Synopsis

In a nutshell: Yak Laughter is about the non-magic mom of a young wizard—and much, much more. It's a vivid, wacky, rollercoaster, sometimes grim and brutal, sometimes comedically absurd, often philosophical, always deeply human. Imagine if Harry Potter had been written at an adult level, then toss that in a blender with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I'm telling you, it's best if you don't know what you're getting yourself into! Just dive into Chapter One! If you really want to read a synopsis first, here it be; this should give you a fairly decent idea of what you can expect without spoiling too many surprises.  SYNOPSIS: Ezmeralda Totkins doesn't believe in magic—not until the day her seven-year-old son, Wilburn, learns to fly, nearly killing himself in the process, and unwittingly provoking the wrath of a swarm of giant psychic hornets, who descend upon Ez's cottage like a crusading army, hell-bent on slaughtering the boy. In a few short hours, both the cottage and Ez's understanding of reality are demolished. Luckily, Gramma Fark, Ez’s not-mother-in-law, arrives for dinner in time to save her grandson and her not-daughter-in-law’s lives. In so doing, Gramma exposes herself as a witch. Still more shocking is the revelation that Jack—Ez’s late lover, the father Wilburn never met—was a wizard, and that his death had not occurred the way Ez had believed for seven years. Jack had been a smuggler of enchanted contraband for a transnational crime syndicate. Gramma suspects other gang-members of killing him, though the precise circumstances of his murder remain a mystery. Despite Ez’s craving to uncover the truth about Jack’s murder, the more pressing mystery to solve is that of Wilburn’s psychic connection to the magic hornet hive. Gramma, whose own psychic skills are meager, cannot help in this regard, so she reluctantly enlists the aid of Master Iddolorious “Iddo” Bungflower, a pompous academic who happens to be a yak as well as the most powerful magician in the world—but also, according to Gramma, anyway—insane. Yak Laughter applies lit-fic sensibilities to the fantasy genre by juxtaposing intimate social dynamics with outlandish magical escapades, exploring the deepest questions of metaphysics from the perspective of an ordinary woman, whose love for her son forces her to confront paranormal dangers without any special abilities of her own. Heavy on both comedy and action, Yak Laughter fuses the wonder and morality of the Harry Potter series with the existential absurdity of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy—plus a dash of Pynchonian psychedelia.   R-rated violence, PG-13 profanity, PG sexuality. Although Wilburn, one of the lead characters, is a seven-year-old child, Yak Laughter is not intended for young audiences.  Sub-chapters are posted individually, then compiled after a full chapter has been released.
