Chapter 1

Kane woke up later than usual, he was at a friend’s house party all night drinking, something normal for a college guy.

Being in a hurry for his first course at the college and with a splitting headache, accidents tend to happen. Not having a clear head made him see the boy on the crossing too late, steering the wheel to save the kid and driving right into a truck on the oncoming traffic.

It happened too fast, the world became white, the body wasn’t there anymore, nothing was, only white.

“So this is what happens after you die huh. I hope everyone else is safe.”

The white ground split and formed a huge dark hole with no end to it, Kane began falling into it but not for long.

He heard a loud sound like an explosion then colors started appearing again, sounds could be heard not so far from him, he was sitting on the ground, his back leaning on a tree, in front of him were people dressed in medieval clothes minding their own business.

“Is this afterlife?” he mumbled.

Kane’s throat was dry, a great feeling of thirst got to him, he got on his feet, slowly, his body not responding like it used to, the only good thing was that in the middle of the road was a fountain where he drank and drank until the thirst was gone.

Having calmed a bit, he saw his reflection in the water, the face was of a stranger not his, the clothes were also not something he ever wore, he was clothed in a light brown shirt and brown trousers.

“What is going on.”, Kane began hyperventilating and got out of breath, he wanted help, he wanted back home.

Out of desperation Kane asked people where they are and what is this place, none stopped to help him, to guide him, they looked at him with concern and pity, like he was a mad man.

Looking carefully at his surroundings, he found a wooden sign above a door, with a sack and food symbol on it, most probably a shop he thought.

Kane made his way into the shop, inside of it there were numerous fresh or preserved food and random items like backpacks or lamps, candles and items he never even knew that they were for.

“A new face, what can I help you with, sir?”, asked the old man standing at his desk in the back of the room, a forced smile plastered on his face.

“I am Kane, I’m new to this town, I have some questions to ask if you don’t mind.”

“Well there’s not much business at this hour anyway, i can answer some questions for you.”

“Where are we?”, asked Kane, hoping for this mystery to be over already.

“What do you mean where are we? You come to a city without even knowing its name, how strange. Where are you from, boy?”, the shopekeep got very curious about Kane.

“I’m from, uh, from…”.

He couldn’t remember where he was from, he tried to remember but couldn't, he could remember only vague things, like his name, his body appearance , the last day when he got killed in a car crash.

“I don’t remember where I'm from!”, cried out Kane.

“Easy boy, calm down. Can you show me your identification card?”, asked the old man.

“I…, I don’t have one.”

“You don’t have one, how strange! Is there no one with you boy, any family or friends to help you?”, said the shopekeep being in deep thought for a moment.

“No, I’m alone.”, said Kane, his eyes almost wet from the realization.

“I’ll tell you this boy, only criminals don’t have an identification card, but you are in luck, I can help you with getting one, free of charge, you just have to help me with some chores later. Come with me.”. The old man got his keys and closed the shop then began walking, the old man explaining that they were going to the place where they give you an identification card.

The town or city he was in was huge, they walked for almost two hours on the cobblestone roads, the houses being higher and better decorated the more they walked.

The place got strange pretty quick. Kane saw people with swords and shields, strange creatures he had never seen before pulling carts or walking beside people like pets, people doing shows on the street for money by spewing water or fire from their fingertips.

“Is that magic?!”, shouted Kane, his eyes wide open.

“Be quiet boy, have you never seen magic until now?”

“Never!”

“That is very strange of you, just be quiet until we get to the place please.”, said the old man with a frown on his face.

Kane was in no place to demand more from the old man who was already helping him so he just walked quietly admiring the city.

When they finally arrived, Kane was panting, he was not in shape for long walks. The building they were supposed to get the identification card was four story high and was very opulent, the inside was no less opulent, with marble floor and candelabras for lighting.

“Stay here boy, i have to speak with a friend here to help us, your situation is a little strange.”

Kane nodded, the old man went his way into a room and came back with someone not long after.

A man in a black elegant suit came to him and asked him his name.

“I’m Kane, sir.”

“Do you have any family name Kane?”

“I don’t remember sir!”

“Don’t worry, only nobles or important people have family names. I needed your name for the card, do you remember your age?”, said the elegant man.

“Uh, I think I’m 22 sir.”

“Good! Let’s go to my office to finish the procedure.”

The suited man drafted a contract and then put it in front of me.

“Here, do you know how to read?”

“Sur..”, Kane stopped mid sentence, the words on the paper made no sense, it was not english. He presumed that it would be English words, because everyone spoke it. “I don’t know how to read sir.”

“Well, don’t worry, not many do. You have to sign here, then cut your finger tip to draw a little blood then put it on the paper for the contract to be valid. After that I’ll prepare your identification card and you’ll be on your way.”, said the suited man while pointing to the place he was supposed to sign.

After Kane did as told, the shopkeeper and the suited man left the room with the contract carefully tucked under his arm.

When the door opened again, the suited man was no more; instead, 4 people clad in armour barged in. They took hold of him and cuffed him like a criminal.

“Boss got another one!”, laughed one of the armored men.

“A big catch, he seems healthy and young.”, said one of them while looking at Kane with a wide smile.

“Let me go! Help! What are you doing?!”, pleaded Kane.

“You are a slave from now on, slaves should behave!”, barked one of the men while punching Kane in the face.

They dragged him down to a cell-like room, where he stayed for a few hours crying and shouting pleas for help, until someone came inside the room and pressed their hands against his forehead. A warm feeling spread through his body.

The man took his hand off Kane then sighed disappointed.

“His soul is of a low tier, TRASH!”.

A foot planted its sole on the forehead of Kane, launching him into the wall.

“Argh, why are you doing this to me?!”, shouted Kane.

“You were tricked into signing a contract to be a slave, boy. From now on you'll stay with the other slaves until someone buys you. Someone can use you for manual labor, probably in a mine or something HEHEHE. I wonder how stupid you need to be to sign a blood contract into becoming a slave.”

Kane got transferred to another room, his handcuffs removed, he got food and water delivered by maids who refused to talk to him, they didn’t even look at him.

For seven days since he got to this horrible place nothing really happened, he stayed silently in his room, trying to figure out how to escape, and trying to remember who he was. He didn’t have anything to do anyways. Until a loud explosion was heard outside the building. An earthquake shook the whole room.

A cacophony of shouts could be heard from outside his room, blood made its way under his room door. The walls began to crack. Another explosion, then the ceiling gave away and fell onto him.
