Chapter 94: Friend From Decades Before

Chapter 94: Friend From Decades Before

Shiro: [Cross! Cross! Cross! Cr… oss!]

A singular word was repeated several times within the bedroom of Shiro Fuloreen’s house. Standing before her bed, Shiro swung a roll of cardboard like a bat while exclaiming the word “Cross”. Distracted from his reading, Xander looked up from his book while he laid on the bed to see his wife performing her odd activity. He was unsure why she had started to do this, as this was something she had only practiced that night. There was one more day of training left between Shiro and Devi before they would depart to their battle, yet even this night had its own odd style of training.

Xander: [Starting a baseball career after you retire, I presume?]

Stopping her swings, Shiro shut her eyes and turned to face the same direction as her husband.

Shiro: [Haha, very funny. I’m testing out my new signature move that I made for Tempest. There’s a ton that I created already, but this one is my strongest by far.]

Xander: [I see. You’ll be testing that with Grandmother Devi tomorrow then, right?]

Shiro: [Nope! I have something extra special planned for her!]

Curious, Xander raised one brow higher than the other.

Xander: [Oh? Do tell.]

Shiro: [I wanted to ask you, other than her duties, how much time has Devi spent outside?]

Xander: [Outside? As in being in the outside world?]

Shiro: [Essentially, yeah.]

A small laugh escaped Xander’s lips, smiling at his beautiful wife.

Xander: [I see. You really are a clever one, Shiro.]

Shiro: [I knew you’d figure it out in no time!]

As they gazed at each other with loving eyes, Xander patted the spot beside him in the bed. Shiro made her way over, sliding in and holding Xander tightly with her arms shortly after he placed his book down for the night and shut the nearby lamp off. Embracing her as well, Xander placed his arms around Shiro, caressing her hair as he did so.

Shiro: [Do you think she’ll like it?]

Xander: [She most likely won’t understand at first, but after that…]

Moving her head up from her husband’s chest, Shiro looked towards the eyes that matched hers in color.

Shiro: [After that?]

Looking back down at her, Xander smiled.

Xander: [She’ll have the best time of her life.]

With one final smile, the two gave each other a kiss on the lips and set themselves back down to sleep.

The final day of training for Shiro and Devi was now approaching.

Whilst Airi Fuloreen focused on seeing what the three under Shiro were now capable of, Devi had woken up early to prepare for the day. Stretching her body along the bright grass, she awaited Shiro’s arrival after being told that the goddess was getting ready to leave her house.

Stepping side to side, she practiced one of her many basic dances of battle. A movement that allowed for her to swiftly dodge attacks from an opponent along with providing fierce counters of her own. Though there was not a single foe before her, she quickly grabbed the hilt of her sword and sliced the air in front of her. She would then dodge, spinning past that same space and attacking it once more. A duck followed by the back of her heel and a cut that could easily slice open a neck.

There was not a single foe, as stated. However, it was clear what she had begun her day with. Among the many practices of martial arts, swordplay and the like was one common tool that could be used. Shadow boxing. The idea of imagining your foe before you and facing them. It was not as simple as believing that victory was in your hands from the beginning, as this was an opponent that existed within your mind alone. No, it was something that required far more work than just that. The true essence of shadow boxing was a match between you and the invisible foe. A battle in the truest sense. Winning or losing did not matter. What remained important in this field was the idea that you were clashing with this opponent. To learn and grow from this experience would mean that you must face them as you would any other.

To Devi Bloodfire, this was a morning warmup within her schedule for the past several decades. Waking up, washing her body, brushing her long blood red hair and fixing her clothes before putting them on. Then, once she was finished and had her breakfast, she would do exactly what she had done now. Shadow boxing. She would imagine a foe that could put up a great battle against her and fight them until the next event in her schedule arrived. Perhaps this could have been the reason that she was so skilled in battle. However, that was something that even she did not have the answer to.

On this day, Devi was much more fired up than ever. After Shiro’s incredible progress and Airi’s own advice, Devi had accepted the request that was given by the snow succubus. There was an air of mystery about it. She had no idea what was in store nor what would be required and thus it excited her. The expeditions she had ventured on in the past were the same. Those were the ones she enjoyed most of all.

Each second made her heartrate grow faster. An anxious feeling was rising up from her heart, but it only existed due to her excitement for when Shiro would arrive. In her own brain, she had compared it to that of a birthday party for a child. One that was excited to open their gifts but could not do so until the party transpired. A feeling that she had not understood before, as her birthdays were often more formal, but her children and the generation after had been much different. It was only now, longing for this special regimen that she had understood it.

Finally, the relief filled with pure ecstasy had arrived. Behind her was a presence she could not sense yet she knew it was approaching. Turning with a smile, Devi gazed at Shiro who gave the same look back.

Shiro: [Morning, Devi! You seem really happy today!]

Devi: [If I’m being quite honest, I am. I’ve been rather looking forward to what you would present me with. So? What shall we do? Will it require my blade? Perhaps it’ll be related to the arts?]

Shiro: [Actually, speaking of your sword, could you bring it back to my house? Xander will take care of it for the time being, but he’ll also give you what we need for the day.]

With a firm nod, Devi accepted her request.

Devi: [Of course! I shall do so immediately! Please wait for my return!]

Shiro: [Yep! We can’t start the day until you come back!]

Swiftly, Devi walked past Shiro with her head held high. Her excitement had started to break the chains that restrained those feelings, causing her face to light up more and more as she made her way back to the house. As she stepped onto the mat, she gently knocked on the door and was greeted by the grandson. Without a word, Devi unlatched the belt holding her sword and handed it over to Xander.

Devi: [Would you care for a trade, Xander?]

Xander: [Of course, Grandmother. I’ll be right back with your things.]

Devi: [Splendid.]

Taking the sword, Xander quickly left the front of the house and entered the living room nearby. As she waited, Devi looked at the outside of the house and its design, along with Shiro and the others behind her. It was oddly refreshing to her. Almost a week had passed and yet she spent not a single day within her castle. Somehow, despite not being at home, Devi felt much happier here. Perhaps it was due to family, perhaps it was due to how kind Shiro and Xander along with their children were, perhaps it was the new environment. None of it was certain, but Devi felt completely at peace. The end of her thought would arrive shortly as Xander reappeared, only to now confuse her with what he was holding.

In one hand was a cloak. It was nothing special, merely just that. A cloak that could be worn over the head to hide one’s face or protect them from the shade. The other was the truly peculiar item. She knew what it was. She recognised it in full. It was rare that she saw it used, but there were occasions over the past week that it had been. They were keys. Keys to the car that Shiro and Xander both owned and had driven in. Taking both items into her hands, Devi glued her confused eyes onto each at a time.

Devi: [Xander, I don’t understand. These are the items for today’s training?]

Xander: [They sure are.]

Closing the door slowly, Xander gave a kind smile to his grandmother before it was shut.

Xander: [Have a great day, Grandmother Devi.]

By herself again, Devi was unsure of what to do. She knew that what was now in her hands was what she required for the day’s regimen. However, it did not make a bit of sense to her. Why was a cloak needed or keys for that matter? There was not much to learn from just a cloak nor a car. Despite the new circumstance, Devi made her way back to Shiro, only for her turn to be interrupted by the very same woman who took the keys right out of her hand.

Shiro: [And with that, our day begins! Go ahead and put the cloak on Devi. We’ll drive over to someone special to get the final thing we need.]

Devi: [Shiro… I don’t understand…]

Shiro: [Don’t worry about it! All you have to do is put on the cloak and we can get started!]

Though Devi wavered in her confusion, Shiro’s gleeful energy could not be disrupted. It was as if nothing could stop her today.

The cloak’s purpose still remained unknown to Devi. Thus, it was only reasonable to expect a question regarding it.

Devi: [Shiro, why must I wear the cloak? I would like to know if that is alright.]

Shiro: [Huh? Oh, that’s simple really. I don’t want you getting spotted in public.]

Devi: [But if that is the case, would it not be better for you to wear it? Your image at this moment has been tampered with by an unknown third party! It would be best for you to put it on!]

Closing her eyes, Shiro released a small breath from her nose and smiled.

Shiro: [I guess that’s true. But at the same time, I feel like a former ruler of the world is held to a much higher standard than someone like me. Even if I’m a goddess, I’m not entirely sure what people think of me, especially after what you mentioned. When it comes to the legendary Braveheart herself though, I don’t want anyone bothering us because they saw such a notable woman in my car. Besides, you never know what people are like out there. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if you got hurt while being visible in public. Anyways, hop in! Let’s hurry up and start our day!]

Hesitating for a moment, Devi slowly made her way to the other side of the car and stepped in. After putting on the cloak, she buckled her seatbelt and turned slightly over to view Shiro.

Devi: [When our mission is over, I will see to it that you are compensated for the troubles I have caused.]

Shiro: [Great. Now there’s two people who have their own made up debts to me.]

With that, their training had begun. Shiro pulled out of her driveway and set her sights on the next destination.

The true purpose of this day would soon be known to the former ruler of the world.

△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼

A minka house.

An incredibly large one at that.

Devi had never visited such a house within the Babylon District before. She had never seen it. Despite this being the first time she had even gazed upon it, she had already known what was inside. It was obvious. Shiro sat beside her in the car that had now pulled up along the hill, thus there was only one logical conclusion. Interrupting that answer was the horn of the car which was pressed twice by the energetic goddess, smiling at the front shogi to the house.

The shogi quickly opened and there stood her answer. A tall, muscular kitsune with long orange hair and nine tails of the same color mixed with white. A white kimono with lines of blue along it followed by a red hakama that overlapped it and geta on bare feet. Behind this kitsune who was smoking from her kiseru were several others of different ages, builds and sizes.

Shouting from across them, Shiro gave her excited yet simple instructions.

Shiro: [Devi and I are in your care, Kō!]

Smoke leaving the kitsune’s puckered lips, a smug grin was given as she lifted her free hand towards her children.

Kōkatsu: [Yep. Girls! Ya know what to do!]

The Kōkatsu Family: [Right!]

Several children quickly made their way to the car, kindly escorting the two succubi out and welcoming them into the house.

Nearly ten minutes had passed since Devi’s face gained its surprised look. Within that time, her appearance remained the exact same way. Both with just her expression, but also her clothing and hair.

△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼

A young candidate for ruler was standing in an elegant castle that matched her. Her blood red hair was a drastic contrast to the white beautiful dress on her body. Though there was a contrast between the two, there was something truly extravagant to it. Perhaps it was due to how perfect the candidate had looked or perhaps the dress she had worn was crafted with such love that it was the piece with the title of “perfect”. Regardless of what it could have been, the two complimented each other and formed something that many would pay absurd amounts of money to paint.

Standing in front of a full sized mirror, she gazed at her own appearance. Her hair, her face, the veil atop her head and the dress below that. Everything was sublime. All except the expression on her face, riddled with anxiety and clammy to the touch.

Beside her were several maids that had prepared her for this day. Worried why she had this odd expression, they called out to her.

Maid: [Lady Devi?]

Devi: [... I can’t do it.]

Sitting herself down on the seat behind her, Devi placed the palms of her hands against her face as she admitted defeat. Rushing to her side, the same maid attempted to speak with her.

Maid: [Lady Devi! You must!]

Devi: [... He can’t see me like this. I look horrible.]

Maid: [Nonsense, Lady Devi! You’re as beautiful as ever! If he has loved you before, his affection will only grow once he sees you now!]

Devi: [... Nothing about me looks right. There’s too much going on with how I look and there’s too many things to stress about already.]

Taking a second to give a firm response, the maid spoke quietly to Devi.

Maid: [Lady Devi, I must ask you as you were not put up to this nor was this marriage arranged. Do you love this man?]

Moving her hands from her face, Devi gave a confident look of bravery back.

Devi: [Of course I do.]

Maid: [And you wish to marry him, correct?]

Devi: [Yes. That has been my dream since the day I fell in love.]

Maid: [Then I shall give you a choice. If you stand now and enter that room, we shall all support the two of you to the fullest. We will assist the both of you with everything that you need, along with the future ahead that may bring children of your own.]

Raising a finger, the maid continued.

Maid: [However, if you cannot stand and continue to sit there, I will inform him that the marriage is canceled and request that he return home, never to speak with you again. I will give you ten seconds to make your choice. One–]

Before the count could reach two, Devi quickly shot up and faced the maid. With a firm nod, Devi smiled.

Devi: [Thank you. I’m ready now. Please, take me to him.]

The maids within the room all smiled back to her and bowed while holding the hem of their dresses.

Maid: [Of course, Lady Devi. Right this way.]

This was the day Devi’s joy had bloomed into something much greater.

The day in which a young Devi had gotten married.

△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼

Looking at the mirror in front of her, the woman did not seem familiar. Long black hair no longer in a familiar style, a yellow shirt with frills along the top and bottom, black pants and some nice, shiny black shoes. Moving her hands along each piece, she gazed at herself up close. It was strange. Incredibly so. It was not her, yet she was happy. It did not remind her of what she had looked like, yet she believed she was just as beautiful as before. The only thing that remained was her light blue skin.

Standing behind her was a kitsune with short white hair dressed like a miko. Bowing her entire upper body to the woman, a question was presented.

Kagami: [Is your appearance to your liking, Miss Devi?]

Still stunned by what had occurred, along with the previous time within the day where this had all started, Devi remained bewildered.

Devi: [I’m… I’m not sure what to say…]

Kagami: [If you do not enjoy it, we can try and find other options that you may–]

Devi: [N-No! No! I didn’t mean that! I’m sorry! I suppose I’m surprised is all… It’s beautiful. I’m beautiful, but I was taken aback at first. The work you and the others have done is incredible, Kagami. Thank you very much.]

Rising from her bow, Kagami placed a hand over her heart as she smiled at the former ruler.

Kagami: [I am honored by your praise, Miss Devi. You are most welcome.]

???: [Sounds like we’re ready to go!]

Moving into view from Devi’s side, a new succubus she was unfamiliar with could be seen. Black hair just like her yet it was styled into a ponytail and a purple aster placed in it. A light blue overshirt that was unbuttoned placed over a t-shirt of white. Navy blue jeans and black and white running shoes. This woman should have been one Devi could not recognise, yet the face was incredibly familiar.

Shiro: [Thanks for all your help, Kaoru!]

Kaoru: [No problem, Miss Shiro! Come by anytime you need something like this!]

With the girl that looked like a mini Kōkatsu smiling back to this gleeful succubus, Devi watched as the crimson eyes of a goddess returned to her view.

Shiro: [Are you all set, Devi?]

Devi: [Y-Yes… You look beautiful, Shiro.]

Shiro: [Aww! Thanks! Kō’s family really put in a whole lot of work to make us look great. I guess we’ll just have to make it up to them by going all out!]

Devi: [R-Right! We shall do so… how exactly?]

Smiling with her teeth, Shiro placed a finger over her lips as she gave her answer.

Shiro: [That’s a secret for now! You’ll find out soon, don’t worry!]

As they two exited the minka house, they waved off to Kōkatsu and her family and thanked them for the help.

Returning to their car with their new looks, a brand new destination was in sight. One that Devi did not expect.

△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼

It was already starting to make less sense by the minute. The two succubi were no longer in their car and now stood in a series of markets. Several different shops were set up one by one, creating a massive line across from them. All sorts of things had been available for sale from food to clothing to many other items. Shiro had already started to view what was being sold from afar, while Devi stood beside her, motionless with her mouth open by an inch.

This was not training. The day should have been filled with training between the two of them. Instead, Devi was now standing in the middle of a large marketplace with an appearance that was not her own alongside Shiro who underwent the very same thing. None of this made sense. None of it fit into the idea she had for a regimen. Airi had told her to trust in Shiro’s plan, but Devi was now unsure if this was a correct idea to begin with. Was it the time to be doing something like this? A battle like no other would soon be underway, so why were the two of them spending the day shopping?

She could not understand. In the midst of this unknown darkness however, a shining ray of light that understood where she was positioned came bursting through.

Shiro: [Are you alright, Devi?]

Devi: [S-Shiro, I’m sorry if I sound rude saying this, but I do not understand the importance of–]

Shiro: [Don’t worry. I promise today will be the most important day of all for the two of us.]

Devi: [But we’re merely shopping, are we not? How could this–]

Shiro: [Devi.]

Silencing herself after seeing the kind face in front of her, Devi shut her eyes and sighed deeply.

Devi: [... Alright. I’ll play along for now.]

Shiro: [Great! There’s only one rule I have.]

Walking a few steps away, Shiro turned to look back at Devi as she continued.

Shiro: [You don’t need to force yourself to have fun. But if you’re enjoying your time today, don’t restrain how you’re feeling, okay?]

Devi then watched as Shiro raced forward, gazing at the nearby markets and deciding what to go to first. As Devi started to look around, she quickly noticed that Shiro had made her decision and was waving for her to come over. Making her way over, something became clear to Devi that did not feel right.

She was out in public, yet not a single person recognised her. Her long black hair, frilly yellow shirt and black pants with shoes that matched was a look that likely seemed so common, so normal, that they would not be able to recognise this woman as the legendary braveheart and former ruler of the world. It was likely the same for Shiro. Even if succubi were born with certain features, these features were still common amongst each other. Thus, the two blended in perfectly.

Arriving at the stand, Devi looked up to gaze at the sign above. “Candy Apples” was written along the plank of wood.

Shiro: [Let’s get some candy apples to start! It’s the perfect way to start a day like this!]

Devi: [Candy apples… That does not seem like something you should mix together. To begin with, candy is rather unhealthy for the body, so adding it onto apples which can help with–]

Shiro: [Try one! I bought us two so you can at least do that much!]

With the candy apple grasped in her hand, Devi was unsure of what to do. She did not understand why it was on a stick. She did not understand why candy and apples were mixed together. Most importantly, she did not understand why this would be “the perfect way to start a day like this”.

Looking at Shiro across from her, she witnessed the energetic goddess lick the side of the apple. A quick rise in her face showed just how much she enjoyed it.

Shiro: [Yep! That’s the perfect candy apple taste right there!]

Attempting to mimic her, Devi slowly moved her tongue over to the apple. Once it was placed firmly against it, the taste had finally entered her mouth. Sweet. Incredibly sweet. Even so, it was nice. A sweetness like she had never tasted before yet it was not too much. It reached an interesting middle ground within her mind that provided her with satisfaction.

Devi: [It’s like syrup…]

Shiro: [Exactly! It’ll take some time to eat, so why don’t we continue shopping?]

Devi: [O-Oh… Alright.]

Moving to the next stand, the two looked at several hats that were on sale. Several different logos and versions of hats were available, many of which Shiro placed on her head and asked Devi “How do I look?”. This often led to a full review of what Devi had thought about it, resulting in the hats being returned. After spending several minutes there, Shiro had ultimately given up on having fun with the hats and decided to move on.

Shiro: [Well, if the hats aren’t doing it, how about–]

Devi: [This one.]

Shiro: [Hm?]

Shiro turned back around at Devi’s call. In her hands was a sun hat with a blue ribbon around it. A genuine smile could be seen from the side of Devi’s face as she looked at the hat.

Devi: [Xander bought me one of these when he was young. I believe it was during my birthday.]

Shiro: [Did you wear it often?]

Devi: [Unfortunately, I did not. I was still focused on my duties at the time.]

Shiro: [I see. That’s too bad.]

The conversation grew somber and Shiro now desired to move on more than ever. However, Devi had suddenly glanced at her, before looking back down at the hat and then the cashier. Once her eyes met her final target, Devi moved over to the front of the stand.

Devi: [Excuse me. I’d like to buy this hat, please.]

Cashier: [Sure! That’ll be five gold coins!]

Devi: [Right. Here you are.]

Cashier: [Thank you very much! Enjoy your day!]

Devi: [To you as well.]

After placing down the five coins, Devi made her way to the confused Shiro and firmly placed the hat on the goddess’ head.

Shiro: [Devi…]

Devi: [Shall we continue?]

Noticing the joy on Devi’s face, Shiro’s own started to burst through again as she nodded in agreement.

Shiro: [Yeah! Let’s keep going!]

Stand after stand, the two continued to shop around. Though Devi had still not understood why this day was important, she kept Shiro’s rule in mind. She would not force herself to have fun. However, she would also not allow her mind to hide how she was feeling. If she enjoyed her time here, if she wished to smile or give a lighthearted laugh, she would hide nothing. It would be on full display for all to see, even if only one recognised her.

The two had stopped at a shirt stand, browsing the collection and picking out their favorite one to purchase. They had hid the result from each other and chose to only display it after the fact.

Shiro: [Look at mine! It says “Number One Demon Mom!”]

Devi: [I believe mine is quite nice as well. “All vacations, No work”. It is humorous because that is rather odd. You should normally focus on work and only occasionally a vacation, but this shirt–]

Shiro: [I understand what it means, Devi. Don’t worry.]

The next they had bought from was a stand with several masks and accessories for the face. As Shiro bought several masks, supposedly for her children to have fun with, her name was called by none other than the Braveheart herself.

Devi: [Shiro.]

Shiro: [Hm?]

What she then saw was Devi with a pair of glasses that had eyebrows along the top, a bulky nose and a mustache. Unable to control her laughter, a quick outburst came from Shiro’s mouth.

Shiro: [Pfffft–Hahahaha!]

Devi: [Excellent. These work perfectly. Excuse me! I’d like to purchase these!]

Countless stands received attention from the two. Food, clothing, and all sorts of items were now held in their hands. So many had been visited that the noon was slowly approaching the evening. Thus, Shiro wished to finish things off at one last stand. The only problem was choosing the right one.

Her answer arrived soon after, as they moved down the end of the line, only for Shiro to see–

Shiro: [Bracelets! Friendship bracelets!]

Rushing over to the stand, Shiro gave Devi very little time to understand what was going on. As Devi rushed over, she gazed upon an assortment of items to put on a bracelet.

Shiro: [Let’s make some, Devi! Come on!]

Devi: [O-Oh, well… Alright. I’m unsure of how to do this though…]

Shiro: [If you wanna learn the way me and Kō did it, all you need to do is put the name of your friend on there and put any of these extra bits beside it! I’ll start making yours while you figure it out! Ask any questions if you need help!]

Devi: [I see… I’ll try my best.]

Devi was not necessarily the creative type. In battle, perhaps she was. However, when it came to fields outside of that, her brain did not come up with many ideas to burst forth with her own colors and beauty. Which is why after several minutes of thinking, Devi created the most obvious result possible.

The two had now finished their bracelets and were ready to show each other. First was the black ponytail succubus, who displayed her bracelet to her friend.

Shiro: [See? I put your name in the middle and then red, blue and black beads after. It’s the same colors as you! What did you make?]

Devi: [Well, it was a rather simple result, but…]

Raising her wrist, Devi displayed a mauve bracelet that had the name “Tequi” in the middle.

Shiro understood why it was there, yet the unrequitedness of her own bracelet left a bittersweet taste in her mouth.

Shiro: [I see. You and Tequi have been friends for longer than I’ve been aroun–]

Suddenly, Devi raised the other wrist. A full white bracelet, with the name “Shiro” in the middle. Shiro was silent in response, but Devi spoke with a smile on her face.

Devi: [Though I should have only created one, I felt as though it would be cruel to not create another for my friend who has passed. Thus, I made two. One for my close friend, Tequi, and the second for my other, Shiro.]

Wiping a tear from her eye, Shiro gave a small chuckle and smiled back.

Shiro: [Now I’m gonna feel bad that I didn’t make one for her, and at that point, I’ll need to wear four for Sil as well.]

Once their bracelets had been paid for, the two moved on to the next part of the day.

The carnival.

△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼△▼△△▼△▼

Shiro: [There’s only one perfect way to follow up a marketplace binge and that’s the carnival!]

Looking at the sights around her, Devi was once again in a location she was unfamiliar with. Different types of rides and games were around her. Carts of delicious yet unhealthy looking food were on display. If the Devi of the past had seen this, she would likely have little to no interest. The Devi of today was different however. After her journey in the market, Devi was now intrigued by what was around. Her response to Shiro proving it, as she energetically exclaimed–

Devi: [Where shall we start?]

Shiro: [Where would you like to start?]

Devi: [The corn specimens!]

Pointing at a nearby cart, Shiro followed her finger and noticed the label of “Corn Dogs” across the top. Turning back to Devi with a single raised eyebrow, Shiro was confused by this decision.

Shiro: [The corn dogs? Really? I’m not opposed to it, but I assumed you’d want something more substantial to eat.]

Devi: [We shall have those corn dogs!]

Shiro: [You’re the boss. Aye aye, ma’am!]

Making their purchase, the two stood nearby the cart as they enjoyed their food. Giving her review, Devi continued to present an energetic shout as she consumed the corn dog.

Devi: [It is incredibly simple in taste!]

Shiro: [Yep. That’s how these usually are.]

Devi: [It is, however, still very enjoyable!]

Shiro: [Really? It’s not bad, but I guess I’ve grown used to stuff like this as a kid.]

They then moved onto the next activity. The first that caught Devi’s interest was a hammer with a round half sphere in front of it. Beyond both of those things was a tall scoreboard that stopped at the top with a bell. Picking up the hammer after paying their fee, Devi reeled her hands back, preparing to strike down at the round target.

Shiro: [Try not to use too much force on it.]

Devi: [Rest assured. I am known for how much control I have in battle.]

Slamming down on the target, the two watched as not only the bell was hit, but was broken off and came flying back down beside the scoreboard. Both surprised and confused, Devi stared at the top of the scoreboard while Shiro moved over to the angered manager.

Devi: [... But I held back.]

Shiro: [... I’m sorry for her recklessness. Here’s some cash to pay for the damages.]

Then it was a game with a water gun and several targets to hit. Though Devi was skilled with a sword, she had been trained to hone in on many other skills and weapons. After picking the gun up, she made quick work of each of the targets in record time. Pretending to blow steam off of the top, Devi chose her prize of a large stuffed dragon plush. She looked down at the dragon and then back up at Shiro shortly after holding it with both hands.

Devi: [We will need to put him in your car. It would be cruel to shove him in the trunk so he shall sit as a passenger in the back.]

Shiro: [Someone could steal him and anything else in there if you do that.]

Devi: [We will arrest them if they do so.]

Shiro: [We aren’t ourselves right now. We can’t arrest them.]

Devi: [Technically speaking, the two of us are–]

Shiro: [Do not say we’re undercover.]

Devi: [... Alright, but we still must put him in the back.]

Shiro: [Fine but it’s on you if he gets stolen.]

The game after was Whack-a-Mole. A game that Devi had no problem in conquering. Quick movements and precision was something she had practiced every day with her sword. Receiving another easy prize at the end, she turned to Shiro with another large plush, this time of a tiger.

Devi: [... He shall join his dragon friend.]

Shiro: [Please don’t fill my car with stuffed animals.]

Devi: [I will try not to.]

Their next stop was the first ride they had experienced so far. Teacups. There were two instances in which they went on the ride. One where Shiro showed Devi how it worked and Devi observed, while Shiro had a blast. The other was the moment in which Devi understood what to do and had a blast of her own, constantly spinning the wheel in the middle at top speeds. Shiro however required a brand new stop shortly after.

That next stop being the nearby restroom, where–

Devi: [I’m sorry…]

Shiro: [... MMMBLAAACH!… AHAK!]

Devi: [... I’m very sorry.]

After Shiro’s hurl-inducing experience, they headed towards their next one. A long, incredibly high rollercoaster for the two to enjoy. Shiro was quite fond of rollercoasters, but as expected, Devi was unfamiliar with the concept. As the two got on, Devi listened to the instructions given about keeping her hands on the pole that fastened her down. What then followed was an exhilarating experience she had never felt before. Her speed was likely much faster than this rollercoaster, yet somehow there was an immense dread followed by a fantastic thrill as the rollercoaster scaled up only to come rocketing down. She had enjoyed it to such a great effect that she requested to go on it four more times with Shiro, which Shiro gladly obliged.

Game after game, ride after ride, food cart after food cart, Devi had an incredible time at this unfamiliar place called the carnival. However, it was sadly coming to an end as the night drew close. While watching as it shut down for the day, Devi looked towards Shiro with energy still in her eyes.

Devi: [Is there anything else we shall do?]

Shiro: [I’m glad you asked!]

Raising three fingers on one hand, Shiro presented the final stop for the night.

Shiro: [There’s a really nice place I’d like to eat at and they’ll be holding a live fireworks show later in the night. In between those two things is something special though! Something that I specifically kept a secret from you and I won’t reveal until it happens!]

Devi: [Very well! Let us make our way there!]

The final stop was now in sight.

Shiro and Devi headed towards their next destination, an incredibly fancy restaurant.

After waiting in a long line of people, Shiro and Devi arrived at the reception desk of the restaurant. However, it was at this very moment Shiro had realized two fatal flaws in her plan. One, they had not booked any reservations ahead of time. This could have been done earlier in the week, but on top of not knowing whether Devi would accept her request or not, there was an additional problem that was also the second flaw in the plan. Two, they were not Devi Bloodfire or Shiro Fuloreen at this moment. In order to make a reservation, Shiro would have needed to use her own name along with Devi’s to do so. Both of which would cause an immediate uproar and attract unwanted attention to them. A well known family name would likely allow them to enter, but they still could not use their own names. Which is why when they were asked–

Receptionist: [Names?]

Shiro: [Umm… Well…]

Devi: [Prinzi. Prinzi Milliana. This is my sister, Gomona Milliana. Would it be possible for us to enter?]

Receptionist: [O-Oh! Yes, ma’am! Right this way! We’ll provide the two of you with dresses while the meals are prepared!]

The receptionist had been completely shocked by Devi’s words but it was not just him. Shiro herself was amazed at how quickly Devi provided a response along with one that would allow them entry. As they were seated only a few tables behind a window, now with beautiful dresses to match while their clothes were kept neatly in the back, Shiro looked to Devi and asked about the names.

Shiro: [That was really impressive, Devi! Where did you get the names from?]

Devi: [The Milliana’s are friends of the Bloodfire and Tensetsu families. They’re quite high up in status despite living lives similar to those lower than them. Now then, let’s see what we shall have.]

As they enjoyed their wonderful meals, the two spoke of tales from their past to each other. Shiro had given stories about how she grew up, stories from her father’s days as a gladiator and her tales from when she attended the godhood school. Whilst Devi gave tales of her previous grand adventures, speaking of the journeys she went on with Tequi and many others, what they encountered, what they fought, where they explored. It was a moment for the two to finally get to know each other in full.

At this moment, in this restaurant. No. Perhaps this whole day was the very embodiment of it. The birth of a true friendship between Shiro and Devi. Though they were separated by what was essentially two generations. Though they lived their lives completely different from one another. This was the moment where they had finally understood each other. It was such a simple day, yet this could be considered the moment that they had consumed each other.

A day like no other for Shiro. A day like no other for Devi. For both, it was a day that could almost be considered perfect. However, there was one final piece. One final nail in the coffin that would seal the deal. For Devi at least, is what Shiro had thought.

Enjoying a finely aged wine, Devi looked at Shiro and posed her question.

Devi: [I’m very curious to see what this secret will be, Shiro. This day has been rather fantastic already, but to think that there’s something that could make it even greater has me quite eager to learn what it is.]

Shiro: [Oh, don’t worry. You’ll find out any second now.]

Just then, the speaker started to buzz and a soft voice spoke to the silent room.

Speaker: [May I have your attention please! As it is now 9 PM, we will now begin the slow dance portion of the night. Please, take your partner’s hand and join them on the ballroom stage!]

Devi’s face started to light up with shock as she turned back to Shiro.

Devi: [Shiro…]

Smiling back to her, Shiro was prepared to give her a hand. Before she could, a young woman with long purple hair and a dress of the same color walked into view with her chest first and gave a hand to Devi.

Purple Haired Woman: [Excuse me. If you don’t mind, I’d like to have a dance but I don’t have a partner with me tonight… Would you mind joining me?]

Devi turned to look at Shiro, nervous to reject her friend of the opportunity. However, Shiro continued to smile and gave an affirming nod back to her. Looking back up at the woman, Devi showed a kind smile of her own and took her hand.

Devi: [Of course. You don’t mind if I take the lead, do you?]

Purple Haired Woman: [Not at all! I’m a little unfamiliar with this stuff, if I’m being honest.]

Devi moved to the center of the stage with the woman and recalled her past.

I remember a dance like this.

Me and Damon had several, yet there were only two where it was truly wonderful.

The day we met and the day we had gotten married.

Then, the music started to play.

Ah. This is it.

The exact song that had played on those two days.

This is wonderful.

This is perfect.

I feel as though I am back in Damon’s arms, lovingly dancing alongside him.

I wish I could stay like this forever.

Damon. From beyond our world and to yours.

Please join me in tonight’s dance as one final farewell.

With her eyes shut off from her surroundings, Devi continued her beautiful slow dance with her partner. Within her mind, the spirit of Damon Bloodfire joined her, holding her hands and dancing alongside her. Her love had returned to say goodbye. No longer would she be stuck in a castle, never mourning for her loss. No longer would she ignore her joy and focus on her duties. From today onward, she would live the same as she did when she was young. She would begin anew, molding her being into what she was once and starting again. Tears fell across her face as she continued to dance, but she paid them no mind. Now was only the time for her lover and herself to be reunited one last time.

It was not just her who was crying, as Shiro nearby struggled to keep a smile on her face as she watched. She was not Devi, therefore she could not feel the same pain of loss as she had. However, the elegant slow dance Devi was now performing made the pain ripple through her heart. She could not see Damon, yet she could imagine him being there by her side. It was heartbreaking to imagine Devi without her lover, but at the same time, the dance was beautiful to the fullest.

As she watched, a voice beside her spoke out.

???: [It’s beautiful, isn’t it?]

Shiro: [Yeah… Her dancing is something else…]

???: [... There are people who celebrate life with dancing, along with things like love. It might seem simple from the outside, but a dance can convey a thousand messages better than any words on a paper. It shows you what kind of person they are, how pure their soul is, the emotions they’re going through, their past and present. Everything. A woman as elegant as her, dancing with such kindness and somber behind each step. It makes you understand everything you need to know. There’s not a trace of evil behind that heart, and yet I’m sure yours would be infinitely more beautiful.]

Giving a small laugh between her crying, Shiro’s smile was able to return thanks to the kind hearted comment of the individual. All the while, she did not take her eyes off Devi.

Shiro: [Thanks, but I’m not sure that’s true. She’s a whole lot better than me as a person.]

???: [... I wouldn’t agree at all about that. She’s good. I can see that now. But you’re much better. There’s a pureness like no other in your heart, like that of a mother holding her child. At all times, it seems like you’d be able to display this kindness for others no matter their circumstance.]

Shiro: [I suppose I do act like that sometimes. In some ways, I kinda wish I got to dance with her. Maybe I’d understand even more about her, and the same from her to me.]

The conversation between them fell silent for a minute as they watched the dance. Once that minute was over…

???: [... Tomorrow is a big day. It’s not something many can muster up the courage or even risk their life for. But the two of you are making a brave decision and that’s something I have a great deal of respect for. Not to mention that I already hold an immense level of respect for you already. Don’t get careless when you run in there, alright? Your survival is of the utmost importance to us. If you sense anything dangerous or you feel like you can’t continue, fall back. Don’t get yourself killed, please. You’re all we have left.]

Shiro’s eyes widened to the fullest as she heard those words. She was not only disguised and had a different name within this place, but her plan was told to no one but those that were within the hospital and her family. Before she could even turn, the person beside her stood up. Their figure was still out of her line of sight.

???: [We’re counting on you, Lady Shiro.]

While the song came to a slow end, Shiro turned to her right to see no one. She could hear them clear as day. They were directly beside her. Yet there was now an empty seat behind her own. Additionally, the purple aster in Shiro's hair was suddenly missing.

Across the room, Devi opened her eyes and wiped the tears off. She bowed to the purple haired woman in front of her.

Devi: [Thank you very much for the dance.]

Purple Haired Woman: [It was my pleasure! Thank you very much as well!]

Devi moved back to the table while the other woman moved into the flock of people behind her. As Devi returned, she was met with Shiro who was sporadically looking around the room.

Devi: [Shiro? Are you alright?]

Shiro: [Devi! Was there someone sitting behind me before?!]

Devi: [Behind you? I didn’t pay attention, so unfortunately, I’m not sure.]

Shiro: [Surely they came here with someone… Ah! That woman! Was someone with her?!]

Devi: [I didn’t ask, but she said she didn't have a partner earlier. Is something wrong, Shiro?]

Shiro: [Damn it! I can’t find her either anymore! There’s too many people!]

Concerned over Shiro’s state, Devi quickly rushed to her side and rubbed her back.

Devi: [Shiro!]

Shiro had then taken a single hand and slapped herself with it, causing Devi to become even more concerned.

Shiro: [... I’m sorry, Devi. I’m ruining tonight by doing this.]

Devi: [Nonsense. If there is something wrong, I would like to know immediately.]

Shiro: [It’s fine. If something bad was gonna happen, it would have already happened. I can tell they were being honest.]

Looking back to Devi, Shiro’s smile returned.

Shiro: [Let’s enjoy the night. We still have dessert after all.]

Nodding, Devi's smile mirrored her.

Devi: [Understood. Let us enjoy our time here!]

At that moment, Shiro and Devi sat down at their table.

At that moment, two others exited the building.

Sitting at a table with countless other notable figures, a candidate to become the ruler of the world sat amongst them. With perfect posture and a monotone voice, she spoke to others without a problem and kept a perfectly formal appearance about her.

She was as royal as royalty could get. Someone who followed the rules they were given and provided the perfect image of herself for others to see.

For many, this was not a problem.

For one individual, however, it was immensely so.

Someone who viewed her as a beautiful woman. Someone who admired her bravery and strength. Someone who believed that an incredible being like no other was inside of her. The only thing that held it all back was one small flaw, which he pointed out to her.

???: [Come on, what’s with all the formality?]

Looking up at the man, the woman gazed upon a smiling figure with spiky dark blue hair and gray eyes.

???: [Don’t you ever want to break free from it?]

A response was given in a similar way to how she spoke normally.

Devi: [I have no need to do so.]

???: [Sheesh. You’re a tough nut to crack. Let’s start with names.]

Placing a hand on his chest, the man introduced himself.

Damon: [The name’s Damon. Damon Exhiliry. And you are?]

The hand was then presented to her, leading to a handshake.

Devi: [Devi. Devi Bloodfire.]

Thus began the conversation of many between Damon and Devi.

The chats of which would eventually break Devi free from her chains before he passed.

Whilst her chains were slowly broken, a growing pain lingered in her heart on the nights in which she could not speak with him, and a calm relief would soothe it once she could.

As everyone from within the restaurant stood outside to watch the fireworks, Shiro and Devi joined them in a space of their own. Watching as each pop in the night sky occurred, they spoke to each other.

Devi: [Shiro?]

Shiro: [Yeah?]

Devi: [Thank you for today. I mean it.]

Shiro: [No problem. I wanted you to experience the world a bit more before we head into tomorrow. I have faith in us, but you never know what might happen, right? So you might as well make the most of it while you can.]

Devi: [... Today helped greatly with our training.]

Shiro: [You really think so? I was nervous that you wouldn’t like it.]

Devi: [I loved it. I was finally able to accept myself again, as well as what you mentioned, experiencing the world and such. On top of those two things, I spent that time with you. Someone I can most certainly call a friend.]

Shiro: [Same to you, Devi. Let’s kick some ass tomorrow!]

Devi: [Indeed. Let us kick some ass.]

As they gave a quick smiling glance at each other, they looked back to the stars and fireworks in front of them.

Devi: [Despite this being your trip, I decided to play my own part in this.]

Shiro: [Oh? How so?]

Devi: [Any second now. I paid a fair price to have the largest firework among them all.]

Just then, a firework was shot into the sky with a long delay before the explosion. Finally reaching its limit, the firework popped in the night sky… forming a bow-like shape in mauve colors.

Both Devi and Shiro smiled with their mouths open at the light.

With Shiro’s right fist and Devi’s left, they placed them side by side while raising them up towards the bow.

This was their final farewell to their close friend, Tequi Tensetsu.
