Synopsis
Watch as a pre-industrial society attempts to speed-run a space program as the clock counts down for their would-be friends!
Centuries ago, three species met upon the high seas of their world. In the way of people everywhere, the wonder of meeting minds different from ones own eventually faded, and inevitable conflict escalated to wars of conquest, plunder and reprisal. Over time, a new concept of personhood that transcended species emerged as enemies faced a greater foe in the implacable violence of their world itself. Catalyzed by this idea, the chaos of history forged the three species into new composite civilizations, a union they call the Teal. Centuries later, philosophers would put this concept into words : the Covenant of Rescue.
As the nations of this world begin to pass from the Age of Sail into the Age of Radio, a fleet of alien ships arrives from deep space. After taking on fuel from the gas giant, the fleet begins to split up, departing to different destinations in deep space in smaller groups. However, a massive solar storm cripples the final group of starships, leaving them trapped in slowly decaying orbits around the gas giant.
The nations of the Teal now face their greatest challenge. How universal is the Covenant that unites them? How much is one obligated to sacrifice to effect rescue? Will the mighty respect the aid of the weak? Is there room within the Covenant for a mysterious forth people? Can a people of sails and swords slip the bonds of their world quickly enough for any of these questions to matter?
