, it went above his head and hit the floor, it rolled and wall, landing on tails.

"My answers no."

*You're fucking crazy!*

*System deactivating*

*Before I leave, take this. You'll need it.*

*You have gained [map]*

*System deactivated*

The system faded out, but now when he focused he could see a square box that was in the top right of his vision. It had a green dot, and many, many red dots all around it. There was also a blue arrow, it was off of the map but it seemed to be pointing north-east, it read '1.03 km.' Standing up Josh walked as far as he could to the north-east side of the room, now the blue mark was visible, not only that it turned into a blue square marked 'safe zone.' Josh made out two things, first the map was 1km by 1km wide and that the green dot was him.

"Well I dont got anything better to do, so I'll make my way to the safe zone."

Josh picked up the plastic bag filled with food and water, and made his way over to the door. Moving the trashcans out of the way, he placed his hand on the handle and slowly began opening the door. Bracing himself he swung it open, and he was face to face with a headless corpse.

"Shit."
