Under the cover of darkness, I wrapped my arms around Natalie outside the penitentiary's wall and launched into the sky, getting enough elevation to be out of the tower guards' line of sight. The coolness of the night formed welcomed goosebumps on my skin, invigorating my entire body, sticky and damp from a mixture of exertion and nerves. My head throbbed like I had spent last night drinking, and my lungs seemed unable to get enough oxygen from the air. I could feel my powers draining like the battery on an old phone.
I just hoped Hannah held off the rain until we got inside. I wouldn't want my hair ruined for my reunion with my ex.
My cape fluttered behind me as I hovered in the dark night sky with Natalie clinging tightly. The prison loomed below, a massive, foreboding structure surrounded by high, razor wire topped walls and armed guards.
"Are you ready?" I called out over the wind from the looming storm.
"Ready as I'll ever be." Natalie's voice strained with nerves. The absence of her usual quip told me she was truly nervous.
I chuckled, masking my own anxiety. "Well, that's not very reassuring. I was hoping for something a little more confident, like 'Bring it on, Stormy! I was born ready!' or 'I'm ready for whatever comes my way!' or even just 'Let's do this thing!' But I guess 'ready as I'll ever be' will have to do. Don't worry, we've got this. The Ladies in Leather are unstoppable!"
Okay, I didn't believe any of that at the moment, but I could feel the tenseness in Natalie's muscles relax. We didn't need any fumbles during our first step to our inaugural master plan. Seeing a murderous ex-husband was enough to make a girl pee her pants.
"Nice pep talk." Hannah buzzed in our ears.
I showcased my middle finger, but luckily, she didn't have a visual on us.
"Remember why you're here," Hannah continued, clearly wanting to give Natalie her own pep talk. "For Nell. She deserves justice."
And so did all our loved ones.
I began our descent towards the prison, narrowly avoiding the searchlights that swept across the sky. We caught a glimpse of the guard inside the tower, eyes already heavy as he seemed to wait for the minutes of his shift to tick by. Perfect. This would be easy.
I landed softly on the roof, setting Natalie down beside me. We looked at our watches. The time ticked to four minutes into our plan. We had a minute until we had to act.

I pulled the explosive from my fanny pack. Ahem, utility pouch. I laid on my belly, waiting for the distraction to lower myself from the roof. I glanced at my watch. 4:58... 4:59... 5:00. Thunder boomed through the sky and the looming storm opened up. Hannah's power was right on cue. On the other side of the roof, Natalie stomped on the shingles. Thunder rumbled. Lightning flashed. Another stomp.
And I held my breath, slowly lowering until I saw the guard distracted by the thumping above him. At 5 minutes and 15 seconds on my watch, I hovered in the air and stuck the explosive to the glass, and quickly snatched Natalie from the roof, flying us high above the tower.
The rain poured, taking out most of the visibility for the other tower watchguards and converting my sexy villainess look to nothing more but a drowned rat. God, what a way to make your ex jealous of all the things he missed over the past year. At 5:30, the sky lit up, thunder rumbled, lightning flashed, and off went the explosive, the boom swallowed by the weather.
And now, there was no time to waste. I had Natalie in my arms and I could already see her hand glowing from her power brewing. I flew her down to the balcony, and she exploded through the broken window, launching herself across the room to place a hand on the guard. Her hand caught his wrist, and in only a moment, his eyes fell heavy and he slumped to the floor, fast asleep.
"You earned your name of Telepathic Titan," I said, hovering just outside the window. "You are a god. Good job."
Natalie turned, giving me a smile that showed off her pearly white teeth showcased by her bright red lipstick. "Guard number one has entered dreamland. I hope he dreams about something naughty."
I placed my hand on the comm device, pushing the button. "Mission 1: complete. Exactly as expected."
Through the storm, directly below the tower, I could make out the image of Jasmine, using her telekinesis to bend the wire of the fence to make an entrance and escape route for us all. I flew Natalie to the ground, and soon, we were inside the fortress.
My ex-hubby was only a few corridors away, and I already felt like vomiting. I could do this. Sure, he deserved to be in prison for what he did, but in the same breath, so did the superheroes. They had killed my sister and many other people. Sometimes, life had consequences you couldn't avoid.
And despite the past, right now we needed Elijah to bring some justice. I had thought I would never have to see him again after what I had done. I knew I could take his anger, but could I take his hurt?
I was about to find out.
If only my magic little belt had enough room for the feel-better chocolate and emotion-numbing wine I wanted to pack.
But as I turned one corridor and jogged down another, I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. Here I was, a newly formed supervillain, trying to break my supervillain ex-husband out of the prison I had sent him to, with the help of four women I met less than a year ago and completely trusted, united with a common goal of seeking justice against the superheroes everyone loved.
If only the writers of my life could see me now. They'd probably cancel the show for being too over-the-top.
The silent hallways were only giving us false confidence. A trap lay ahead that we were marching right into, and all I could do was chuckle at the ridiculousness of it all.
