Synopsis
This was originally written for a contest with the theme of "After the end" but I ended up liking it quite a lot, so I'm posting it here!
Rico dedicated the majority of his life to mastering his country’s national sport, believing it was his only way out of crippling poverty. His family pressured him constantly: “Keep practicing.” “Save your family from this horrible life.” The only problem was, they never treated him like he was a part of the family, never more than a way to make money. Growing up, his family resented him, seen as just another mouth to feed. Starved for their approval, Rico immersed himself in the game, while working labor intensive jobs. He hands over his meager pay simply to have a place to rest his head.
For many years, his life remained unchanged—until he met Tiana, a woman whose beauty and kindness captivated him. Tiana showed Rico how his family had used him and inspired him to seek a better life, not just for himself, but for both of them. Living with Tiana brought Rico immense joy, but also a deep sadness as he felt unable to provide the life she deserved.
After nearly killing himself with relentless work and practice, Rico’s chance to escape the slums and start a new family finally arrived. One last game stood between him and his dreams becoming reality.
However, reality can be cruel and unfair. When the final whistle blew, Rico’s team was defeated. With his future slipping through his fingers, Rico falls into a deep depression, overwhelmed by panic and sadness, unable to face the woman he loves. In his darkest hour, Tiana comes to him, reminding Rico that success isn’t just about winning or money. In the end, love proves to be far more valuable.
