Chapter 2- Theories

"Using the Chain rule, we can get the differential of the function..."

The voice of the Maths teacher went on trying and failing to penetrate the fog of confusion and boredom clouding the brain of the students. It wasn't his fault. Not totally. The person who decided to put Calculus on the timetable on a Monday morning was the true cause.

"Sir, could you solve this using the first principle?" came the voice of Aaron from beside me.

He was tall, lean and handsome with full hair cut in any style he felt like cutting it, which was an afro today. He was the representation of 'cool kid'. Outwardly at least. As for his personality, I think he'd win the nerdiest nerd award if there was one.(and no, the one Sophie and I set up didn't count, sadly). I honestly don't know why he keeps asking these questions when he probably knows it more than the teacher. He's like a real life version of Artemis Fowl. While I considered myself smart, compared to him, I was an ignoramus.

The familiar ringing of the bell signifying the end of the class and the start of break broke from my musings.

"Hey Sam. I think I'm finally getting a lead on how you got your powers", Aaron whispered.

"No need to make it seem like we're talking about something secret, Aaron. Just talk a little lower than normal without whispering. So what you got?"

"Remember what I told you about black holes warping spacetime?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I did some calculations and found out you displace gravity a little. Remember you said you've always felt others like you? Well I calculated the displacement relative to time and found a very small shift in time. Just by one-trillionth of a nano second. After that, I pinpointed the location for six other displacements which would combine to shift the spacetime continuum. Its a very minute change really. You won't notice if you're not watching for it. And you won't believe what I found."

"What did you find?" I asked curiously.

"I was able to pinpoint six different locations. Wales, Canada, Israel, Brazil, New Zealand and strangely enough, there's one in a small settlement in Antarctica."

"You're being very unspecific right now, they could be any where in those countries."

"Yes but can't you see the connection? Counting you, there's one in every continent in the world. Whatever caused this is either only capable of affecting one person within a given geographical area or it was done on purpose."

"That's true. We could still be wrong an its just coincidence. Have you made any progress with the knowledge input device thingy? You were confident about its potential."

"Ah yes. I received divine inspiration in the form of Elon Musk recently. His neuralink project convinced me that I could convert knowledge to signals that the brain can understand. I'd need to get a full scope of your abilities though. It will help the algorithm decide the best techniques to teach you. You are strong but utterly unskilled. My grandma can fight better than you."

"Your grandma also knows more martial arts than batman so she fights better than pretty much anyone. What happened to the other algorithm you where working on again?"

"Oh I sold it for a few million dollars."

"Yep. And I'm totally broke. Remind me why you're still in this damn country?"

"Because you're going to save the world from aliens and you have no idea where to start from without my help."

"You don't know if they are aliens."

"You have superpowers and a premonition that some people are coming but you don't know who? Please, its definitely aliens."

"If you say so then. When do you want to check what I can do."

"Today. After school. My equipment is ready. And we should check on Sophie on our way. Maybe even bring her along."

"Okay then. If you say so. I'm going to get something to eat. You coming?"

"Yeah sure."
