Maria does not want to get married and her father William fears that this will lead to her impoverishment in the future. To change her mind, he enlists the help of his mother who is well known for her excellent matchmaking skills. His mother, however, has a secret that threatens to ruin not only the marriage prospects of Maria, but the entire family.
