Journal prologue

“It has been said that a flutter of a butterfly’s wing could cause a Typhoon halfway across the world.”

We are the butterflies, the ones who can cause havoc and mayhem with one tiny flap of our wings. There are not, nor ever been, a lot of us. We used to attempt to lead average lives; we tried to fit in with the best of our abilities, but, no matter what, we would always be the black sheep; the odd ones out. Why couldn’t we just blend in? Well, for one, we attract butterflies. I don’t really have a thorough understanding on why this happens, maybe it is because they view us as family, not that we share any characteristics, but because we share the capability of creating devastation in less time that it takes to utter a word. Though we share this aptitude, we administer it through a completely different form. A butterfly disturbs the air through precise movements of its wings, and we, well, we do it through controlled and centered thoughts. Because we can’t exactly live with the other people, we live with each other.

Though we may not necessarily be related, we all share the same ability. When a child from the outside world, outside of our safe little haven, is born and is seen to attract the attention of butterflies, the parents of that child immediately disown that infant and abandon them at the entrance of our community. Inside the walls that confine us, we care for each other; we have all the necessities of life. We don’t even need to worry about death, because upon breathing our last breath we turn into a butterfly. I guess that is probably another reason why we have a tendency to always be surrounded by them; they used to be one of us. Because we don’t want little children responsible for the deaths of hundreds of others, once a child is either born or brought to our community, they are given a pendant which they must wear at all times. This piece of jewelry is designed to control our thoughts until we can do so ourselves. At the age of eight, we are deemed to be sufficiently mature enough to remove our pendant. Although we do not have to, most of us, me included, keep the necklace to control our emotions if we get too overwhelmed at any moment in our day to day lives.

Our lives have been quite peaceful, with no one really attempting to bother us. Well, that is until yesterday. A notification had been sent to us by the government of the world outside. It declared that we would be deported, in one week’s time, to a supposedly “safer” environment. From that moment, I knew that I had to leave, to escape. I knew the real meaning of the message. They want to control us, to observe us, to experiment on us so they can learn and abuse our powers our strengths. . This is unacceptable to me. I need to go, to leave, to see the outside world. To imagine my future if I were to be brought to this new place where they wanted me to go is something I will not consider. I have already planned my escape, me and William that is.
