The three of us began moving to the front of the caravan to see what the issue was all about. Once we arrived, we noticed a couple of men in uniform standing on the road below the hill that we were standing on.
“Who the hell are they? Are they bandits or something?” Darwin asked.
“They’re confederate guerilla fighters.” Liam simply told.
We looked at Liam with a baffled look. Seemingly not believing what he has said.
“The war ended a few weeks ago! What do you mean the confederates are still here?” Darwin asked with a concerned face.
“Truth to be told, I also don’t know.” Liam told.
“But why are they blocking the road? What do you think they want from us?” Darwin asked again.
“Whatever it is, it seems like they’re trouble. Tell everyone to be prepared for the worst, me and Daniel here will go discuss with them.” Liam told.
Darwin nodded in agreement. Liam then looks at me and nods for confirmation, I look back at him and nod back. Liam and I made our way to the guerrillas who were blocking our path and confronted them.
“Hold” One of the guerrillas who was one
a horse stopped us.
Liam got off his horse and walks towards them, as he got closer, one of them points his rifle and points at him. Liam, seeing this, raises his hand and stops moving.
“Easy there partner, I’m just trying to negotiate here.” Liam calmly said.
“This is a restricted area of the confederate. I suggest that you leave this area at once!” The man told us.
I looked at him with an odd face and soon got off my horse and went up to him.
“Hold on there, the confederacy has surrendered a few weeks ago. What do you mean this is confederate territory?” I asked him.
As I said that, he suddenly shot the ground near me and I stopped midway. Liam seeing this drew his rifle and pointed at one of the guerillas. I signalled to Liam to lower his gun and he obliged.
“There is no such word like surrender in the confederacy.” The man told us.
We noticed how stubborn they were becoming and Liam tried to De-escalate the situation.
“Look partner, we don’t want any trouble, we just want to pass through this area in one piece. That’s all that we want.” Liam said in a calm tone.
The two guerrillas looked at each other for a bit before nodding to each other. They looked back at us with a serious look.
“Alright then, you may pass, but only with one condition.” He told us.
We both breathed a sigh of relief when we heard that, we felt like this conflict has finally died down. But suddenly we heard something that made us sick to the bone.
“Blacks are not allowed to enter.” The man told.

We were so shocked when we heard those words came out of his mouth that we froze there, not knowing what to say. The thought of his ignorance made my blood boil. Without a second thought, I pulled my hand gun out of my holster and shot the man in the head. The other guerrilla saw what I had done and quickly drew his rifle. There, Liam quickly shot the other guerrilla off his horse.
“Daniel what the fuck is wrong with you?!” Liam screamed at me.
I was so angered by the person that I didn’t think twice, I look around and saw the bodies of the two men on the floor, dead. Everything felt fuzzy until I saw Liam began screaming at me. I noticed that bullets were beginning to rain down upon us and our horses were startled and ran away. During the chaos, Liam quickly grabbed my arm and rushed us out of the situation.
“Fuck, we’ll discuss this later, we have to get back on the hill and tell everyone to fight.” Liam said as we climbed the hill.
We managed to avoid the hail of bullets and got on top of the hill and regrouped with the rest of the group.
“What the hell happened? I was with the others until I heard gunshots from the front of the caravan.” Jerome asked.
Liam and I were practically so out of breath that we couldn’t explain what’s going on.
“There’s no time to explain, we have to fortify this hill before the guerrillas get here!” Liam told them.
Darwin and Jerome nodded and began calling upon the other men from the caravan to pick up arms and fortify their position. They all began positioning themselves on the hill, ready to defend themselves from the oncoming threat. The women and children were positioned in the middle of the fort to make sure that they’re safe.
“Lawrence, I hope you’re one hell of a sharp shooter, you defend this point and make sure they’ll never get through!” Liam told me.
I nodded slightly before picking up a rifle and held the front of the line with several other men. They were a bit scared but I decided to motivate them.
“Rain hell on them men!” I screamed at them.
They all nodded and aimed their weapons below the hill. As the enemies began approaching, I screamed at my man with all my heart.
“FIRE!” I screamed as loud as I can.
They all began firing their rifles and the enemies below the hill fell one by one. I used my rifle to pick off any survivors of the first wave. I managed to pick off several survivors before they fired their second waves of bullets upon the enemy.
“Keep firing men, kill as many as you can!” I screamed.
Meanwhile, Liam and Jerome were together defending the sidelines as cavalry tried to penetrate the walls of the fort around the caravan. They managed to defend the sidelines due to Liam’s sharp shooting abilities as he shot each horse rider off their horses.
“Is this all what they got?” Liam smugly said to Jerome.
“Taking down each rider is a daily routine for you huh?” Jerome jokingly said.
Darwin on the other hand was defending the back of the caravan with several others. They were seeing less enemies but they were struggling to fend them off. Darwin shot at a few riders and suddenly noticed one of the riders he just shot burst into flames. That’s where Darwin’s nightmare became a reality. He screamed at the top of his lungs.
“They have molotovs!” Darwin screamed at everyone.
We heard Darwin’s scream about the molotov and our heart dropped. They were trying to destroy our caravan from the inside, where the women and children were staying. We knew we had to keep holding the guerrillas back as much as possible.
“Defend our caravan at all costs!” Liam screamed.
We fought hard and bullets flew in the air above us. Some of our men were shot and injured during fighting. We were losing man power by each second of the fight. As we fought, I noticed that the enemies were getting closer and closer to our defence and it began to worry us. One of the guerrillas managed to throw a Molotov at our defence and one of our men dropped and rolled to put the flames out.
Liam’s face faded in obscurity seeing his men dwindling.
“We’re not going to make it, are we?” Liam muttered slightly.
Jerome saw his demotivated face and began hitting him on the back.
“Get yourself together man, we’re still in the fight!” Jerome encouraged him.
Liam's face brightened slightly and felt a bit encouraged by Jerome’s positivity. They picked up their weapons and began firing again. Although a bit motivated, the lack of manpower was obvious. I looked at the men as they kept falling after being shot by the enemy. I sqwthe enemies were climbing the hill relentlessly and I tried to pick them off but there were too many of them. As I felt all hope was lost, I suddenly noticed a few women from the caravan came out and picked up arms.
“Tell us what to do Mister.” One of the girls said.
I smiled slightly seeing their determined faces and felt a bit motivated seeing them. I motioned to them to line up and aim at the enemies below. As soon as they all got ready, we unleashed hell again upon the enemy as I picked them off one by one. Some of the girls from the caravan came out and began assisting the wounded. The children on the other hand began delivering boxes of ammo together with all their strength.
I smiled slightly seeing the entire community were helping each others to defend their beloved ones. After a few hours of fighting, we noticed that the enemy began retreating from the battle. While they were running, I decided to use my skills to pick off anyone that was in my sight. Liam came over and pet my back, telling me that it’s over.
“That’s enough, we’ve driven them out.” Liam told me.
The people of the caravan cheered as we’ve managed to fend off the guerrillas. We celebrate for a bit before Liam calms us down.
“That’s enough celebrating, we have to get out of this area at once before they come back with reinforcements. I have a feeling they will not take this defeat easily.” Liam told us.
As the battlefield cleared, we saw countless Guerrilla fighters' bodies lying down on the floor around our fort. There, the woman from before came towards us with a slight sad expression on her face.
“We’ve lost 3 of our men in the battle.” The woman told.
We all stood there with a saddened expression. Liam took off his hat to honor the fallen men, we quickly took off ours to honor them. We quickly buried the bodies before moving out in an alternate route before sunset.
