Chapter 9: Confusion

Chapter 9: Confusion

Suddenly the sand below me gave way and I began to drop, into what seemed to be a never ending pit. It became darker the further down I went. Just then with a jolt I stopped for a second and then I was sucked upwards.

When I got to the surface the wind was blowing so hard that I could not see behind my hair, although the wind was blowing the sand as well so I guess it was good that my hair was blocking the way. In confusion I took a step forward and heard a swoosh sound behind me. A sense of familiarity passed over me and then Leo appeared in front of me.

Pulling the weapon bag over his shoulder Leo said, “Do you have everything? I don’t want to come back here if you forgot something.”

In shock I looked him up and down to make sure that he was real. When I could find the words I asked, “Didn’t we just do this?”

“Do what?”

“This conversation. About the having enough weapons to fight the beast.”

“Are you feeling alright Adisson? We don’t have to do this if you’re not feeling well.”

“No I’m alright. Let’s go.”

“Okay” said Leo. He looked up at the bright sky and said, “We have to go this way” as he pointed behind us.

With a sign I said, “Let me guess, its because the wind blows the opposite way of the beast.”

With a surprised look Leo said, “Actually yeah. How did you know that?”

Trying to come up with a realistic lie I finally just said, “You told me during my training.”

“Did I?”

“Yep!”

Leo shrugged his shoulders and said, “I guess I did.” He didn’t say anything else, he just began walking and I was forced to follow him. When I walked next to him I could see the same determination in his eyes that he had before, and I knew that something bad was about to happen.

“Hey Leo.”

“Shhh” he said holding up his hand.

“Uh-oh it’s about to happen” I quietly said to myself.

“Did you say something?”

“Nope.” I cautiously took a step forward and I made it about three steps away from Leo when he came running at me and knocked me over chest first. In a sense of confusion, I just let Leo stay on top of me in order to see what would happen if I didn’t stand up.

Leo rolled off of me and said, “I thought I heard something. Sorry.” He went to go stand up but I pulled him back to the ground by the back of his shirt. When his butt hit the ground Leo said, “What did you do that for?”

I put my head down and said, “I just have a feeling that something bad is going to happen.”

“I think you need more sleep if you’re this paranoid.” Leo stood up and held his hand out to me and said, “Common. If we don’t continue Sam and my wife don’t have a chance against the beast.”

I looked around us but I couldn’t see anything, so I grabbed Leo’s hand and stood up. However, I was flown back into a big sand hill and slid down it on my back again. In frustration I didn’t bother saying on my back and I got up as soon as I could and began to run towards where Leo was.

Just like before, the sun was so hot that I felt my back burning under my shirt and the sand felt heavy under my feet; I even sank in various spots. It took a great deal of effort to make it back to where Leo had been, but once again he was gone and all that was left behind was his weapons bag under a layer of sand. I took a few steps forward and dropped the weapons bag; just as I had done before. I took a few more steps then turned around and walked back to where I found the bag. I squatted down and once again I found Leo’s shoe. I picked it up and started to look at it, to see if it would give me any clue as to where Leo was going, or what took him. Nevertheless, before I could get a good look at it the sand below me gave way and I began to sink into it again.

I bent down and covered my ears as I yelled, “NOOOOOO!!! LEO WHERE ARE YOU??!!”

I was yelling so loud that I barely heard the voice behind me. It wasn’t until I felt someone touching my shoulder from behind me that made me stop yelling. Being startled I jumped a bit before I turned around to see who it was behind me. I said, “Leo I am so happy that you are alright” while hugging him as tight as I could.

“Of course I’m alright. Why wouldn’t I be?”

I let go of him and said, “Because of the thing that took you away.”

He placed the back of his hand on the back of my hand and said, “I don’t know what you are talking about, but here why don’t you lay down.” He took my hand and lead me to a small couch, inside our hide out; it was as if we never went outside.
